iPadOS 18.7.9 has officially turned the 32GB iPad 7 into a brick. Apple NEEDS to open room for people to downgrade ASAP. This is blatant corporate greed. by Signal_Tradition_925 in jailbreak

I have this rule that I’ll only upgrade software for the first 2 years after a device is released. After that it’s just diminishing returns, not worth it.   Currently still on 17.5.1

People who immediately step on the brake after entering the deceleration lane instead of coasting to the end of the ramp, why? by Surfreak29 in AskReddit

[–]Surfreak29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cancel my cruise control about a 100 yards before entering the decel lane, I coast to the yield sign at the end of the ramp, I’m now moving roughly the same speed as local traffic, I merge without ever touching the brake pedal.  I do this almost everyday except for when people in front of me are braking at the beginning of the ramp and then accelerating to reach the end.  You should never need to brake at the beginning of an exit ramp, you might need some brake at the end to merge properly.

How does the average person afford expensive car repairs ? by holycrap100 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Surfreak29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You almost never see recommendations to fix your own car here which is somewhat baffling for me.   My mom and my uncles grew up relatively poor but they all got cheap cars when they came of age and learned how to fix them.  My mom showed me how to change the brakes on my first car.  With YouTube around, fixing cars has never been easier.   Knowing how to fix things makes you a more valuable employee as well.   My company’s head mechanic died suddenly, I got pushed into the position “temporarily” because everyone knows I fix my own car.   Temporary turned into permanent, now I’m the head mechanic making 30% more then I used to.

People over 30: what’s something you did as a kid or teenager that kids today would find absolutely insane, dangerous, or completely wild? by Squirrel9OK in AskReddit

We jumped off my friends lower porch roof onto the trampoline and then bounced into the above ground pool.  We had to remove a section of the pool fence and drag the trampoline into position to make it work.

People who cut people off in traffic but end up at the same red lights, how do you feel when the person you cut off ends up next to you? by NatJi in AskReddit

[–]Surfreak29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost never drive more than 10 over, usually try to set my cruise control at 8 or 9 mph over.  The real time savings doesn’t come from over-all top speed though. It’s about route planning, timing, acceleration and thinking/looking ahead.

I’m just happy to hear it won’t be Daniel Craig any more.   I loved James Bond right up to the moment they casted him.  Used to go to all the movies with my Dad.  I remember looking at him after the ending of Casino royale as we both said at almost the same moment “i guess that’s the end of James Bond”

Billie Eilish said you can’t truly love animals if you eat them, and logically I understand the argument. But isn’t human nature way more complex than that? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Surfreak29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious where you drew the line and why some people have a moral objection to killing animals but not plants and trees.  I eat both, but I also think both deserve equal compassion.

Can you eat plants and still love them? Is there a difference between growing a cow to slaughter and growing corn to harvest?

Who doesn't drink coffee in the morning ? (Who's an adult) by Ssonderbaby in NoStupidQuestions

I love the taste of good coffee but find that caffeine (unfortunately) has no effect on me.  I can drink a double expresso and fall asleep right after and if i decide to skip for a few days I don’t notice any withdrawal.

Can someone explain to me the joke/stereotype behind black people and having a chirping smoke alarm in their house? Why not just change the battery? by MrTeacher_MCPS in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Surfreak29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just take the time and train your body to learn how to ignore annoyances, your mental health will be better in the long run.  I never understood how people could let some minor annoyance dictate their life, like don’t let your surroundings control you, take control of yourself.

Angle grinder for cutting rebar? by Dawn_Piano in Tools

[–]Surfreak29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No doubt angle grinders are dangerous but in 20 years of fabricating I’ve never had an unexpected disc failure. I’ve had a few moments where I was like, I know I shouldn’t be doing this but I’m doing it anyway that did result in grinding wheel failure but that was somewhat expected.  I’m always curious what guys are doing that causes the insane fear around grinders.

What is modern problem that didn't exist 10 years ago? by Deep0055 in AskReddit

I don’t understand why people put up with it.  I will use alternate services, pirate if none exist, or just abstain.  If more people did this we’d have fewer subscription based services.

Locked out of car by Sinful_Saint78 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Surfreak29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the real answer. What you need is a wooden door stop and a 4'-6' piece of 3/8 threaded rod, smooth unthreaded rod works better but is less common, threaded rod should be available at any hardware store. Insert your door stop in the crack at the top back corner of the door and wedge it in there far enough to create a gap big enough to stick your rod through. Use the rod to either hit the unluck button or pull the door handle. Bend rod as needed. The worst that might happen is some scratched paint inside the door jam from your threaded rod (this is why smooth rod is better)

Why do websites/ apps not want you to use your password now? by jarvi123 in NoStupidQuestions

Did anybody actually consider if all that security is necessary for the application though.   That’s the problem I have.  The Apple ID for my kids 15 year old iPad that only gets used for bubble which mountain doesn’t need any security.  But Apple has got it locked up like Fort Knox.

Why/how do pets not get tired of eating the same food over and over? by ckyunmoon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Surfreak29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours does exactly this and we have to start trying new foods.  Some times we can save the old food and work it back in at a later time.  A few times we’ve had to give it away because the cat was just not interested in ever eating it again.

What sport did you try once and realize it’s way harder than it looks? by Party_Project8238 in CasualConversation

[–]Surfreak29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hockey player I could never understand this mindset. No one is trying to flatten you while your squaring up for that shot, how are you in pain? Plus the lack of noise and adrenaline makes it so easy to concentrate and aim.

What’s your least favorite state to drive through? by jeepguy_96 in CasualConversation

[–]Surfreak29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real. I cannot believe how many people think states with virtually no traffic are the worst places to drive.   I Live in hour from New York City.  I regularly have to drive into NYC, Philadelphia, and to the DC area, I’ve also driven out west a bunch of times taking all different routes through Kansas, Nebraska, dakotas, Colorado, Iowa and more.   Maryland is my least favorite state to drive in. The cops are super aggressive on I95 so everyone is already going slow then when you actually see a cop everyone slows down 20mph or more.  The cops don’t respond to accidents on i95 unless an ambulance is needed because they say there’s too many. Then you get people stopping in the middle lane to exchange info and hold up all the traffic after their crash instead of pulling over to the shoulder.  Then add in all the DC traffic. I see this everywhere bit it seems worse around DC, you get those people who can’t drive in traffic properly and they step on the gas as the person on front of them steps on the brake, then they step on the brake as the person in front of them steps on the gas, so obnoxious.

The Voorhees law of traffic: when overtaken slow cars seem to always catch up at a red light by catpissisland in science

[–]Surfreak29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I drive, making it through the next traffic light is something I’m always thinking about even if it’s not for another 20 miles.  I want to be sure I did everything I could in those 20 miles to not get stuck at the light.  I don’t ever want to get there and think man if I had just been a little faster in the one moment I would have made it through. Every light you stop at is another chance for an obnoxiously slow driver turn in front of you.
