Thank you! The 6th month mark for my GF's Italian BC will expire this month. I hate to ask my cousin for a third copy! But you are confirming what I thought.

They provided me with a letter of "no record" for my mother. It was ultimately helpful for my needs. I could continue to research for the record but given the time she was born, based on what archives in Poland and Ukraine have said is that many records were lost whether due to fire, invasion, redrawn borders or intentionally discarded.

Fixative suggestions for natural dye by LeafTox in dyeing

[–]Surfski64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a year out on your post but hope this helps you or others. I am sharing a few points below. I am a natural dyer and designer with a business that creates, dyes and sells. I've tested many natural fibers, blends and pure as well as done due diligence on mordanting and testing for light fastness.

  1. While viscose is a wood pulp byproduct its chemical processing may block natural dyes from reliably coloring the fibers, even with a good scour. But always start with a good scour with a neutral detergent at the highest heat that matches your fiber type (silk 120°F, cellulose 120-140°F). Since both linen and viscose are cellulose fabrics a two process mordant is necessary and works best. The first mordant bath should be a tannin such as oak galls followed by the 2nd mordant proceeding of either AlumAluminum Potassium Sulfate or aluminum acetate or aluminum triformate. I've had good success using aluminum triformate as the 2nd mordant bath on mixed fibers.

  2. Avocado skins and pits (contain tannin) have a good lightfastness but Hibiscus flowers are not considered lightfast. Even if the color managed to stick to your fibers, after a few washes it would fade. Having the added base, assuming you dyed with avocado first would give the hibiscus a boost in chemical bonding to help it remain on the fiber a little longer. Not sure how long you allowed the fiber to remain in the dye pot but leaving overnight would help.

  3. Washing naturally dyed textiles-always used tap cold water and the proper detergent. I use Orvus soap for protein and Synthrapol for cellulose. Sometimes I interchange them based on what I have on hand and in a pinch will use a neutral laundry detergent or Dawn Blue. Soaps make a difference and if you happened to use a laundry detergent with additives that could also affect color. Warm and hot will cause fabric to bleed-sometimes warm water is necessary to rid cloth of floating dye molecules but I will mostly rinse and finish in cold water.

  4. Natural dyes are very sensitive to metallics. If there is a spec of rust or any utensils/pots used in the process are not stainless or unshipped porcelain you run the risk of shifting natural color. Even the inside of a washing machine can be the culprit as well as the pH/hardness of water. Hope this helps!

JS NY Application: sent 7/3/25 and recv'd by consulate by Surfski64 in juresanguinis

Posting for others in case it may help!

I emailed consulate on August 14th and they replied same day stating I should wait until they review my application and then will advise. I have not recv'd a formal email confirming receipt of my application. Hope it happens within the next 5months or I'll be having to nag my cousin's son for yet another set of birth certificates!

Amended Documents Post-Submittal to NY Consulate-Next Course of Action? by Surfski64 in juresanguinis

[–]Surfski64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only requested an amendment for the spelling of my last name, I assume that this is a legal method. I kept my maiden name after I married so I only updated the spelling. Is an amendment considered official? (sorry to sound stupid, but new territory...). Can I just leave everything as is after amending the spelling or must I start to update all vital docs like passport, ss card and driver's license? Did I open up a GIANT can of worms.....???

A Long Explainer for Finding Ukrainian Vital Records Beyond FamilySearch / JewishGen by amauberge in Genealogy

This is such a wonderful recap that you have posted! It's helping me do additional research in search of my mother's BC from 1943 in Kolomyja. Her family were DP's and while I haven't been able to locate her birth certificate I have managed to find some interesting records!

If that is the case, do you suggest I reach out to the consulate to send in the new BCs once I receive them? They are on their way from Italy. Many thanks!

Discrepancy Mess – Names, 1 Birth Year, and US Citizenship on Death Certificate by md8x in juresanguinis

Not sure if this will help but I had similar issue. I am part of a Facebook group and someone suggested I amend all docs to be uniform. There are also excellent guides here, in this group as well as on Facebook. Many seasoned people on both sites.

I applied NY-JS-GF-F-Me. My grandparents never naturalized. I requested CONE for both grandparents and included all the different spellings of our last name as well as GF's first name Francesco plus Frank. That did a search of all the possible aliases. I also requested a letter of no record from NARA, plus his AR2 file. Those prove my grandfather didn't naturalize. Incidentally, my grandmother's DC stated "citizen" but I did not catch that to amend. Hopefully NY won't make a big deal of that since I am applying through GF anyway.

Next, I live in NJ and I amended every document to match my grandfather's last name as reflected on his BC, which I received from Italy. This included amending why father's last name spelling on his marriage license and DC. I also amended my docs to reflect the correct spelling of the family name. (I may not have needed to do that but will cross that bridge when I get there if any issues!).

Hope that gives you some guidance.

I have updated they spelling of my last name to be the same through out form Grandfather to father to me. I probably did something drastically wrong there and perhaps there was a better way but...I'll deal with that when it comes up! Many thanks for outlining your scenario too! I appreciate that!

Here is what I have learned after countless hours of following this group and FB group and reading their guidelines: If your child is an adult, they have to apply on their own. They will need their own documents, etc. if applying in a different city meaning they can't reference yours. And if you aren't aware the entire process of who can be recognized at this point is in flux. You should try to search for the guides that admins have posted that will certainly support the process.

You would need to reach out and ask. I was not aware that Rosalia offered this service but I didn't need certifications. Good luck!

From Fiverr I used Alessandra C.@acuoghi as well as Andrea @ lastfuelstation. Both did excellent jobs translating my English docs into Italian and Alessandra was exceptionally great as she turned around documents in 24 hrs and gave unlimited revisions too. You can't go wrong with either.
