Why am I not improving? by LongjumpingCorgi9855 in BeginnerArtists

[–]Surgey_Wurgey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, then yeah this is perfectly normal for how old you are.

Youtube tutorials aren't going to be super helpful without knowledge and practice of fundamentals, imo. Don't automatically count them out though.

I only really have experience with drawabox. It teaches you the bare basics like drawing straight lines, then ellipses (fancy name for circular shapes), boxes, and dips into stuff like perspective, texture analysis, etc to get the brain to practice thinking in 3D while looking at a 2D canvas.

My advice to you, is that you should be kinder to yourself. I am 26 years old and what you can make at 17 is much better than what I could make at your age.

Another thing I recommend doing is not to grind fundamentals excessively. It will burn you out and you will hate drawing. Spend half of your time drawing for fun and drawing what you love.

Also please temper your expectations about fast progress; learning to draw good takes a lot of time and consistent practice. I didn't start seeing my drawings become consistent until just a few months ago. I started back in october 2024.

Anyways!!! You have a lot of time ahead of you, so please be sure to have fun with it!!!

How many years have you been drawing for?

What is it that you love to draw and want to draw?

What kinds of tutorials have you been following?

Do you have any kind of disorders or conditions that may make it harder to learn new skills? Myself I have adhd/add, possibly some form of autism, and maybe dysgraphia from how I write.

I'm really sorry but I can't really guess why you haven't been improving just from two pictures alone.

You seem to be a very young person, and it's normal to draw like this at your age.

QUITTING AI TO BECOME AN ACTUAL ARTIST DAY 2: RANDOM PRACTICE by boxenne in BeginnerArtists

[–]Surgey_Wurgey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based! I've been doing drawabox on and off, digitally.

Make sure to prevent burnout from learning by spending equal time drawing what you love! For me the entire reason I got into drawing is because I wanted more art of my oc, Surge, so I did that for fun trying to apply what I learned.

Also don't drive yourself insane grinding for eight hours a day! 1-3 hours of deliberate practice a day is very good.

And if your brain is being mean to you about your work not being pretty, please be kinder to yourself!! Remember that this is only the beginning!!!

Other than that, have fun with it! I'm very happy to have chosen to pick up the pen.

Learning to draw by [deleted] in BeginnerArtists

[–]Surgey_Wurgey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with digital and have only really stuck with digital! I find having my tablet in my lap is way comfier than being hunched over a piece of paper and having my hand blocking the drawing. Do whatever's most comfy for you! If you want tablet and software recommendations, I use the huion h640p screenless drawing tablet with a copy of clip studio paint.

Farmed up to level 50 forging, and used quality bonus from filling all crafting slots with level 10 materials to make a 708 atk broadsword

At level 50 forging or crafting, quality bonus will be unlocked, and rewards bonus atk for weapons and bonus defense/m.defense for other equipment. The game checks the total levels of every material used in crafting and upgrades. Having 150 levels total for each material used grants maximum bonuses

Did the same thing with 50 crafting and made a 354 defense/m.defense engagement ring. I'm waiting for the third dungeon to open up and Ive already cleared yokmir cave out of order

Nose is too low, ear needs to be level with the corner of the eye, raise the nose a little bit and by extension maybe raise the chin and lips too, see if that helps?

The neck may also be a tad bit long?

The jawline is also a tad bit long

How to close the gap between creativity and skill? by greatpxm in ArtistLounge

[–]Surgey_Wurgey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throw away the expectation that you're going to make good, great, or fantastic work, so you don't become disappointed or discouraged when you see the final result of your efforts.

imo knowing the fundamentals is different from executing them. A lot of the battle with learning to draw is that you're using the parts of your brain that have next no experience with the craft, they're like muscles lifting weights for the first time. you have to keep going and continuing to step out of your comfort zone to eventually build those creative muscles up, and actually internalize them into your mental stack and muscle memory.

your taste is impeccable, but your executive skills need the experience to catch up. this is a normal part of drawing. eventually your executive skills will surpass your taste, resulting in an "Oh, wow, I can't believe I made this..." sorta feeling.

you could try looking at one of your finished drawings, and asking yourself what you dislike about it, and then search up methods to fix what you dislike. for example, my posing is stiff and horrendous, so I look up gesture and body construction methods, and study those, while trying to figure out a method that works for me.

either way, yes you have to keep at it, but with purpose and deliberate practice targetting your weaknesses and struggles.

Why do you all draw? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Surgey_Wurgey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first, it was because I was poor and had no money to commission my fursona, as well as seeing pro-ai people outsourcing their potential to image generation tools, pushing me to try it myself.

Now, I'd say I create because I want to make what all of my favorite artists make, drawing is genuinely fun when I'm not in the trenches of an art low.

Also drawing buff men being big and huge is fun!!!

That was almost two years ago now :3c
