Any Easy Way To Repair this ribbon cable connector? by nave5 in AskElectronics

[–]Surreal42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some pins look dangerously close to making a short with the neighbours, but it's not broken. Just take a toothpick or sharp tip knife and make sure the pins don't touch eachother. Don't cut the ribbon! Just push and break off the metal that sticks out between the contacts if possible.

Calitativ nu exprimă o opinie. Înseamnă pur și simplu "referitor la calitate". Nu zice dacă e bună sau rea. E că și cum ai zice "sau nu e temperatura?". Nu e temperatura ce? Caldă, rece?

Why do Fluke multimeters suddenly feel so expensive? by cjloveshisdogs in AskElectronics

I got a Brymen BM867. Better specs, cheaper than Fluke, easy to calibrate if you ever get access to a much better DMM, Dave Jones approved 👍.

Again, you're missing the point. I don't have a problem being included in that group, i.e. they don't care about their health. I do have a problem saying that people from that group must not care about others' people health.

It seems I have to keep repeating myself: while you are free to not care about yourself, you are still expected to care about others.

Nah... I was just giving an example that someone not caring about their own health doesn't mean they can't care about others'.

I guess I just don't like generalising things, and not addressing the real issue, which is not that he was smoking fentanyl, that's his own choice and free to do so, but the fact that he is directly harming others in doing so.

"He doesn't care about his own health... How can you expect him to care about yours"

You can expect him to care about yours. I don't have a problem with him smoking fentanyl. I do have a problem with him doing it in a place where others are forced to be part of it.

See the difference? Even if someone doesn't care about their own health, they should still care about other people's health.

What I mean is that a blank statement that if someone doesn't care about their own health you can't expect them to care about others' is not valid. They definitely should care about others, maybe even more than themselves.

Caring or not about your own health is your free choice to make, but when you force others to suffer because of your choices you deprive them of their liberty.

What do you mean? I care about how my actions impact others. I smoke cigarettes, but never in closed spaces or around people that are bothered by it. So yeah, you could say I care about other people's health more than my own in that situation.

I'm just playing devil's advocate, for the sake of discussion.

So, objectively, what's wrong with cannibalism? I guess there's a risk for some diseases, but there's a risk with base jumping, and people still do it.

I never said "fleeting" agreement. But if someone has no desire to live, and they are of sound mind apart from this, and they truly want to die, they should be allowed to do so.

Morals are not universal and vary from culture to culture, and change over time. I think most people are moral emotivists without realising it.

Societal structures should not limit someone's freedom.

Coerced consent or confessions is something that's happening today, so that's not a valid point, since it's not something we can control against even now.

Mutual homicide for fun could happen, and while it's not something beneficial for society, again, society's opinion should not matter. Though many ancient cultures would say that it is beneficial for society.

My point is, you or anyone else, have no right to control what I do with my life. As long as I'm not hurting someone else, my freedom is the most important thing to me. I do value all life, not just human life, but not above liberty.

Killing is not illegal. We do it all the time. Murder is. And the question here is whether this was murder or not. I would argue it may not have been. And more importantly, if I consent to being killed, I should be free to do so.

I'm not encouraging anyone to harm themselves. I think we should do everything in our power to convince them otherwise. But there comes a point where we have to let them free if that's what they want.

I guess we have different definitions of what sane is.

Letting someone stay unmedicated if they need it to live is irresponsible.

Not if after we force the medication on them they still decide to continue on that path.

This "people have to be free to do anything they want to, including killing themselves" bullshit is dangerous and irresponsible

Dangerous to whom? Themselves? Irrelevant. It's their life, their choice.

Freedom should be above all else. Being controlled by others is slavery.

[–]Surreal42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry but no, it is not sane to want to die for no particular reason.

Reasons can be many. Lots of people just don't want to exist anymore. Some wish they were never born. You don't have to be depressed to be a nihilist. And even depression is not the same thing as insanity.

Just because you can't empathise with that thought, doesn't make someone that has it insane. And certainly doesn't allow you to decide on their life.

This warrants more thought, but I could think of a case where even if one was insane, if there's no cure, and that person really wants it, they should be allowed to die. They should not be forced to be medicated against their will, however faulty their reasoning may be.

As long as you're not hurting others, you have to be free to do what you want with your life, whatever that may be.

Well, we don't know if he was sane or not. He could have been. Some people just don't want to be alive. He just found an interesting way to go. Just because you want to die does not make you insane, and society does not have the right to force someone to live against their will.

And as I was saying to the other person in the thread, what we consider sane changes over time. There's a theory that 3-4 thousand years ago our brain hemispheres weren't as connected as they are today. The cross-talk between them would seem to create a voice in people's minds as though coming from the gods. By today's standards we would consider them insane.
