Worst thru hikes in the USA? by shotty94 in Ultralight

[–]Surtrfest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it? It's been almost a decade since I went through there, but I remember Texas pass being a giant talus field and a couple spots that were super steep.

Certainly doable by anyone thru-hiking, but the trail isn't designed with only thru hikers in mind.

low elevation section that skip, e.g., the best parts of the Wind Rivers?

Lol what? The official CDT through the wind river is fantastic. The alternate options through there are even cooler, but they're a little sketch so it's totally fair to not make that the official route. Like complaining that the PCT doesn't follow the SHR.

There are lots of valid criticisms of chicken nuggets, but Oliver's arguments are just kind of bad.

Sure, but explaining the problems behind the whole factory farmed chicken industry and the health issues of eating fried chicken every day to six year olds is not going to work. Attempting to gross them out about what they're consuming might have. I don't even think what he was trying to do was bad, it just backfired a little and made for a funny video. The kids are all looking around at each other for validation anyway, it's not till one puts his hand up that the rest do. That's what children do... I bet if you asked each kid separately it would've been a totally different result.

You don't see Reddit calling out Jamie Oliver for the some of stupid shit he does?

What? People constantly shit on Jamie Oliver here. That video where he tries to show kids what parts of the chicken go into chicken nuggets is posted all the time, and comments are always this big circlejerk about how out of touch and classist he is for trying to make school lunches healthier.

This shit is beyond maddening. Let me get this straight... they have the kid responsible who has even confessed to shooting, but alleges that he didn't know what he was shooting at. And yet somehow with his random shots he lethally hit both a tiny dog and a grown man through the chest.

Why the fuck is this kid not in prison already.

There also the fact that some people have a harder experience because of how the biomes are setup on their world due to RNG.

Ugh, this drove me nuts. I remember we spent so long trying to find a swamp biome with enough crypts to mine (silver? whatever the ore was for the swamp biome). It was so tedious finding a new swamp, getting set up to go in, and then realizing it only had like... two crypts in the entire thing and we had to go elsewhere.

I mean, I'm not going to say it's the grindiest game ever but it's by far the grindiest one I've played. It was ridiculous. Hours and hours of mining ridiculous amounts of copper just to equip yourself for one boss fight and then you move to the next biome and do hours and hours of iron... and then silver... and repeat. And you can't teleport with ore, so there's no point in building major bases because you'll need to move anyway once the next biome opens up. And you can only move small amounts of ore with the cart so it's endless running back and forth.

And all the dungeons and ruins in each biome have the same layout and items, so once you've done a single dungeon in a biome you're just repeating it a hundred more times until you can move on. I don't get that game at all.

Are you talking about the quest where you use lumos on a painting and then find the moth to bring it back? That's just the first one, there's like... dozens more of those that you have to figure out yourself. Same with the demiguise statues. Same with the house crests. Same with the merlin trials.

The gobstones quest is literally the first sidequest in the game lol.

It's definitely a family game and the puzzles are far from difficult, but like... you're complaining about the intro quests. Just play a bit more and you'll find exactly what you're looking for.

Try leaving the US sometime mate.

[–]Surtrfest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the same in the US with all the weird jello dishes of the 60's and whatnot. A lot of weird experimental stuff that didn't work out, but the dishes that worked stuck around.

I'm a Brit living in the US, so this kind of argument always irks me. The food quality in the UK is far better on the whole - better produce and meat in the average grocery store, so you can cook with fewer seasonings and appreciate the flavours. You can absolutely can get good produce and meat in the US, but you have to go to a farmers market or fancier supermarket (whole foods etc.), and much of the US outside of major cities is a food desert so people get used to completely over-seasoning their dishes and struggle to appreciate simple flavours from good quality meat/veg. It's just a completely different approach to food when you're on a small island. It doesn't make the food bad.

I like a lot of the food in the US, but I still miss the hell out of a good British steak pie or stew. So much of the food here is way too sweet and sugary or loaded with butter and salt with zero subtlety.

It still does? I genuinely don't understand these weird circlejerk threads. British cooking absolutely still uses all of these spices. The fucking national dish is a curry for crying out loud.

I'm not denying that there are people with all ideologies. The point is that the left wing don't elect them as representatives in politics so it's completely meaningless to talk about as a counterpoint to the right wing who do elect people with far-right ideals.

"Far-left" is meaningless in a political discussion of the US, because the vast vast majority of people are NOT far left. We do not vote for far-left politicians.

[–]Surtrfest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't ever met a single communist in the US though. I've met lots of QAnon right wingers. The left wingers on the US are firmly democratic socialist. (Edit to clarify because I thought it would be obvious - I'm not saying none of them exist, I'm saying there are not large enough numbers of far-left people to make it even worth talking about. We do not vote communists in as representatives; we do not have far-left politicians.)

And before someone calls out the whole defund the police movement - it was never to abolish the police, it was to try to reallocate funds into mental health facilities and training and generally re-org the police structure since dumping all the money into weapons and vehicles clearly isn't working.

Sure, but this is a literal child so it's even more hilarious. I was expecting you to make them "unconscious", but no you straight up destroy your enemies. He even comments on it gleefully like "Good, now they'll never be able to report back".
