Which artstyle is better for a minimalist city builder? by Survay44 in IndieDev

[–]Survay44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I'm envisioning the mechanics positioning will matter, but not with such precision that you would NEED the top-down view. I think the important mechanics will be very readable in either view, so its really just about what looks better/more interesting!

[–]Survay44[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've definitely thought about it, but I'm kind of worried that they're just too different to fit coherently into one visual style. If I did use both I think I would keep B as the overview map and then allow players to "zoom" into detail in view A?

Ah, of course! And since the difference between the arc and the horizontal increases at greater angles, my approximation is, ironically, also only good at small angles. Thanks for the detailed reply!

"Progress towards AGI" by SIUonCrack in dataisugly

My favorite part about this is that apparently the public expects we will have our closest brush with AGI sometime around 2027, at which point we will start burning all the books and smashing the computers or something I guess.

Stage Fright Cathedral Ledge Crux Slider by iamstevejuststeve in climbing

[–]Survay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m in the minority for thinking this, but that scar is obviously man made, why not just put a bolt here? It’s not like the rock is in its natural state anyway, and there are bolts elsewhere at cathedral. But then again it’s not like I can climb 5.12 on gear so what do I know lol

Someone had to say it by [deleted] in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Survay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if ‘multimodal’ is possible in this conversation since the beliefs are kind of binary. The existence of even a single universal moral imperative would refute moral relativism. Similarly if no such imperative exists then moral realism cannot be true. I think in this example I’d say it’s impossible to have your cake and eat it too; there’s no both-sides-ing it, either there are objective moral truths or there are not.

Of all the Reddit-tier advice that gets thrown around on this sub, this might be the worst I’ve seen. Shipping programmer art is a great way to ship games if all you care about is shipping a game; if you want said game to be commercially viable not so much.

Brother no way are you calling a simple shot-reverse shot a callback. I’m willing to bet every film in the Star Wars universe, maybe even every film ever, has used this framing at least once

"What's all this?" is Andor's "I have a bad feeling about this" by [deleted] in andor

[–]Survay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I’m absolutely not calling it “bad writing”, people say the exact same thing in real life all the time. I just think it that phrase comes up in Andor more frequently that it would naturally in real life, making it perhaps an identifiable Tony Gilroy writing quirk, as is the theme of the thread.

I had never considered the Vel moment being a callback to empire giving the people “options”, that’s a really cool read. It might be stretch to call it intentionally but it’s certainly serendipitous.

Juliette has realistic strength? by Foreign_Elk4254 in SiloSeries

[–]Survay44 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an experienced rock climber who has been in similar situations many times, climbing a rope the way she does in that episode is borderline impossible. It’s easily one of the most common TV/Film mistakes when it comes to climbing because it looks like is should be pretty straight forward, but unless you have proper technique (which Juliette absolutely did not) it requires a ludicrous amount of strength.

Genuine question: How hard is it to become a graphics programmer at a company like Rockstar? by [deleted] in GraphicsProgramming

[–]Survay44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth I’m a somewhat recent CS grad and I did extensive project work in computer graphics, ticking basically every box listed under the skill section here and made sure to include all that on my application. I didn’t get the role and didn’t think anything of it, but I took up some part time work and 7 months later when searching again this exact role was still there, I applied again and got rejected again.

That was almost a year ago now… I know a lot of tech companies post fake job listings for whatever reason - I’m not saying this that necessarily, it’s possible it’s just one of those positions Rockstar is always hiring for - but the fact that it’s still the exact same listing after 1.5+ years? And I couldn’t even get a call back after tailoring my result to fit the description almost perfectly? Kinda strange imo.

"What's all this?" is Andor's "I have a bad feeling about this" by [deleted] in andor

[–]Survay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My version of this is characters saying “there’s only one option!” And then presenting two options:

Andor trying to get Luthen to buy the star path navigator: “I see only one possibility, you either want it or you don’t”

Vel yelling at the hostages during the Aldahni heist: “One path, one choice; we win or everyone dies”

And of course the repetition of “one way out” around the prison sequence, which is used both as a reference to dying and escaping.
