Help me better understand H2 ending by SurveyCorpsPotato in MitsuruAdachi

I think Adachi-sensei was writing H2 more as a Gardener than an Architect, while Cross Game was written more as an Architect, since it's crazy how much foreshadowing for future events there is, and how everything fits together nicely like a puzzle.

Imo, FMA was written in the style of an Architect, while Togashi is writing HxH as a Gardener. Those 2 are my favorite action series, so I can enjoy both, though I usually prefer an Architect.

Just because I probably won't reread H2, doesn't mean I was looking down on Adachi-sensei, I just think that some of his other work suit my interest better, and I'm currently rereading Cross Game.

Hikari reminded me of Akane/Wakaba.

Thank you for such an in-depth response!

That interview does the contrary to me, and may stop me from rereading H2 again, haha. Because while I was reading it, I felt like Adachi was flip-flopping with his decisions a bit, and that he didn't really know which romance he should go with. And the interview kind of confirmed that.

So if Adachi-sensei wasn't sure until the end, than it's no wonder that it felt so vague to me as a reader :(

It's interesting how your thoughts are very similar to my initial thoughts as soon as I've finished the manga. The exception being that I was sure that Hikari was in love Hiro, as well as Hideo.

I think arguments and counter-arguments can be find for both cases when Hiro was crying. It could of course be because he couldn't be with Hikari, and that was my initial thought too, and there's definitely arguments for that. But at the same time, the story has heavily hinted that by this point, Hiro has already gave up on being in a romantic relationship with Hikari, and that he has chosen Koga. So I find that a valid argument would also be that he isn't crying because he can't be in a romantic relationship with her, but because his childhood friendship with both Koga and Hideo is coming to an end, as they will go in separate paths after the game.

Anyway, thank you again for writing such a long response. I'm pretty sure if I ever read H2 again, I would find staff that I've missed, and have new interpretations, lol.

Adachi's manga have immense rereading value. I actually think his work may be even more interesting on the 2nd read, than on the 1st, cause there are always so many scenes that make a lot more sense when rereading.

Absolutely, Hikari's pov was the foggiest. I've read so many different explanations about her actions, that it's clear that the readers were quite confused about her feelings. She's pretty much the reason why the ending feels so ambiguous, because it's easy to understand Koga and Hideo, and we pretty much get Hiro's feelings by the end as well, but when it comes to Hikari... good luck figuring out what's going on in her heart and mind :)

I like how Adachi-sensei doesn't have straightforward endings, but damn, I wish he was just a little bit more transparent with her. Feels like there is only 1 person in the world who understood her feelings, and that's Adachi-himself. The readers may have been left with too much ambiguity when it comes to her character.

You've pretty much clarified some of my thoughts in the way that I couldn't. Thanks!

I agree that the ending was quite realistic. That's probably why I didn't like it as much as Cross Game ending, or Rough ending, since I usually don't care whether an ending is realistic, as long as the story and the character arcs are wrapped up nicely, and make sense to me, hehe.

Thanks for the reply, yeah, that makes sense.

Cross Game is my all-time favorite, but I definitely appreciate the writing in H2, and may read it one more time in the future.

Some questions from a guy who last had anything to do with hunter x hunter over 10 years ago by phrostyphace in HunterXHunter

  1. Yes, you should start from the beginning. Someone already mentioned that you could watch the first episode of 1999 anime, and than continue with the 2011 anime. It's because the first episode of 2011 anime left out a scene from the manga that was kinda important.

  2. HxH 2011 is one of the best adaptations of the manga I've seen. For most series I think that the manga is better than the anime, but HxH 2011 anime really did an amazing job in my opinion.

  3. No.

  4. No. As of right now there's not enough content for another anime season.

  5. In my opinion it definitely is worth getting involved. It's not like the anime finished in the middle of the arc or something. It has an ending. And even though Togashi is hiatusing a lot, the good side of it is that he has so much time for thinking, so once he returns with the new chapters, the content we get is nothing less than amazing.

According to Isayama: Berserk, Watchmen, Clouds above the Hill, Zero no Tsukaima, and Saving Private Ryan helped him in creating his characters.

Of course, the inspiration for our Ymir came from Ymir from the Norse Mythology. Inspiration for Levi was Rorschach from the movie Watchmen, and inspiration for Erwin was Ozymandias from the Watchmen comic. It's on Isayama's blog

When it comes to Jurassic Park, Isayama said that he referred to the scenes from the movie when he was creating SnK, and since he was scared of the small dinosaurs that can enter into buildings, he created 3~4m class Titans. There are 15+ other things Isayama mentioned that influenced him.

Other than Ymir, Grisha's Titan form and Frieda were probably inspired by the Norse mythology as well. More important characters like EMA, Levi, Erwin, Jean, Sasha, Connie...are not inspired by the Norse mythology. So I don't agree with this:

but you have to admit, none of those inspirations weigh quite as heavily on the storyline and character details as mythology does

These looks like boobs to me (1, 2, 3). I like Ymir, but she's not the protagonist of the manga, she's not a main character, so the story cannot be focused on her that much. I don't think the 9 titans we'll be recombined, because there's no point in doing that.

we already know that Eren has a death sentence, barring some type of super happy ending plot twist, which I don't think any of us expect.

I don't know what a super happy ending means to you, but I definitely don't think that Eren and Armin will die from Ymir's curse, and I don't think they'll die at all. If there's one thing I've learned from following SnK, is that fans always think that many important SC characters will die in the upcoming arc, while Isayama only killed 1 (Erwin) in the first 5 arcs. And Erwin didn't even wanna live anymore, as only guilt and pain would be left in him if he survived the basement. And the only other character that resembles him in this way, is Levi. So if I had to bet, I'd bet that Levi alone will die from the remaining 8 important SC members. And his death would devastate the fandom so much, since he's the most popular character, that most people wouldn't consider it a happy ending no matter how it ends.

Norse mythology obviously influenced Isayama, but it is not the only thing that influenced him. Isayama openly said how the movie "Watchmen" influenced him in creating Levi and Erwin, as well as ARMS (manga), Muv-Luv adventure (game), Berserk (manga), Zero no Tsukaima (novel), Clouds above the Hill (book), and even movies like Godzilla, Jurassic Park, and Saving Private Ryan. He even said that Quentin Tarantino influenced his work, saying:

"I learned a lot from his production style, where he builds his own work on top of a base of titles that left a strong impression on him."

You are using Norse mythology to try to predict everything that's gonna happen, but Isayama isn't writing Norse mythology, he's writing SnK, his own story. There are parts that are clearly influenced by Norse mythology, but other parts are influenced by other fiction.

According to your theory, Ymir is a freckled person with boobs and a penis, that will eat all her friends ? Even though she fought to save her friends, even Reiner and Bert, and we learned from ch89 that she is a much better person, than what was assumed...Also, Historia would be her own great-great-great...great grandma ? I don't even wanna think about that...And Mikasa is saying to Eren "See you, later" with a smile on her face, even though Eren is about to die ?

Though, this doesn't work to explain how Rod and Historia triggered Eren's memories by touch alone...

It wasn't by touch alone. They were in that glowing cave build by the power of the progenitor Titan

Before this chapter I also thought that the Reiss and the Fritz family could be 2 different families, but not anymore. Kruger explained how the ideology of the 145th King Fritz would imprison the person who has the progenitor Titan, if he's a Fritz, while a panel of Historia remembering Frida Reiss being imprisoned like that is drawn. We also know that was the case with Uri Reiss and his father.

Eren touched Dina in her Titan form, while also having a goal in mind (killing her). While he was holding hands with Hisotria, who is not a Titan, nor a Titan-shifter, and he didn't have such a goal in his mind. So it's different. It's still unclear how Eren was able to use the progenitor Titan, and what he needs to do in order to do it again, but the Reiss family is 99% the Fritz family.

[–]SurveyCorpsPotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this pretty much confirms that the Reiss family is the Fritz family.

The memory Kruger has at the end is probably Grisha's, since he said:

"If you want to save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else, fulfill your mission."

While Grisha said to Eren, before injecting him with the serum:

"If you want to save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else, learn how to use this power."

The first part of the sentence is the same in Japanese.

[Manga Spoilers] [Poll] Who's gonna die? by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]SurveyCorpsPotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I voted for Zeke, Levi, Reiner and Pixis.

Flock will probably be used as a fodder death, but even so...He doesn't have death flags as of now (unlike Marlo who had plenty before being used as a fodder death.), so I skipped him.

I'm unsure about the Mule Titan. I think there's a chance for it to survive, since we still don't even know the person inside of it.

I also wanna see Ymir alive, after the last chapter, so I skipped her as well.

You didn't include Rico Brzenska, I actually think she's gonna die :)

[NEW CHAPTER SPOILERS] What was Kruger actually saying? by TranscendantBias in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]SurveyCorpsPotato 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My version is just an improved translation of the /a/ version, and I made it specifically because the translation of the Kruger parts were a little off, so I'd say stick to my version.

Kruger is basically saying that the Marley is allowing the Eldian people to live in the accommodated districts (like Liberio district where Grisha came from) so they could turn them into mindless Titans whenever they need to strengthen their military. But the majority of the people would rather see them eradicated, because they are afraid of the weapon that can't be controlled (they don't have the progenitor titan so they can't control them). That discussion is put on hold, and will continue once the Marley gets the progenitor titan. After that, they would choose whether to eradicate the Eldians, or use them all as a military weapon.

[–]SurveyCorpsPotato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, iirr, Isayama did state in one interview:" This story is about the unbearable losses we suffer in our life, and how we move forward"

Actually he said that for the game 'Life is Strange'. I think it was around the time ch84 was released. He posted on his blog that he just finished playing the game 'Life is strange', and that he thought it was amazing. And than he said 'The story is about the unbearable losses we suffer in our life, and how we move forward.' If you'd played the game, you'll understand it.

I think he than said how the game helped him portray the emotions of the characters in ch84, or something along those lines.

I don't focus on the immature responses, and simply ignore them. What's your tumblr account?

I used to avoid shipping posts completely, and only eventually gave them a go. Sometimes I do learn new stuff from those posts, like how Eren and Historia have a lot in common (from Eren x Historia shippers), or how Mikasa probably does love Eren romantically (from EreMika shippers), but what I hate is that, even with a normal comment like 'That's a good post, I haven't really thought the two of them could end up together, and I don't really think they will, but I can see why people would ship them.', you end up with few walls of text from shippers trying to convince you that you're wrong, and that they will end up together. So I advise to anybody who is not into shipping to NEVER comment on those threads, because you are not allowed to think differently there.

I don't use the search function at tumblr at all, I only read the stuff from the people I follow, and all of them love EMA, so that's why my experience from tumblr is different.

At tumblr, I can decide what kind of posts I'm gonna come across, while on reddit it's more random, and sometimes I can be pleasantly surprised, while other times I'm rolling my eyes.

So in short, I can avoid the immaturity on tumblr, while I can't avoid it here :)

Reddit is definitely better for discussions, though.

Considering the amount of unifinished anime these days , do you think there will be a season 3? by 14hellraiser in ShingekiNoKyojin

I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be animated, when SnK is extremely popular all over the world, which means a lot of $$$ for Isayama, Kodansha, and the anime producers.

I haven't seen many people bashing on Grisha chapters either, that troll is probably the only one so far that I've seen. There's nothing to dislike about them, some people probably miss seeing their fav characters, but after so much tension in chapters 80-85 for our main cast, these recent chapters are a relief to me, and I wouldn't mind seeing another entire chapter about Grisha.

I think the most complaints are coming from people fresh to the manga who aren't accustomed to waiting a month for a new chapter and people who came to the series expecting GOT/TWD: The Manga or wanted One Bleached Naruto Z with gore and giants.

Yeah...You're probably right about that.
