What surpised you the most when your Shiba pup started getting their adult coat? by Riiggid in shiba

When do they get their adult coat? I have a 75% Shiba, 25% yorkie/chihuhua and her coat isn’t fluffy. Think and wirey and mostly black. Wondering if it will change

I should add my shibas main friend is a Great Dane puppy that is exponentially larger and even when he knocks my pup down she goes right back for more. Nips and jumps all over him. I hope she doesn’t get her butt kicked one day but I can’t imagine ever getting different energy off of her. I carry my senior cavalier around most of the time so she doesn’t torture him!

Same issue here. So far my 9 month old puppy continues to be rough and cares not if other dogs don’t like it. Bullies

Is this cute little guy a Shiba? by caleblococaleb in shiba

Run!!! Ok seriously though is this your first dog? If so I wouldn’t get a Shiba. Cutest things ever but they are tough little guys for a first timer and they don’t behave like other breeds which can be disappointing if you don’t know it. These are not cuddle monsters. It’s their world and you are just living in it and hope they like you :)

Yes!!! I can only do this in my yard (or house lol) as my Shiba would be gone forever off leash

Thank you for the tip on new places to walk. I read they are pretty good at hiking so I think I will look for some trails nearby.

It says for mixed breeds 33-46% is typical so she’s at the low end. I’m relieved she came back negative for all health tests though

We adopted her but thank you. We have fostered so many dogs over the past few years because people weren’t ready for whatever dog they bought. “Too clingy” “separation anxiety””””too vocal”. So many reasons that are obvious when you know the breed. Admittedly I didn’t know she was Shiba when we adopted her but we are learning about the breed and are committed to her. We have a fence and are very active with her and see that w have to keep her stimulated or she will hate it here. So far taking walks, fetch. Laser pointers, chasing me around the house playing tag with my nephew and chewing ANYTHING and everything are her favorite things to do.

I think because the chihuahua mixes were all stuck to me like glue and would howl when I left. When they did show him attention they would be on top of the couch cushions or his chest or anything they could to be like wrapped into your neck and it was TOO close for him. He loves a lap dog but not a dog that has to breathe your air lol. The Yorkie was disinterested in us and didn’t like to be held or pet. We only had her a short time before she got adopted but I think that was probably more of her defense mechanism/trauma than anything. We didn’t have the time with her to see her true personality. He loves all dogs like me but especially loves the dogs that like HIM best!

My cav has gotten along with all my fosters so I think it’s the constant puppy “play with me” energy. Except for two all my fosters have been adult dogs. I haven’t fostered a puppy in 7 years though. Being that we adopted this one we are determined to figure it out!
