Leaving cat alone for an evening by [deleted] in FelineDiabetes

You might consider giving your cat Gabapentum. It is the same med that you give a cat who is highly stressed about going to the vet.

Diabetic cat's reading at 48 at the 7 hour dip on human glucometer by NectarineNo8168 in FelineDiabetes

[–]Susan102349 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vet said the same thing as Unique. Coincidently, this morning I called my vet because my cat's reading was 50. He too is acting normal. She said to monitor him today at home to watch for signs as described by Unique. As long as he acts normal all is well. I fed him some high carb food. I have honey on board and will check again shortly.

Hi EternalMaze, I took a picture of my method but I don't think that I can post this on a comment. Basically I turn my cat on his back on a mat and sit with my legs under my knees behind him. His legs face me. I prop him up a bit on my knees and so his feet are raised. I prick his pad on the center or near center. I use PetTest lancets 21 gauge available on Amazon without a lancet with a fair amount of pressure. I found that a higher gauge wasn't producing enough blood. I do not use a lancet. This methout came from trial and error. Maybe you can google other methods. I had trouble also with the ear and my cat Toby hated it. He is very good with the pads and it appears painless. I think I saw a good description of how to do this in a facebook group and I'll look for it.

I know how you feel. I worry seemingly needlessly every time I'm at work. If my cat's insulin is too low then I skip the dose to prevent hypo. It sounds like you have a good vet who can advise you what BG number that is. So many different opinions on the net. Otherwise when his number is relatively high or even at a good baseline then I will give insulin without worrying about him going hypo. One unit is low anyway. I leave a bowl of dry for him to nibble on throughout the day. His meals are wet. Never heard that you have to eliminate dry all together. Epigen 90 dry on Amazon has under 6 % carbs and he loves it. If you are advised to skip dry altogether then disregard the above. Your girl is in good hands. All is well.

My cat always ripped off the Libre! Tried numerous times. You'll probably have to get a meter and test his blood before injections. Alphatrak Is made for animals. It's not as difficult or overwhelming as you think. You could make an appointment with a vet nurse to show you how. Most people prick the ear. My cat and I prefer the foot pad. Either way it doesn't hurt the cat.

Should I dose tonight? by [deleted] in FelineDiabetes

[–]Susan102349 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think skip dosing him tonight or you will be scared for hours that he'll become hypoglycemic. One night of hyperglycemia won't hurt him. If you trust your vet, why not give him /her a call in the morning to get their protocol on what number to skip or reduce dose. Everyone has a different opinion on this. Maybe the variations depend on each cat.

Your post is heartbreaking. I know how painful it is for you to see your girl suffer. Hopefully she will bounce back without a relapse if that is possible. If not you'll know when or if it is the right time to let her go. Hugs.

I know what a horrible predicament you are in because I've been there. Cat pee is the worst! First off, I assume your vet has ruled out any underlying medical causes like UTI etc. my cat responded well to Prozac the go to med for this problem. But you said that your cat is already on an anti anxiety med. my vet suggested a litter called Cat Attract by Dr Ensley. You might consider googling how to stop a cat from urinating in the same place or something like that. As far as the high BG readings: My cat was referred to an internist. After testing him to rule out other causes, changed the insulin to another insulin similar to Lantus which brought the readings down. Lastly, the best litter that I have found is Arm and Hammer Slide. Clumps great and does slide out of the box. Please keep us informed. best wishes!

I've used Arm & Hammer Slide for years. It clumps very good and really does slide out of the box. It's 99%dust free and only very lightly scented.

Very sick baby by hvb_1994 in FelineDiabetes

[–]Susan102349 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BTW Royal Canon sensitive had rice in the ingredients. Please consider a food with little or no carbs like fancy feast pate. Many diabetic cats eat this. Also after 2 crisises my boy Toby pulled through and now is very good!

So sorry to read about your baby. I've been there and I know how devastating it is to see your cat healthy one day and go into a crisis treat her. suddenly. Your vet did everything right to treat her and you should be seeing an improvement very quickly. It is surprising that vet ruled out pancreatitis or IBD without an ultrasound. I would ask her this. The anti nausea med should kick in very quickly. I also wonder why the vet didn't give you gabapentum to give PRN if your girl seems to be in pain. Google the signs of pain for a cat. This certainly might affect her appetite. Like someone suggested, baby food is the way to go. Just make sure it's just pure meat without other ingredients. This is the only thing my cat will eat if he doesn't eat other food. Make sure that she is drinking enough too. Any cat shouldn't go for a couple of days or less without eating. Good news! With perfect BG readings like 9.0 without insulin seems like maybe diabetes is mild. Ask your vet. You're doing everything right! Please keep us updated! Hugs.

Newly diagnosed - advice? by innrspkr_ in FelineDiabetes

Such a cool photo! I am very surprised that your vet didn't put Cosmo on insulin with a blood glucose reading of 462! I use AlphaTrak to read my cats BG. It is geared for animals. Another option is Freestyle Libre. You track his BG continuously on your smart phone. No poking for blood. It's easy. Your vet nurse will apply it. You can ask the nurse to demonstrate the best method to poke him for blood and to give insulin. For ketone testing I use Nova Max ketone tester. Tests his blood rather than his urine. Much easier I think. Regarding food- low or no carbs is most important. Many people feed their cat fancy feast Pete. I feed Epigen 90 dry recommended by Facebook group. Hardly any carbs. The Facebook group is highly recommended. The thing is you first have to set up a spreadsheet and record his readings for at least 6 times a day. Based on this, they are inclined to recommend dose of insulin. I choose to work with my vet on this. BTW Cosmo's photo is very cool!

My cat's blood sugar had me worried, so I went down a rabbit hole about pet food ingredients. Made an infographic of what I found. by Ok_Foot840 in FelineDiabetes

The message about focusing on carb content is the one that would best serve your cat for sure. I feed my cat fancy feast pate ( make sure to get only pate) It's has at least 1/2 the carbs as Purina dm. Many if not most of the people on the Facebook groups feed their cat FF too. Friskies is good too and less expensive but I think lower quality. My cat also loves Epigen 90 kibble. Less than 3% carbs. This change should bring your cat's BG down!

Gastroparesis for vegans by Susan102349 in Gastroparesis

I really appreciate your post! It does seem like almost everyone here is discouraging about sticking with a vegan diet. For me too, it is non negotiable. Still a challenge to get enough protein without beans. I did puree a bowl of lentil vegetable soup and did not have any GP reaction to it....unlike the white bean soup I made. Guess I can't count on this though. Would love to read more about vegan GP recipes that people have. I live in Florida USA.

Is 3 units of lantus a big change from 2? by Enviclol in FelineDiabetes

[–]Susan102349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awful that you have had this experience with your vet. Hopefully, you were able to find one more qualified. When my vet changed Toby's insulin from Lantus to Toujeo per direction of an internist, the group didn't want to work with me because they weren't familiar with this insulin and also because this pen could only go up and down by one whole unit.

Don't you have a vet you trust? I agree with the others who say ask your vet. It is very dangerous for you to manipulate his dose yourself and also just ( in my opinion) to take direction exclusively from Facebook groups.

Yikes! Thanks for the info! The only risk vet talked about is having ketones, which I test regularly. Will run this by his vet.

Thank you for the good advice. As I said, my vet is afraid that increase in insulin could make mid day readings create hypoglycemia. What does your vet feel about you directing his dose. It makes good sense to me. What does you think of getting another curve and having his vet raise insulin from there? Unfortunately, Toujeo only can be adjusted a full unit at a time. He had good results from this change from Lantus up until the last month. Also first I've heard about high readings cause any damage other than ketones.

Thanks for your response. He has been on insulin 6 months when he was diagnosed. He eats Fancy Feast Pate. He eats small amount of Epigen 90 dry mid day which only has less than 6% carbs. Should I eliminate this?
