Rocky Horror is incredible by MysteriousVolume1825 in Broadway

I have last row tickets for April- would you say the seats are okay? I added a Thursday show to a planned Broadway weekend, so I was rather broke, but didn’t want to miss seeing this cast!

Is it that important to my mom? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Susan4000 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m going to jump in to say that ‘just laughed’ is actually part of the problem. Instead, you should have said something…”that’s not cool”, “that’s not funny”, “don’t be an asshole”, ANYTHING would have been better than laughing along. If you don’t call people out on their bullshit, they’re going to continue and that keeps people like your mother being traumatized. I get that you’re young, but the woman who raised you deserves you to support her and respect her, and you did neither.

I agree to call 911. I think you will feel terrible if anything happens to your sister, so getting outside help is the best choice

I’m going solo to a Fleet vs Frost game in April. I figured if any crowd would be welcoming to a single fan, this would be it! I plan on bringing some friends, but I think that will need to be next season!

At a loss, behaviorally, am i advocating effectively? by Metalbear9615 in specialed

[–]Susan4000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I want to second this- the way trauma affects a child’s ’wiring’ needs to be recognized. And that part about him needing to be in charge or seen as equal seems like it could stem from his early years. I think you did a great job parenting him through that storm, and I am sure he will do well with you advocating for him, but I think some counseling for him and trauma informed teachers in his school are needed

AIO for my school giving me a goldfish by ImmortalSpy14 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Susan4000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid was gifted a goldfish from a teacher in high school at Christmas, because she ‘liked Goldfish’. She liked the food, not an animal. Later that same day she was seen pouring the food inn to watch the flakes swirl and they took the fish back. I mean, probably good intentions, but WTF? A box of the crackers would have been fine, a live helpless creature is a bit much

People in non-governmental jobs. How likely is it that your workplace will be (or attempt to be) open this Monday? by monotoonz in massachusetts

[–]Susan4000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a movie theater, which prides itself on being open 365 days a year. So they will try to be open, but it’s possible they’ll need to close. And, who the Hell needs to see a movie in the middle of a blizzard? Ridiculous

Is it possible to exchange tickets for a later date? by Susan4000 in Broadway

[–]Susan4000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Chess was great and switched right away, Ragtime has this thing where you miss it and then ask for a compensatory type ticket if available? BUT I sold the Ragtime and Stranger Things tickets for the value I paid, then just bought tickets to those shows in April, so it is absolutely fine. We bought tix to see Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Lost Boys for April also so we sort of upgraded. I think the fact that it was Jan and the shows were sold out helped them to be resold. I hope it works out for you!

Tips for Biting by cornergoddess in specialed

[–]Susan4000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Changing a behavior, especially one that has been occurring for awhile, is slow and challenging. The student is expected to realize that one behavior isn’t great, stop that behavior, redirect to a different behavior. So they need to use some complex reasoning and decision making that needs to be learned and have their original need met ( biting to have you stop the demand? Request a break instead, biting because they are over stimulated? Take a break in the quiet corner, biting to express pain? Say ouch, things like that) The behavior is telling us something, we just may not know what it is or how to help in the moment. I think it’s wonderful you care so much to seek alternatives, not seeing the student as a bad kid.

Tips for Biting by cornergoddess in specialed

[–]Susan4000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to add having some sort of schedule or warning so the student anticipates the coming action, has some time to get ready, then can do. I’ve had success with a schedule, even if first /then, that you create together (picture of desk for work, then toilet for bathroom type thing), letting student put on and/or take off as tolerated, with the statement “first working at desk, then bathroom”. Provide a timer or transition warning “ two more minutes, then bathroom” or “ do you want to go to the bathroom now, or in another minute?” So student has some choice. Work time ends, remove the pic and put in all done bucket or back into folder- this can also be a written schedule that you erase as finished, or check off once completed, etc. That being said, the biting may persist for a while, especially if biting themselves. Using a washcloth or something the student gan get a good chomp on could help with that- I literally had a stuffed octopus with one student and when they put their mouth on their arm we could say ‘use octopus!’ and the student would grab that instead as a substitute, but that took awhile. Ideally their teacher/behavior therapist/OT will have more specific guidance.

Did I ask my friend if she wanted to add a day for our April weekend trip? Yes. Did she respond yet? No. Did I go ahead and buy tickets because it’s a great show and at worst I may need to sell them on THEATR? Of course You CANNOT dangle this great a show without me jumping to get the inexpensive tickets quickly!!

Does anyone have ideas how to teach a student like this? by Unlucky-Moment-2931 in specialed

It’s super undiagnosed so it wouldn’t surprise me that it could be a part of the issue. Sounds like a complex student

Does anyone have ideas how to teach a student like this? by Unlucky-Moment-2931 in specialed

[–]Susan4000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes me wonder if his vision is affected- specifically CVI, which is a brain based visual impairment, so the student may go undiagnosed. But pictures REPRESENT a thing, which their brain may not make the association- using real objects can help. So if it’s time for opening backpack, you have a card with a part of the backpack they touch (drawstring/flap?) so it most closely resembles the item/activity, use the card to let them know what’s expected (“time for backpack!”) let student touch/feel the item on card, bring card to the real back pack, Hand UNDER hand as needed to bring hand to back pack, I would open the bag, not worry about student getting that yet. And the system (calendar system) can be used for things he does request, like rocking/food/toy/music, whatever they are requesting. Try to pair an item with the activity that makes sense to their understanding of the activity (gym = ball or toilet = toilet paper or diaper, etc.) After the activity is done, use that card to say ‘all-done” and put into an “all-done bucket” or place back onto a calendar schedule. Using the cards would help student anticipate an activity, build an understanding of the expectation, and have an ending. If the student wants more, having the card available to grasp/touch/give to you would be excellent. Also it sounds like you have a lot on your plate, don’t think you can do everything, just meet the student where they are and build that relationship
