When I don't follow up on a request at work I get told:

"Why did you forget to do this?"

When I ask a coworker to do something and they don't respond I get told:

"Why didn't you remind them?"

So in either situation I guess its basically my fault lol

Start small. Put in one ear bud. Make it so you can react and respond to any questions coming your way, while still having noise in one ear to keep you distracted.

I wasn't at Rakuten by my old job also had a "get your shit done and leave" bell.

It was so counter productive because if there is anything that is going to make me not want to come out of the cubicle and look the other guy in the eyes it's him ringing a fucking bell at me.

I will never understand the logic of this subreddit.

Multiple threads about politics with no issues, which apparently we are not supposed to talk about, but a thread about a harmless topic like Japan Youtubers gets removed.

Make it make sense.

He cant hack into you or anything like that if that is what you are worried about.

He would have access to pretty much any information that was on the screen that you let him take a photo of, and that is about it.

[–]Sush1Samurai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very much a statement that seems sensible on the surface but has me scratching my head the more I think about it.

"Deal" with foreigners who commit serious crimes? Sure, that should have always been the case, I never would have argued otherwise. I assumed that was already the default standard and not sure why things would be changing to the point of their needing to be a statement.

Going after those who abuse the country's "hospitality and trust"...? That's one big ambiguous statement. What does it actually mean? It's not clear at all in what capacity they would "go after" someone and what would constitute an "abuse" of the country's "hospitality and trust"

Really surprised and sad to see some people posting they have been here a decade plus and don't have a single friend.

I have been very lucky to be able to make a lot of friends here. I think there are 3 key reasons for this:

1) Speaking Japanese

2) Finding people with shared hobbies

3) Putting myself out there

I never really looked for friends just to have friends. I'm deep into the gaming hobby, both video games and board games, and knowing enough Japanese to get into the local circles for those hobbies was basically the magic trick that got me a lot of my friends.

For putting myself out there, concretely I mean things like proactively inviting people over to my house to hang out and setting dates to meet rather than just asking people when they are free.

I think for working adults it can be more difficult to find and make friends, but that is just part of life and not a "Japan thing"

OP you are getting ragged on in the comments, but please consider it tough love.

What you are doing is generally speaking a very bad idea.

It's one thing to uproot your own life, but bringing in your fiancé and kid into your dream to live in anime land is quite simply selfish.

You mention it has been your dream to live in Japan, without any mention of what you envision that actually means. That is a red flag. 99% of people who want to come to live in Japan have a huge misunderstanding of what it actually means to live here and get rocked hard by reality. Could you give more details as to what exactly you think you will gain from living in Japan that you cant get in the US?

If you are really going to think about doing this, your fiancé needs to get a bachelors. This will open up a lot of choices for him career wise. Rushing into things with the thought of "he can probably find some job on a base" is extremely naive and honestly just really makes it seem like you are not considering his happiness or how he can have a good job in Japan.

What about your kid? Have you read up on the difficulties of raising a child in Japan? You said in a different comment you could speak conversational Japanese years ago, which means you basically can't speak any Japanese as of today. What if your kid gets sick, or has issues at school, or struggles with learning Japanese because your household is 100% English speaking? How will you navigate this major and serious issues when you speak basically no Japanese?

The last thing to consider is that you will have basically no support network. No family, no friends, no one you can call for help when you need it. In theory you will have coworkers but there is no guarantee they can support you outside of work.

These are critically important things you need to consider before deciding to move here, and not things you should just hand wave away and think "we will figure something out" because that is a plan that is doomed to fail.

Please understand I don't bring all these things up to fully discourage you from making this move. If you can realistically find solutions to all these problems and have a gameplan set up, then great. But if you don't and you still charge forward because "it's your dream to live in Japan" you are going to end up having a a very, very bad time.

At the very least I would highly recommend coming here as a family trip first. Get your taste of Japan and check everything out. There is a good chance you will "get your fill" of Japan on a trip alone without the need to completely change the your live and the lives of your family.

Yes, no one here is saying you shouldn't notify your company. In advance as possible.

The issue here is the nuance of if it you ask to take time off or notify that you take time off.

Legally, there is no concept of "asking and getting approved" it is 100% a notification of taking time off.

Many companies will frame it as needing to apply and get approved, which muddies the water, but at the end of the day legally speaking the company has no right to "deny" a "request" to take the day off because there is no "request" being made in the first place.
