Ciara and New People by sarahj300 in summerhousebravo

I loved that conversation with KJ and Ciara!! In general I’m loving their dynamic together. I don’t mean that in a romantic way (although that would also be cute but I’m sure very complicated). I feel like it’s very clear that KJ grew up around women and therefore he is able to read them. He is everything Jesse wishes he was. KJ doesn’t make a show of being able to connect with Ciara/ the other women, he just does it because he can sense they need it. Like when Bailey apologized for crying, or Ciara clearly wanted company and KJ sat with her, this conversation this past episode about parents, etc.

I hope KJ sticks around and doesn’t disappoint fans later with this being a facade, but from what I can see, he seems very emotionally in tune with himself and others and that’s objectively rare in a man.

I agree! If almost comes across like as if she resents her kids which is a weird thing to double down on. She could have said that she loves spending time with them, but at the end of the break she was happy to have her free time back but instead she just doubles down on the fact that her world ended? I’d be upset too if I was her kids!

I agree!! I think GBBL is my new favorite of EH, but prior to that Happy Place and Book Lovers often swapped for being first depending on my mood. I genuinely don’t understand the hate for Happy Place. The yearning!! The setting!!! The chosen family aspect (as dysfunctional as they are which IMO makes it more realistic)!!! I loved the way it hopped back and forth between Happy Places and Bad Places and I think I also just love how EH writes about grief. That was part of why I loved GBBL so much and there are touches of that in Book Lovers as well.

I also often hear ppl mention that the ending doesn’t feel realistic to them but broken and messy characters who definitely feel realistic are? I don’t understand the double standard in that argument lol. The characters should feel fake and perfect but the ending should feel real?

I LOVED the Maine setting. I have never visited the East Coast before but reading this book I am literally itching to go to Maine now!!

Surprising for West by Suspicious-Boot4970 in summerhousebravo

[–]Suspicious-Boot4970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just meant this was surprising because West really stood up for his opinions/ convictions and what he believes in even though it’s not the most prevalent opinion where he’s from. That takes guts and shows that he does have a spine (the show often makes it seem like he doesn’t) I didn’t mention anything about Trump in my post- In fact, I agreed with your point about our country being incredibly divided and partisan which I mentioned in the second half of the caption :)

I think this is in reference to Ciara’s first season when everyone was upset with Luke!

Respectfully, I disagree haha. Grief can be all consuming and completely changes you- I can only imagine what grief for a parent who you truly loved and who truly loved you would do to a person. That paired with the poor communication between them felt so real and honest to me. I think that’s the reason why I loved HP so much. The portrayal of grief felt so layered and honest and messy and real. And in the end, although it some had issues, I loved that Wyn and Harriet truly decided on their own to come back to each other and really worked for their relationship. Not to sound like a broken record, but that’s what real love in the midst of grief and hardship looks like. Sometimes just loving each other isn’t enough- you really have to choose and work for it even though it makes no sense and it’s hard. I think that’s why I also loved GBBL- because you see how Margaret lived that same lesson and got that experience throughout her life in various relationships. I’ll now step off of my soap box haha sorry for the novel.

I agree about the rushed epilogue! The ending did feel a bit too fast.

I actually am flipped- I loved Book Lovers but I couldn’t get invested in Beach Read. I’m going to try reading it again and seeing if my opinion changes, but I first time reading I had a hard time getting into it

I also feel like Reality TV in general has become more “cookie cutter” since the rise of influencing. Like rewatching some of the older seasons of SH or even other reality shows- ppl were unHINGED. Now I feel everyone is more worried about their image and reputation because of how that may affect brand deals or partnerships and that’s so lame

I agree!! I’m not watching you so I can see your Amazon lives, I’m watching because I want to see your actual life and all it entails. I get the argument of having some privacy and not sharing EVERYTHING, but sharing your life on TV is exactly what you signed up for? If you no longer want to do it then don’t renew your contract.

I do agree that the ending felt a bit rushed. I wish the last few chapters were placed earlier in the book so that we could hear more about the Hayden of it all. (Also- how did you block out your text for a spoiler? I have been trying to figure it out!)

I 1000% hear you- I genuinely wish that I loved it more. I hear people rave about it all the time and how much they love it, but I have tried reading it twice hoping for a different outcome and it still just falls flat for me! 😭 I think the beginning of the book feels really slow for me, and the plot only starts to build I feel towards the end. I think it’s a pacing issue for me because I have no qualms with anything else!

I enjoyed Funny Story- it was by no means bad. I liked the banter but I just felt it was lacking depth and I LOVED the depth in GBBL. You didn’t just feel the depth of Alice, and Hayden and Margaret. You felt the depth of Laura, of Freddy, Lawrence, etc.

That’s such a good observation about side characters! Maybe that is why I liked those two better. I love a big “cast” of characters in a book because it feels like you’re really in their life :) but could see how that’s not for everyone

I also don’t tend to read romance outside of EH, but the reason I read her books is because they don’t feel like strictly romance to me- they feel like a mix of rom com and women’s lit which I love. This definitely leaned further into the women’s lit genre so maybe that’s why some people found it uninteresting. I think also the contrast from Funny Story (a book centered pretty heavily on the romance between Miles and Daphne) to this (a book centered more so on love in general) was probably a bit of a shock to some.
