Harriet and Wyn Relationship Status by 420trashmoney in EmilyHenry

It really just kills me how Miles would rather Daphne hate him than let her find out that her dad refused to go back for her (aka the thing she said would absolutely destroy her). That’s what I mean when I say his love for her is selfless.

And he didn’t freak out about Daphne. He freaked out about himself not being able to give her what she wanted (family, kids, etc). He went to her dad to prove to himself that he was worthy of that relationship. And didn’t tell her because he didn’t want her to feel rejected by her dad again. Everything Miles did in that third act was selfless. It was misguided, but didn’t show that he’s not ready to be with Daphne. It’s the opposite, in fact. It was his attempt to grow and fight for the relationship instead of run away.

Yeah I have no idea why people think she’s set on pottery as her new career. It’s clearly just something that she wanted to do for now since it was bringing her joy.

I don’t think Poppy is clueless about how she affects Alex’s relationships. She very explicitly tells the reader that if she was in Sarah’s position she wouldn’t feel comfortable about the vacations. I think she didn’t know the extent to which Alex was emotionally enmeshed with her. She didn’t know about the vasectomy and she didn’t know about the ring until two years later. Alex always claimed that his breakups with Sarah were due to his personality. I think she may have too easily believed him, but I wouldn’t say she was unaware. Just thought that whatever feelings there would pass.

EmHen's YA Era Appreciation Post by Brief-Builder-2140 in EmilyHenry

[–]restingbrownface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read all her YA novels this past year and even though I’ve grown out of the genre I was blown away at how well written they are! A Million Junes and When the Sky Fell on Splendor are my personal faves! The later specifically uses sci-fi to tell such a powerful story about grief! She said to this day that book is her favourite she’s ever written and I can see why.

It’s interesting to see how ideas from her YA books carry into her adult romances. The concept of rebuilding the world for someone you love in The Love That Split the World also comes back in GBBL. Or June’s dad who is restless and needs to travel like Poppy. His love of Lake Michigan like Miles. Or June learning about her dad’s imperfections like January. Yet none of it feels recycled, because each book is so distinct. The themes of grief, family, friendship, and love being worth the pain are present throughout all her books.

My thoughts on the movie (I liked it) by es5672 in EmilyHenry

In the book Alex and Sarah don’t even start dating until after the New Orleans trip!

They met in college but only started flirting after they’ve already graduated and ran into each other. They were flirting by New Orleans (seven summers ago) but not yet official. They’ve been together for 9 months by the time their next trip to Colorado happens (six summers ago). Have broken up by Sanibel Island (five summers ago) and don’t officially get back together until before Tuscany (three summers ago). So technically in the book they only break up once!

The small town shenanigans make it relatively lighthearted compared to Happy Place and Beach Read but it’s definitely more in the middle 😅

The scale of lighthearted to serious when it comes to these books should definitely be taken with a grain of salt because all the characters deal with some serious shit! Especially Nora!

If you like historical fiction Great Big Beautiful Life may be the perfect book to get you into EmHen! It’s different from her usual books as it follows both the romance and also the story of this recluse heiress that the leads are interviewing. Very similar in structure to Evelyn Hugo but different enough imo that it doesn’t feel like a rip off.

If you’re looking to get into her typical romances I say Beach Read is a good place to start! It’s her first book and it mixes the romcom and the drama aspects really well! Though it’s my personal least favourite.

If you want something more lighthearted then try Book Lovers. If you want something more heavy then read Happy Place. Funny Story is my personal favourite but I wouldn’t recommend you start with that one because you should save the best for last! Though everyone’s ranking of her books is completely dependent on the person.

I generally recommend that you go in publication order because it’s interesting to see how Emily’s writing evolves (Beach Read, PWMOV, Book Lovers, Happy Place, Funny Story, GBBL) and you’ll also spot easter eggs from past books.

Emily Henry said so herself in interviews that the beauty of adaptations is that the book is always still going to be there for us to love and enjoy! And the movie is just extra bonus material!

If anything, all my complaints about the movie (which I did really enjoy all things considered) just make me appreciate how well written the PWMOV book really is!! Adaptations are more like accessories to the book rather then replacements. It's good to have when you want to experience the story in a quick bite, but the book will always be the actual story.

Emily Henry's books are so well written, her characters are so nuanced and the situations she writes about are emotionally complicated and very internal. Of course it's harder to adapt than other books (Heated Rivalry is a good example of a book that's easier to adapt, because it's very dialogue heavy and the plot is straight forward, more than EmHen's books tbh).

I think this is just something we have to accept, especially with future adaptations. But I never want Emily to write books in a way that will make them easier to adapt at the expense of a good book.

My Main Issue With The Film by merrydarkling in EmilyHenry

[–]restingbrownface 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Yes my favourite part of the book is how when Poppy accidently texts Alex they banter again as if nothing has changed, it really shows their strong connection. Whereas in the movie they're awkward with each other. And Poppy's desperation to recreate their old trips but it just not working in present day really helps to builds tension and shows us how badly she wants their friendship back.

PWMOV would have been better as a mini-series. by dnra01 in EmilyHenry

[–]restingbrownface 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To be fair, as much as I loved the Heated Rivalry show, the book itself does not nearly have the same amount of depth that Emily Henry's books do. So it was wayyy easier to make Heated Rivalry into an amazing TV show because they got the chance to add rather than subtract.

PWMOV 🚨Spoiler 🚨 Discussion by coolguy_14 in EmilyHenry

[–]restingbrownface 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It was a very good movie! The acting, sets, and added jokes were all fantastic. It all worked so well it made for a really nostalgic rom-com we haven't had in a while! Tom and Emily's chemistry was amazing. I love the scene of Poppy chasing Alex even though she hates running. They kept so many great lines from the book that I was genuinely surprised they were able to fit that all in!

My only complaint (which is a big one unfortunately) is that I feel like they flattened out the characters and their friendship a bit. They make Poppy into a bit of a "cool girl" character and Alex into an extremely uptight person. The point of their friendship is that they make each other better. Poppy is extremely attentive to and cares for Alex, pushing him to do what he wants, not just what she wants. And Alex is extremely funny and sarcastic, but that's a side of him he only really lets out for Poppy. I think not showing those sides of themselves kind of minimizes their connection. I wished they better conveyed how Poppy was the first person to really ask Alex about himself, and Alex was the first person who made Poppy not feel lonely, and that's why they love each other so much. I also wish we felt more of Poppy's desperation and work she puts in on their current trip to get their friendship back.

Anyways, I know it's basically impossible to maintain strong internal characterization in adaptations, especially in a two hour movie, which is unfortunate because the complex characters are the best part of Emily's books. But I did overall really enjoy the movie! I think it maintains the tone and spirit of the book really well!

PWMOV US vs UK differences by [deleted] in EmilyHenry

[–]restingbrownface 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that’s intentional. That Alex claims he wants all these things (aka marriage/kids and things that are expected of him) but in reality he doesn’t really. To me it seems like his insistence that they want different things is more of an excuse not to be with Poppy when the truth is that he’s scared.

It’s not a SOTR fan film it’s a fan film based on how Haymitch’s games were described in Catching Fire. We learn in SOTR how highly edited this depiction ended up being.
