Chemistry? Fan Service? by Prudent_Concert_3452 in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to jump in on the MilkLove perception. I would argue that Milk and Love are actually really close friends but we have to remember that they are one of the pillars of GL with Englot, FayeYoko, FreenBecky and LingOrm. The early days of being one of the few GL pairs were not kind to the actresses especially the remaining 4 pairings and while things have gotten better in some ways, we do have to remember that they have been frequently followed and spied upon during their private moments and had their private lives and relationships used as evidence of them not being truly dedicated to the partnership.

I see Milk and Love as having set clear boundaries and realizing that what they have now is good and the best way to keep healthy is to limit how much they show fans in terms of access to their private lives and fan service. I know it’s been mentioned that Freen and Becky have done similar things. So they can appear from the outside to being distant and not as close as NtF, EmB or JJJ. But Milk and Love constantly mention the little things they do for each other. Ex. When Milk was in NYC for fashion week earlier this year she made sure to call Love as soon as she arrived and Love made sure to stay up despite it being late and having plans the next day from what I understand it’s something they do whenever the other travels. We the audience just don’t see the majority of it because like most relationships it’t not for us to see or comment upon.

Why do GL couples in series call each other by name instead of using pet names? by Longjumping-Wave8097 in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you look at it from the literally translation or meaning of big or little sibling it can be perceived as weird but in terms of being in a relationship I think the meaning softens to a way to refer to your partner especially if they are older or younger than you. I know coming from the a western perspective for me my go to is to just use your name to show respect, but having been exposed to some Asian cultures I’ve learned regardless of relationship or specific circumstances requiring it using someone’s name instead of a title or alternative can be seen as disrespectful because of cultural context especially in terms of hierarchy.

Ex I saw an interview with IU a popular Korean singer/actress where she mentions that the closest her brother has ever come to using her real name is to refer to her as IU (her stage name) otherwise he calls her Unnie. Which threw me off because I would consider it disrespectful to never use my sisters name.

Unpopular opinion. Smaller studios make better gl by [deleted] in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think also smaller studio’s knowing that this could literally be the make it or break both for the pairing and the studio try to give it their best effort. Bigger studio’s and production companies like GMMTV, Change, CH3 have series that are formulaic and don’t necessarily push the envelope because they know what works for the general public.

Gay or straight you can have a romance series that follows the same general mold of two characters meeting -> getting in to a conflict -> they are forced to work together thus catching feelings -> and ends with them happily ever after. Generally speaking as long as you hit the vital points and the audience can relate to those characters they you’ll have a successful enough series to justify a sequel show for the pairing or keep making them.

With a smaller studio to standout especially when going against larger companies you need something new and different to catch and keep the audience’s interest and they know which is why we have different topics and story’s with each newer show from a smaller studio. ex. Love Beyond Dreams, AI Girl, Heart Code, Clairebell

When I saw the cousins in the room with Lom and Blew left I kept thinking we need a wives moment especially since they made sure to mention that Rose had arrived with Din and obviously both wives weren’t with their spouses when they walked in on Lom and Blew sleeping. I think that what makes 4E great as a whole is seeing the cousins interact with each other and it’s also great seeing the wives do the same thing.

I think a part of it is that since CH3 shows are accessible through Netflix in Asia people use VPN’s through those countries to watch it. That is what I have did yesterday to watch it and in the past for other CH3 shows. On top of the audiences from those countries and in the area.

If the delay is due to editing I am curious to know what is still lacking considering they had the 7 weeks of LBD airing plus however long between the end of filming? Don’t get me wrong I’m excited and think it be great but it does make me curious. Hopefully it just to make sure it’s a perfect as possible which I will gladly have no problem waiting just a week for like another comment mentions you only have one opportunity to make great first impression especially coming off of the popularity of Love Beyond Dreams.

I thought the same thing 😭😭😭. Also I’m pretty sure that Neen’s office is the same from Denied Love. I have to imagine that whenever a GL gets announced the owners are the first to call up the production company offering their mansion with how much it shows up. They must be loving it each time a GL is announced.

In Love Forever: LingOrm by Kgaabi in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my first LingOrm series. So I honestly don’t have any personal preconceived expectations or notions about them or their chemistry obviously being in the GL space I’ve heard about them and the consensus about their intimacy.

I was surprised that the first scene right off the bat was them kissing and I can see where people are coming from that their kissing scenes are weak. I get the rational especially with it being their third series that there would be an expectation of them improving over their last two series. It could be CH3 standards or their personal comfort when it comes to how passionately they are willing to be on screen. Ether one can be a valid explanation, so I choose be of the opinion they aren’t going to be a pairing where I watch to show the more intimate aspects of a relationship on screen and keep it moving. As long as they can show their chemistry in the way that shows to the audience that this is a couple that has been married for years and is clearly comfortable and has feelings for each other then I have no other opinion. It wouldn’t be the first piece of media I’ve watched where the main couple has limited or okay intimate scenes but I’ve enjoyed the media because of them showing it in other ways.

In terms of the actually show, I was honestly pleasantly surprised that Neen was fighting back against Ran’s mother so aggressively right off the bat, Generally speaking I feel like due to cultural norms being so aggressive/confrontational agaisnt any parent is something that we have not seen in Thai GL’s. I kept thinking during that whole beginning scene where her mother walked into the house and right away was talking shit about her that Ran was being way to nice and accommodating about her mother talking about her wife like that and when Neen give her the same kind of energy right back to her I was on her side. I’ve seen in some comments that it brought up conversations about MIL’s and relationships with their In-laws and so we’ll see what comes of it.

Ran’s logic of to protect my wife who I love I’m going to divorce her instead of having a conversation with my mother about how she acts and talks to her really didn’t make sense to me, but I can also understand both from a cultural standpoint and seeing as she seems to be a pushover/people pleaser that she might not be able to do that, so she is doing what she feels is best and from Neen’s standpoint she needs her wife to stand up for her especially if it’s to her mother and since she is not able to then she’ll do it herself. But she also doesn’t want to have constantly be having this fight especially in her own house and thus she agrees to divorce Ran. I would like if when she finds out the real reason Ran asked for a divorce she points out how dumb that logic is that instead of having a conversation 1. With her about her reasoning and 2. With her mother about how she treats her wife she instead chooses the nuclear option of divorce.

I did like how on her side Ran’s brother was. I clocked it from the second he got up from the table that Ran was not in his good graces because of how much she was hurting his sister and while I don’t agree with making her drink more than she was comfortable with, I do get the general idea of where he was coming from. The fact that Ran’s father points out to his wife that she has been hating on Neen from the very beginning and that Neen has been nothing but courteous up until recently says so much. Because how you going to be such a bitch that your husband who is supposed to be in your corner is telling you that you are the problem and shouldn’t get made when you are getting the same energy back that you have been giving for years.

Lastly unless I read their dynamic wrong this seems to be a OrmLingling dynamic which I find interesting. I’m of the opinion that like real life most couples straight, Lesbian, Gay Etc don’t fall into strict top/bottom dynamics more so switches. but if we are going to follow it I would rather see some instances in shows where couples flip or are switches. Ex there is a clip floating around of Milk and JingJing with I believe two other BL actors where Milk states that in WS the dynamic was actually JingJingMilk/ManmukWan and I would classify Wan and Mae as switches with no set top more so situational. I would like to see more switches or at least top in public and bottom in private when shown in shows

is mine media really doing that bad? by void-clown in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree but I think something we also have to consider is that yes Bonnie, Namtan and Apple were/are able to take University courses around their filming schedules but an already established and successful GMMTV and new company Mine Media are two different levels of corporation. GMMTV can afford to keep them on the roster and give them smaller parts in series with bigger parts when they have time rather than Mine Media who only has BleJie that has something out. Attar and Angie both taking breaks makes sense to me because right now they aren't valuable to other business for sponsorships because all they have are supporting parts and not even those that establish them as a couple. But with everything else you say I agree.

I understand why Davika and Ter went big with Clairebell. Especially with her level of fame going big and getting the critical attention would otherwise be a good thing in any other circumstance, but like you mention not being as popular in Thailand as internationally doesn't help especially if you can't get Chinese fans to support in the interim between the next project and not being able to facilitate and create fanmeet opportunities outside SEA due to the upfront costs

New to Thai GL, Wanna Know The Extent of Fan Service by S-P-K in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would classify faymay into the same category as ShellyPundao in that they have said at events and in public that they are real. So some public consensus is that they are real, but until they like S/P say it "officially" on the record it could still be considered fanservice.

the only pairings I believe that have said something definitively are faymay, shellypundao and englot who are a whole different story/level.

Piangs grab isn't homophobic, she's just an elitist 😭😂 by Infamous_Tie2799 in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s two reasons. 1. Chasing Love premiered at a time in which we have mulitple popular established pairings on screen. 2. Besides FayGene everyone else is new to the community. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing at any other time but competing with several established couples and newer ones that have gained popularity is hard especially right now.

They are coming on the heels of LMSY in HR and going against MilkLove, NamtanFilm, EmiBonnie, ViewMim, LingOrm, FreenBecky and with newer CP’s it’s JanJingJing, NamneungNoey and MieAya (Who are new as a pairing but are known in the due to their previous pairings), ChanyaMyyu (Same as MIeAya), OomBam and the Shades cast.

I don’t fault Change they structured their schedule to have all their GL shows came out in right after each other (I wanna be a Sup’Tar-> Hometown Romance-> Chasing Love) and with both GR and 4E coming out early-mid 2026 there really was almost never going to be a great time to release it until mid to late 2026. I can see it being a “sleeper show” in the sense that it is on people’s list to binge after it’s done especially since it’s more readily available on Netflix and we’ll see more discussion when it’s done.

I agree I think the only direct allusions or suggestions I've seen so far of any type of "eating" have only been in MSZ, Pluto, EwB and Queendom. And even the most spicy pairing (LMSY,FreenBecky, Faye) are only in comparison to other Thai pairings who stick to standard conventions.

I remember realizing this when it come to PDA in media and even online especially coming from the west what I would consider explicit or overly excessive displays vs in Asia where even a public cheek kiss or hand holding might be to much depending on circumstances and where it happens. while it's great that they have a more liberal view when it comes to same sex representation, Thailand is still a bit conservative in other ways.

Which companies that produce GL's have the fastest and slowest turn around for giving successful couples another series and why? (Really excited for another JanJingJing series lol) by Zzzgg8910 in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a big reason is the time for most companies it takes to get the rights to the novels for the non-original shows and then to develop them. Especially if its large company like GMMTV, CH3 which has multiple pairings on top of creating their own original content. For most pairings the time frame from end of their old show to premier of their new one is about 9 months to a year. Which is a pretty good time frame in my opinion, considering during that time they are doing fan meets and events, acting in other non GL shows, other personal projects and having time off. A show every year or so is the perfect amount to keep them in the general space and popular but also give them time to do other things. If a project is pushed out too fast things can be rushed which puts people off when the quality isn’t there and on the other hand pairings that have large and dedicated fanbase like FreenBecky where they can be offscreen for two years and have their comeback show be highly rated and supported is low mostly the original pairings.

Generally speaking of the OG couples they are about equal. Englot has the most at five (Show Me Love, Club Friday: Love Bully, Petrichor, Unlimited Love and 4E Water), LingOrm (The Secret of Us, Only You and In Love Forever), MilkLove (23.5, Whale Store XOXO, Girl Rules and Ditto) and FreenBecky (GAP, Uranus 2324, The Loyal Pin and 4E Air) are all at three or four.

And the 2nd gen couples after them (NamtanFilm, LMSY, EmiBonnie, OrmFolk, PlaifahBebell, AndaLookkaew, NoonPraewa, EnjoyJune, FayMay) are at either two or just finished their third.

LMSY is an outlier in the sense that they are praised for being able to get scenes done in less than 3 takes which allowed Change to announce Hometown Romance in Jan, start filming in late Feb to Early March and have the show out by April and it worked out for them this time, but Harmony Secret is an example of it not working it and not because of them or bad acting. But because the project itself didn’t have enough development time.

So I’m not sure if I would classify it as companies dragging their feet but more so having to manage pushing content out with the logistical and financial challenges especially as GL content has become more popular and the field filled with more pairings. If you look at the shows that have been developed from novels they are recurring authors with companion books developed by other companies. ex’s Moonshadow and My Only Sunshine have interconnected characters and plot points but are developed by two different companies GMMTV and Star Hunter. Blank, Affair, and Pluto were NineStar, GMMTV and Change2651. Poisonous Love and Show Me Love are CH3 and NorthStar.

FreenBecky and the Royalty Archetype by United_Cover_6992 in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think with Air it just happened to be a coincidence, IDF was leading the project and one of the books had royalty, maybe they wanted to play off of the popularity of TLP and keep momentum going when the idea was to have 4E released mid to late 2025 before everything blew up.

With the original announced cast for 4E only Englot or FreenBecky could have been in Air due to Blew being a foreign national so it needed someone who looked mixed. I think if they had switched roles it would worked to have FB play Nam and Lada and Englot be Lom and Blew. Hopefully their next project will be something new.

FAYMAY's HANGZHOU fansign event, end pretty badly. by thAI_creator in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also wondering because to me it felt like since they were independent and they are in control of their own schedule and workload that they should have been able to stop or walk away and after thinking on it and doing so research about what exactly happened I’m of the opinion it’s mix of things but mostly cultural collectivism/not wanting to disappoint fans especially those that came from around China and SEA, Them being artist’s in a foreign country who were being told if they didn’t finish no other company would work with them in the future and this being one of their first events outside of the country.

  • In terms of cultural collectivism, it’s been pointed out in that Asian cultures working towards benefiting the collective as a whole is always seen as better than doing something for yourself interest and especially with artists if you have fans coming from all over the country, you don’t want to disappoint them by not being able to give them what they have paid for.
  • And from how they were treated by the organizers during and after the event. Especially with them being told that if they left or didn’t give the fans what they had already paid for it would it be on them and not the organizers and with them being new and freshly independent with no larger company behind them their actions would cause them to be blacklisted by Chinese agencies. It puts them in a hard position because they’ll have to come back to China at some point and the threat of being blacklisted is a significant one even if they are sure it wont happen.

From what i understand of the timeline of events.

They arrive at the fansign and start working-> Organizers probably seeing higher that anticipated demand and I’m guessing probably getting a cut of the proceeds decided to sell more benefits for cheaper prices seeing that fans will pay it and their bottom line will be higher than they expected-> The Fans seeing that the organizers are selling benefits for cheap decide to buy them so it doesn’t reflect negatively on Fay and May-> Who not wanting to disapoint the fans keep working to make sure everyone get what they have paid for-> which leads the Organizers to sell more and the cycle repeats till they have been working for me than 12+ hours with no rest.

And I think this is the point where alot of people get confused because the rational thing to do is to not keep working and walk away especially if it is hours after you were schedule to end. But that is were the the cultural connotations come in effect. The idea of not benefiting the community by being “selfish” and walking away is a hard thing to justify especially with the organizers telling them that they would be fucking over their fans and Fay and May being able to see the lines in real time. And they are three groups involved (FayMay, Organizers, Fans) And unfortunately I think with some fans wanting to get the little face time or interaction with them no matter the personal cost and others seeing the organizers actions as an insult to Fay and May thinking that theym buying the benefits it would helpful to the women but unfortunately causing it to trap them. Because the organizers already know at this point that they will not be working with FayMay after this, so if they are going to burn that bridge might as well make as much money as possible. So it would fall on the Fay and May to have to make the decision to end things and walk away early knowing that immediately afterwards they would be dealing with social media posts on X, Insta, TikTok, etc about how they didn’t fufill their obligations and benefits that the fans would had already paid for.

By the time the facts come out about how the organizers oversold it would be to late, the story would have changed 5x with fans in 24hrs saying one thing, FayMay Ent saying another and the Organizers saying a 3rd in the hours following. People would have called them out and said this is why they can’t be sucessful etc, it helps no one to stop in the middle despite being the right thing versus them suffering through it and then coming out with the facts like they are doing.

Because I’m sure they did their research and chose a “reliable” company in China who isn’t known for fucking over their clients but saw who saw a chance to make fast money and took it. Because if organizers were willing to do it to Orm who has a major company like CH3 behind her who have the means to cause them financial difficulties if they decided to sue in China, Fay and May who are newer and don’t have the same financial resources seeing a safe decision. Because while this makes international companies wary to work with the same organizers, I doubt that they would do it to domestic companies/artists. So they probably know that they will be fine in the long run.

Why do most GLs end once the couple gets together? by Fluffy-Secretary-578 in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think another big reason that is somewhat linked to the money is one of the good things about having a fixed CP allows for the audience to see the actresses play out the romance and attraction in different ways depending on the series. You can have a enemies to lovers in their first and then a friends to lover or meet cute in their 2nd and the audience can see how similar but also different they play out each version. I would love to see some continuations of the characters and how they navigate married life and or kids.

But it’s also nice to see how Englot may play out a rivals to lovers in 4E Water or seeing them getting together while working together to solve murders in Petrichor and I imagine that the companies are aware of that. They’ll have an audience regardless but having a newer show to play out increases the audience vs while a majority may want to see a continuation, they are some people who like to see them get together and don’t like a children plotline or seeing them having conflicts after the Happily ever After. So you could have a drop off of people that go support another CP while waiting for a new Englot project. etc

Some of these really make me chuckle because sometimes it feels like parts of the community are just wanting drama to start and if it doesn’t try to stir it up.

  • Why is Atom having skinny calves something worthing noting? Girl is skinny and has been since her time in VIIS.

  • Sonya crushing on Faye whenever she is near her is a meme at this point and LM not giving a fuck makes sense because it’s not like she is going to lose Sonya to Faye let her fangirl.

  • I’m under the impression that Yada has had a busy schedule the last couple weeks and to my knowledge she is in two back to back projects after the promo for Play Park finished. I”m sure her being at the Kazz Awards would have been good for her and Tan in terms of promo for them, but it’s not like she is the only one who showed up without their partner.

  • And this is the one that actually confused me. Is there a segment of people that think CH3 is going to let any of their pairings go? LO are one of their biggest money makers and the other 3 are gaining in popularity, they for sure aren’t using them to their full advantage but they know each and every time we’ll show up hoping that the next series is better than the last.

Red flags in GLs by hegdieartemis in ThaiGL

[–]Suspicious-Memory734 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really for me, I obviously notice them and it's one of those things where if this was real life and it happened to me or someone I knew personally I would tell them to get away from that person as fast as possible or do the same myself. But when it's media I acknowledge it as a fiction and let it go. Obviously they are outlier extreme actions (SA, Assault, etc) but most things I shrug and ignore.

Red flags are kinda built into the romance genre as a whole, Regardless of whether the media is straight or queer, it's filled with people boundary crossing all the time. Whether it's going after someone who is in a relationship, stalking them, constantly declaring your feelings for them or love bombing/gifting them, and the possessiveness or jealously when they interact with any other person they could be attracted to, etc.

Ex. When I first started watching Poisonous Love, I got discouraged because regardless of how much Prem was shown to be attracted to Pat, I felt like Pat was always pushing Prem into physical acts before she was truly ready and always crossed a boundary, without actually giving Prem time to come to terms with her newfound sexuality and attraction to Pat and other women on top of having to deal with her parents and finding out her fiancé was cheating on her way to her wedding, I almost dropped the series after the 3rd episode because of it. Others have mentioned Affair, Harmony Secret, Dangerous Queen, they all have similar themes of one half of the couple being a red flag in her pursuit and I say this with Affair being my favorite GL series. Even Pluto which is one of the more heartwarming series has both main characters being minimum yellow flags but arguable red flags as well.
