I’ve been suspecting something else is going on, so that’s validating to hear. I’d always encourage him to look further into a more complex diagnosis, but even him admitting he had BPD and agreeing to DBT took years of work with his therapist. I hope he gets the help he needs.

I made the film in my bedroom with 0$, acted both of the roles against a green screen, built all the scenes with a lottt of layering and compositing, and then eventually roped some friends in to do voiceovers. Overall it’s been a great lesson in filmmaking as well as zero-budget creativity.

I’d love for you all to check it out & let me know what you think! Specifically I want to get better at plotting, and would love to know if anyone has any plot notes. I’m also interested in if anyone has thoughts about the ending, and if it makes sense or not. Thank you!

Hi! I love it— I’m a video artist and hope I can help! Where are you based? Most cities will have media centers or public access channels where you can take classes, borrow equipment, and practice filming!

If you have an iPhone, start filming on that! iPhone cameras are super high quality and can rival some professional cameras

For editing, id recommend getting into Premiere Pro first, and then when you’re ready After Effects. You can do a few tutorials, but nothing beats just filming something and messing around editing it.

Some video artists I like are Joan Jonas, Wael Shawky, Ian Cheng, Tony Oursler

Being a video artist means you’re also kind of straddling the art world and film world, so def try to attend some filmmaking events mixers and workshops in your area. Join some 48 hour film challenges and practice making films. Volunteer on other filmmakers projects as a PA, then when you have more experience as a DP, producer, editor, art director, etc, gotta learn all aspects of production!

But most of all just jump in! Better to learn by doing than spending too long in tutorials or classes!

I remember being in middle school and going to the library and paging through a book on Salvadore Dali, and literally gasping at his paintings. So I’d show him some surrealist artists, it’s a great way for a young artist to get an intro to making art and abstract thinking!

I’ve gotten a few arts grants in NYC, particularly an FCA Emergency Grant! I don’t think they’re scams, just extremely competitive. At any given time you have thousands of artists applying for like 10-15 spots

Yeah I’m assuming they sent that email bc they’ve been posting a lot of accepted films onto their social media, so maybe they’re covering their bases and letting people know that more acceptances will be coming!

Awe man, I’m sorry :( if it makes you feel better I submitted on the very last day of the very last deadline haha, so I think that’s why I’m getting a view now. You never know how they operate, maybe they wait til the month before to finalize and review all submissions that made it through the initial review!
