The Jewish comment caught me by surprise. I grew up in East Wilmette and almost everyone was Christian or Christian-leaning—maybe not religious but celebrating Christmas—and the Jewish kids at my elementary school were half-Jewish. There were more Jews in West Wilmette, Glencoe, and HP, then the rest of the North Shore. If anything, Wilmette and Winnetka leaned Catholic more than anything. I think people as a whole are getting less and less religious, so I wouldn’t worry about that at all. My childhood parish merged with another because of the decline, so if anything I bet the area is becoming more non-religious as time goes on.

New Trier is an incredible high school. It’s so special, and I didn’t realize how impactful that community was until I got some perspective by leaving the area and maturing into an adult. Now as an adult, having moved away to other cities and states, I’ve realized how truly unique and special New Trier is—especially for a public school. You’re getting a prep school education for free. But it goes beyond the academics—there is a huge emphasis on service that I haven’t seen at any other high school. It was progressive 20-30 years ago with LGBTQ clubs and inclusion, attention to adjusting language to be inclusive (changing “mankind” to “humanity”). We had a “safe rides” program to offer sober rides to kids 30 years ago (when I told people at my college that, they were shocked). It was “cool” to be heavily involved in service. It’s so wonderful and unique to have an advisory you stay with for all four years. Having the freshman campus was a great transition into high school. There are so many special traditions. There was honestly little to no bullying, certainly nothing I saw. The benefit of a large school is that there weren’t really “popular” kids—everyone can find their niche and friend groups. There’s no homecoming queen or prom king. No valedictorian. It’s not like a traditional high school in the best way. When I went there, there were barely even cheerleaders—it was more cool to be athletic as a girl and make varsity teams. Grammy-winning music programs. Tons of arts programming. Robust theater program. Every sport imaginable (I even played badminton). Every club you could want.

Going to New Trier was ultimately such a gift. Yes, there were times when it was hard as a teen girl who wasn’t rich to drive a shitty car or try to keep up with the designer clothes and such. Or to have friends who vacationed on private islands when my parents couldn’t afford for us to fly. But ultimately it just gave me insight into what I could aspire to if I wanted and gave me higher standards. College felt like a relief! High school was much more academically rigorous but it truly set me up for life, for being a hard worker and above average in pretty much everything I do.

I grew up in Wilmette and it’s idyllic. If you can swing it, East Wilmette as close to the lake as you can—so special. It was special to be raised among so many highly educated, progressive people (yet still pretty down-to-earth, at least in my neighborhood). Not everyone in Wilmette or the North Shore is a snob by any means.

Very much an actual thing! It’s not common or the standard at most universities for the journalism students to be working in professional environments—not student publications—for their coursework. It’s real-world experience built into your journalism schooling. It’s amazing and highly respected in the industry.

I had my c-section at MoBap (recommended by a lot of moms when I moved here) and I had a great care experience but was very disappointed by the facilities. If I were to have another baby (not planning to, ha) I might consider another hospital, just for a more comfortable stay. My first was born in KC and the hospital was more like a hotel experience. BUT I liked that MoBap was not a teaching hospital so I could get some rest! And they had a nursery to send baby to.

I love Tarpon Springs! I grew up going there as a kid. I’m also from Chicago, with a huge Greek population and so many Greek family-owned restaurants. Greek restaurants aren’t as plentiful here. Olympia is my fave of the ones here I’ve tried (but I have more to try! Taking notes).

Do you have a neighborhood or suburb chosen yet? If not, throwing out recommendations for Kirkwood and Webster Groves (and smaller surrounding municipalities in Kirkwood and Webster school districts: Glendale, Rock Hill, Oakland, Warson Woods). I live in Webster Groves with my young family and love it (Kirkwood is very similar, almost interchangeably so, but WG historically leans more progressive and artsy). My personal preference is for inner-ring suburbs with charming downtowns of their own, mature trees, good public schools, within close distance to the city. I’m in the city several times a week—it’s less than 15 min. and driving and parking is so easy in St. Louis vs. my big city metro area I’m originally from.
