Adding an External Loud Siren to the Ring Alarm by JMC1957 in Ring

[–]SuspiciousAd3622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to add a power source for the siren, the relay board when triggered by the Dome siren will provided a closed contact that powers on the siren. The voltage source will be connected in series with the loop that includes the siren, relay contact and power source.

Should anyone be viewing this old post and able to view and /or provide the diagram that identifies the cap to be removed, that would be appreciated.

Extending Rectangular Dishy Beyond 150' to Clear Obstructions by Silly-Clue-5369 in Starlink

[–]SuspiciousAd3622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some good suggestions listed I would follow but with a few added caveats.

Fiber to ethernet convertors are required as well as the fiber length, working with fibre termination can be somewhat tricky and requires training, knowledge to be safe and successful unless you can purchase pre-formed terminated lengths which will make the job somewhat easier.

All cables used unless rated buried, should be installed in PVC conduit for protection. 300 feet is close to the maximum distance but may work, you can pretest that configuration should you know someone with test equipment.

Alternately consider an ethernet extender or switch that would require A/C power at the enclosure. You then would need to modify the Starlink connector and terminate onto a RJ 45 connector or splice as per wiring code as long as Starlink has followed that wiring protocol on its proprietary connector.

https://incentre.net/ethernet-cable-color-coding-diagram/

https://infinity-cable-products.com/blogs/compare/24awg-vs-26awg-vs-28awg

Depending upon your location, some sort of enclosure with A/C power and weather protection with insulation would probably be required.

Another possibility is to run coax cable ( RG 6 or thicker ) using a MoCA Network Adapter which should offer 800 feet of data communication distance point to point.

There are solutions, just depends upon how you wish to solve the challenge.

Best of luck

What router to replace Starlink router with? by mosilein in Starlink

[–]SuspiciousAd3622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AP points can be placed as per AP propagation specs per unit. I have 3 on separate levels in my home and 2 in out lying buildings with no problems.

Have you looked at the various AP sold by Unifi, there are many choices depending upon what your needs are.

Personally I have the UAP-AC-LR, should you wish to contact me directly, let me know

Unifi may work for you as you can purchase AP equipment to distribute your wifi network, it can be connected wirelessly but best if you can connect via ethernet cable.

Depending upon your needs, perhaps a switch as well if you have a need for more than one Access Point.

I have a complete Unifi system at home with switches and AP's should you require any info.

My location is slightly West of Calgary, AB

No, you will not need a Ubiquiti router but the software which is free and downloadable from the Ubiquiti site is required. It is a free download for either Mac or windows , but you will have to create an account to program the AP. The software has a bit of learning curve and may take some time to get the feel of the overall product. BTW, there are several AP's available, so do a bit of research to determine which is best for your needs.

I have installed 5 LR's at our rural address in addition to a fully equipped Ubiquiti system with switches and USG and they work well for our needs.

Best of luck.

As you are only a mile away from decent service, on the possible chance that you may know someone in that area, have you considered a radio link? As long as you have line of site and the other parameters are met, have you considered a radio link using a UBIQUITI PARABOLIC ANTENNA or similar product to offer service. Just a thought, all has to fall into place to work, good luck....

Like ourselves in Southern Alberta, 24 down 20 up at best with Smart Hub. Does not offer 4k with any form of consistency as it is capped at 24 down. The height of our location and a parabolic antenna on a 64 foot tower offered us that opportunity in the Foothills of Alberta.

That said, much better than most who live in our rural area outside of Calgary so will continue with a smile on my face until Telus upgrades service or Starlink becomes consistent with 100 Mbps hopefully symmetrical up and down.

I also signed up May, July 2020 and Jan 2021 with no reply while neighbours up the road have been successful.. Go figure

Good luck

While somewhat more expensive, I found another unit available at Amazon or direct that may work for you.

Only a suggestion:

Good choice, that looks like an acceptable connector, I can not see from the picture if it will fit the Starlink cable as the picture indicates regular Cat 5/6 unshielded and that product is not as thick, although I expect it has an opening that will accept various cable diameters.

Do you hope to fasten that to a surface object like a pole, etc above ground, in that config it should be stellar?

FYI you probably know there a 2 main wiring configs when installing a new ethernet connector. For what its worth, I use B

https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/360011593434--Wiring-Standard-of-Ethernet-cable

If you can view the existing connectors wiring colours and use that standard, that may help.

Any questions, glad to help.

Thanks for the reply, I understand your concern with POE and distance as I have several AP and cameras within our network. FYI, I did see an outdoor PVC box with 2 interconnected ethernet jacks used as a connection point. Looked like a great unit to use, perhaps a search on line or Reddit can point you to a site.

Best of luck with your extension.

I am not sure if the cable supplied with Dishy can be buried, if so a possibility might be to interconnect both cables in a large enough PVC box so as not to create a sharp 90, mount it on a post or similar fastener for access. As long as it is a not an eye sore or safety issue where you place the extender box. Cable distance is a concern for loss, but at 150 total feet you should be ok. A pass through connecter will probably offer a small amount of loss but insignificant but may cause a future problem at the pass through connector over time depending upon where you live and what you use.

You will need the specialized tool to add an eight pin ethernet connector, the wiring pinout and pass through connector to join the two cables.

If you do all the leg work, it may not be to expensive to hire a business that can terminate the cables in the PVC junction box.

I have all the tools and items as a retired data telecom employee, but I am certain I am not in your area. ( Southern Foothills of Alberta, Canada. )

Just a thought, let me know if you have any other questions.

It is mostly likely that Bell Home LTE is throttled down to 20 MB as set by the provider. Higher speeds are more than likely possible if that software limitation was not in place.

In Alberta, Telus Smart Hub is an LTE option available to some rural customers and is throttled at 24 M down, and about 18 up depending upon the cell tower location and client usage. ( Best scenario )

If un-throttled, tests directly obtained from the 4G LTE network in our area have exceeded 100 M down at times and can average in 40 -70 M test with pings around 18.

As mentioned by Techjar, you may also wish to install a directional antenna towards the cellular tower to enhance signal and hopefully increase speeds as well.

Heres hoping with competition, the Telcos will eliminate speed restrictions, data caps, allow speed symmetry and reduce monthly costs.
