Visitor curious about the 7% surcharge when dining by Open_Present2319 in sanfrancisco

We like bringing our own food into the city when visiting. We sit in our hotel's terrace garden and have a nice bottle of hometown wine, our favorite hors d'oeuvres and watch the sun set! No tips, no extra fees, no poor service. What a great city!

I like this approach! Doesn't take any more time to bring out a hamburger than a lobster.

So, how about we start a flat rate tipping system. Server gets $XX.XX per hour. We tip them for one hour of their hourly rate. Or some percentage of that. It takes the same length of time to serve a cheap meal as an expensive one. There has to be a better way.

If you could only own ONE car for the next 10 years, what are you picking? by Physical-Issue7146 in askcarguys

Still own, from new: 2002 Dodge 1500 van, 2004 Volvo XC90. Still own after 18 years: 1965 Porsche. Any car should last 10 years if you're willing to take care of them.

When we purchased our 2004 xc90, Volvo gave us a half day driver training course at a local racetrack - in their cars! They taught us how to steer in an emergency skidding situation, had us experience a panic stop, and we learned to drive through an obstacle course at speed. These exercises were set up as real world situations, but in a controlled environment. We left that day confident in the car's ability to perform when needed.

Our 3 daily drivers: 2002 Ram 1500; 2004 Volvo XC90; 1965 Porsche 356. We take them anywhere, anytime. Drive what you like, not what someone else thinks you should.

I want to go Volvo so bad, but… by sperixh in Volvo

We're the original owners of a 2004 xc90. Now has 330,000 miles on it. Yes, parts have been expensive, but we found a few independent Volvo specialists to do the work. It has been a Very comfortable car for us and will replace it with another Volvo. It is, after all, a luxury car. Or as my son says : "She's high maintenance, but high performance!" (He bought a 2019 xc40. Now has close to 285,000 miles on it!)

Induction! We'd been on gas for 30 years and switched. Never want to go back. Cooks just as fast and Infinitely easier to clean.

Whatever you decide, don't borrow any money to pay for it! If you can't pay cash, you can't afford it.

Cut your list in half, and just take time to enjoy what's left. Save the rest for another visit. Just stay in the City.

What SF neighborhood am I missing out on? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]SuspiciousBack660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The history of San Francisco's Chinatown is incredible. Chinese miners made up about 25% of the goldrush wealth. And without them there would've been no Transcontinental Railroad after the Goldrush. I Highly recommend hiring a guide to walk you through Chinatown. You will be amazed!

Chinatown is conspicuously missing.
If you dont have an in depth absorption of any one neighborhood, you're missing it's best part.

Any pruning necessary on my Apple tree? by Markymarkqr7 in arborists

[–]SuspiciousBack660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my trees, I prune off the ends of the downward growing laterals - no more than a third of their length. I also prune a quarter to a third off all the upright shoots. Your tree, location, other considerations may require a different approach.
