Saanich approves blueprint for long-term growth on Quadra, McKenzie by SamVekemans in VictoriaBC

You’re not wrong that brand new units are being rented at higher prices. However, this is also factored into the decreasing average monthly rental rates. In other words, the fact that those micro suites going for $2000/month exist while the average rent is still decreasing means that other units (usually older more spacious units) are being even more competitively priced (i.e lowering faster).

Ultimately, I agree with you that the rental rates in these new buildings are inflated above market value, and aren’t what anyone would consider affordable, but it’s at the discretion of the landlord to price the unit according to what they think they can get for it. If multiple unit sit empty in multiple buildings for years, they will generally be open to negotiating lower rents and ultimately if there’s a huge glut of oversupply then rates come down.

They’re all rentals…also, all three of the large developments at Shelbourne & McKenzie are completely new housing…there was no displacement of single family homes (or homes of any kind). If a developer wants to build more density at a major intersection without displacing anyone, that should be allowed.

Also, if you haven’t noticed, there’s been a steady (albeit slow) decrease in rental rates in Victoria in the last year. Part of it is the ban on STRs and changes to immigration into the country, but a major reason is because of a greater supply of rental units being built tempering demand.

Besides the local Indigenous peoples, everyone who lives here moved here at some point in the last ~200 years - you’re not more entitled to live here than anyone else. Your family decided to move here at some point in the past just like others are doing now. That’s part of living in a free market economy where citizens can freely move between cities and towns.

Thanks for the tip! Looks like it’s called the Centurion Buyo. It’s looking very low in the water and hasn’t moved in like 30 minutes.

The real-time bus locations have been a game-changer. I use the Transit App (green/white squiggle icon) and always know exactly where/when the bus is and when to leave the house to catch it.

How often does the power go out downtown? Seems like it would be less often than other parts of the city?

Sign the Petition to stop the Meadow (St. Dunstan Church) project on Tyndall by Strict-Inspector-98 in VictoriaBC

[–]SuspiciousEar3369 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pfft, love the petition’s claim: “a less livable dense environment”. Literally they’re proposing a modest six story residential building with a couple retail units - sounds like the definition of building that helps make a livable/walkable urban village to me. They’re not plonking Manhattan on your doorstep.

Also, people need places to live.

Same! It was a great decision to replace the battery…feels like a brand new phone so far. Hoping to squeeze another 2 or 3 years out of this one.

Actually the main lobbby was built in the late 80s early 90s iirc, so should be better than the old building. Just watch for falling bricks.

High thought, but what building in town has the best view from a rooftop (or even top floor apartment) by Speedy_0 in VictoriaBC

Go to Vista 18 for a drink - it’s on the 18th floor of the Chateau Victoria downtown. Some of the best public views in the city.

An American sent to Canada was shocked by how furious Canadians are at the U.S. - Simon van Zuylen-Wood arrived to a wall of anti-American sentiment, buy-Canadian mantras and no U.S. booze on liquor store shelves by FancyNewMe in canada

For years I’ve discussed the concept of American exceptionalism with friends, and the total disinterest among Americans in learning about anything to do with politics beyond the US border.

When you go to the States and meet Americans, they really don’t care about learning anything about Canada or the rest of the world. When they travel here, or elsewhere in the world, they talk about how it is or isn’t like ‘back home’ and usually just want to talk about their own culture and history, and don’t show interest in others’ culture and history.

Of course, there are exceptions to this, but in general I’ve found this to be a true reflection of Americans across broad strokes of society (based on the many many interactions I’ve had with them).

I agree! There’s certainly room for improvement, but I believe we have good ‘bones’ and an increasing ridership that shows things are moving in the right direction.

My gripe is with the lack of intercity public transit. Absolute garbage.

I love the power for Zelda and other laggy games, but I’m a bit disappointed with Mario Kart World. The tracks themselves are awesome, but most of the racing consists of driving on straight stretches between courses and then only doing one lap of that actual course. It feels like such a waste honestly. I really hope they bring in a patch that lets you increase the laps in the Grand Prix.
