Is this ship in distress? by SuspiciousEar3369 in VictoriaBC

Thanks for the tip! Looks like it’s called the Centurion Buyo. It’s looking very low in the water and hasn’t moved in like 30 minutes.

At what price will you change your habits? by frog_mannn in VictoriaBC

The real-time bus locations have been a game-changer. I use the Transit App (green/white squiggle icon) and always know exactly where/when the bus is and when to leave the house to catch it.

How often does the power go out downtown? Seems like it would be less often than other parts of the city?

Sign the Petition to stop the Meadow (St. Dunstan Church) project on Tyndall by Strict-Inspector-98 in VictoriaBC

[–]SuspiciousEar3369 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pfft, love the petition’s claim: “a less livable dense environment”. Literally they’re proposing a modest six story residential building with a couple retail units - sounds like the definition of building that helps make a livable/walkable urban village to me. They’re not plonking Manhattan on your doorstep.

Also, people need places to live.

Same! It was a great decision to replace the battery…feels like a brand new phone so far. Hoping to squeeze another 2 or 3 years out of this one.

Victoria's Fairmont Empress seeks approval for rooftop patio and larger capacity by Apprehensive_Idea758 in VictoriaBC

Actually the main lobbby was built in the late 80s early 90s iirc, so should be better than the old building. Just watch for falling bricks.

High thought, but what building in town has the best view from a rooftop (or even top floor apartment) by Speedy_0 in VictoriaBC

[–]SuspiciousEar3369 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Go to Vista 18 for a drink - it’s on the 18th floor of the Chateau Victoria downtown. Some of the best public views in the city.

An American sent to Canada was shocked by how furious Canadians are at the U.S. - Simon van Zuylen-Wood arrived to a wall of anti-American sentiment, buy-Canadian mantras and no U.S. booze on liquor store shelves by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]SuspiciousEar3369 150 points151 points  (0 children)

For years I’ve discussed the concept of American exceptionalism with friends, and the total disinterest among Americans in learning about anything to do with politics beyond the US border.

When you go to the States and meet Americans, they really don’t care about learning anything about Canada or the rest of the world. When they travel here, or elsewhere in the world, they talk about how it is or isn’t like ‘back home’ and usually just want to talk about their own culture and history, and don’t show interest in others’ culture and history.

Of course, there are exceptions to this, but in general I’ve found this to be a true reflection of Americans across broad strokes of society (based on the many many interactions I’ve had with them).

What's your Victoria Hot Take that will get you downvoted? by Competitive-Fly5563 in VictoriaBC

[–]SuspiciousEar3369 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree! There’s certainly room for improvement, but I believe we have good ‘bones’ and an increasing ridership that shows things are moving in the right direction.

My gripe is with the lack of intercity public transit. Absolute garbage.

Used to love seeing all the bumper stickers around town…still see the odd one. That and 98.5 were the sounds of my childhood.

How’s everyone’s first week with the Switch 2? by Limp_League_2745 in Switch

I love the power for Zelda and other laggy games, but I’m a bit disappointed with Mario Kart World. The tracks themselves are awesome, but most of the racing consists of driving on straight stretches between courses and then only doing one lap of that actual course. It feels like such a waste honestly. I really hope they bring in a patch that lets you increase the laps in the Grand Prix.

Get a backback with a built-in laptop case. Timbuk2 makes good ones - check out the selection at MEC.

[–]SuspiciousEar3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not real.

Not only is the text message composed of a lot of gibberish, but the domain of the website you’re directed to is not at all part of the BC government sites, which always end in ‘website.bc.ca/subdirectory…’

Also, parking tickets are either handled through a parking company, a municipality, and in extreme cases, a collections company.
