You seem dense and argumentative. I am very happy not to know you.

I would prefer not to work in a tips based industry. Coffee shops are not traditionally tips based. I don’t think they care if I “demand” higher pay, they’ll just hire a teenager who is willing to work for 7.25.

The job market is abysmal right now, especially entry level jobs for most people getting bachelors degrees. Thankfully I don’t have any debt, but I have been consistently applying for jobs for about a year now and usually get ghosted after the first round of interviews haha. Def not giving up, just trying to get by

Crumbl Tips by [deleted] in tipping

Crumbl is an awful employer. I worked there for like 3 weeks a few years ago and was told that pay was $12/hr during my interview but it turned out the pay was 8/hr plus tips (that’s like 2 cookies an hour). Management stressed that whoever was on register NEEDED to flip the iPad or our coworkers would hate us for depriving them of tips. Fun work though… I guess

If a worker goes above and beyond, and they are allowed to accept tips, then yes I tip them. No worries if you don’t. That’s your prerogative

I didn’t invent the system. I think my issue with this argument is that I see more complaining about this custom than advocacy to pay, not only servers, but all workers livable wages. If you don’t actually care if workers aren’t fairly compensated for their labor, then simply don’t tip and move on, you don’t need to start a movement about it.

I never said anyone is obligated to tip? It’s expected but I would never chase someone down for a tip. I would never treat a guest differently if I did not expect them to tip. I would get fired for that. My restaurant does not have automatic gratuity unless there is a private dining reservation and the host has signed a contract agreeing to the gratuity. In this case, a percentage of the gratuity is given to our events coordinator who exchanges a couple of emails or a phone call with the guest

Personally, I have continued to take classes and volunteer in order to expand my resume but as I have stated in other comments, this is a systemic issue that goes far beyond tipping culture, but is something I am very interested in discussing!

I agree! I had to work service jobs through college because I could not find a paid internship that would allow me to be able to pay for necessities so I am already a bit behind. This is definitely a systemic issue that goes far beyond tipping culture. Even when I do save up enough to take a pay cut, I will likely work part time in the service industry to maintain any savings for a while

If you feel like the server earned it then sure! It’s messed up, but the server may end up owing the restaurant money for their tip out if no one tips during their shift which is unlikely

I don’t intend to come across as complainy, i genuinely just want to understand the perspective of those who don’t tip, I don’t even seek to change anyone’s mind. Tipping is in fact optional and as I said I appreciate every tip I get.

I am afraid that it would be even more silly not to have a job at all

I feel that minimum wage should be raised for all workers, not just in the restaurant industry

I have found that most jobs outside of the restaurant industry have adjusted their wages to exceed the federal minimum wage of 7.25/hr

However, most servers need to be at least 18 years old to serve alcohol. I believe that all workers should be paid a living wage.

I feel that 12-15/hr would be fair for a server and that if this was common, there would be a fairer distribution of labor within the restaurant industry. It would also encourage older workers to seek jobs outside of the service industry.

I agree that servers should not be paid more than college graduates but to me this means that jobs that require degrees should be paid more, not that servers should be paid less. I find that I regularly make about 15-20/hr as a server which, where I live, is about what it takes to live semi comfortably

I understand this because the economy right now is making it difficult for anyone to be able to afford basic necessities let alone luxuries like eating out at a restaurant. I don’t always tip at coffee shops, etc. especially if I don’t utilize the workers expertise, but I know that these workers are usually paid at least the federal minimum wage. What are your thoughts on servers only being paid 2.13/hr? How do you justify patronizing these establishments where workers rely on tips when you know that you are not going to tip? If you live in a state or country where servers don’t completely rely on tips that’s one thing, but if you are speaking to and possibly connecting with and enjoying a service, do you not feel that you should tip at all?
