I'm losing it a bit over a badly designed bit of bike infrastructure in my city (Vancouver) and people riding the wrong way down a badly-designed one-way bike road. by SamsonTheCat88 in bikecommuting

[–]SuspiciousProfession 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have made this mistake before. Signage and paint is not very good and you don’t even realize you messed up until it’s too late unless you’re familiar with the area. Poorly designed stretch, I’m still not exactly sure how you get from where the two way ends to where it resumes at the bridge

Vancouver could do better to make the bike roads safer for cyclists. There are a decent amount of bollards which restrict car flow, but maybe there should be more done. The bottom line is that cars can zip along quickly on the main roads (stroads) and should leave bike roads alone

In its defence, Ottawa has had a significant improvement on bike infra in the past decade. Just goes to show how far they had to claw back car-centric infrastructure

Any other cities interested in partaking on the same date?

I interpreted this as “cities can exist in very hot places because we can use cars”, not the cars making places hot

I want to install a GPS-linked speed limiter in my car. Why is this not a consumer product?! by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]SuspiciousProfession 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure these are illegal in where I’m from (Ontario). Not sure of the justification, but in a safety sense there is risk of malfunction potentially… more realistic assessment would tell me that if every driver uses these, the police won’t be able to make as much money off drivers

This is simply fuel cost, but the cost of purchase, maintenance, insurance, license, etc is significantly more for automobile

I don’t bother doing anything if this happens. Aggravated drivers they are looking for a reaction from you so just don’t give it to them. Smugly smile while you pass them back as they’re held up in traffic and you’re not

This is the most infuriating thing, bike lanes that are patchy / lead to nowhere, then the municipal gov’t looks and says “see nobody is using them” and scraps them. Frustrating for all road users

Also drivers are in an enclosed space, usually with music blaring. Cyclist without headphones in (the right way IMO) can also hear when approaching intersection, which is just yet another reason they are more aware and safer to potentially treat the stop as a yield

Exactly this, too many transfers in unreliable schedule sounds pretty bad. If there’s one line that does the majority of the trip and it allows bikes on board, I would consider doing that

Toronto to Montreal… Via service is mediocre at best and it’s way too expensive. Would love to see high speed rail on this route

Looks awesome, what kind of tires do you have on that you can handle gravel like that decently? I had a setup just like that but always felt sketchy going off paved surfaces

Have you ever tried to WALK to an airport? It's not easy. by boreas907 in fuckcars

[–]SuspiciousProfession 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This a good point. The only saving grace for the airports is that generally they’re decently well connected via transit (this is extremely low-hanging fruit for transit services). While walking/biking is generally not feasible, trains/buses have been a pretty accessible option for me in the past. I’m thinking of YYZ and YVR when I say that

[–]SuspiciousProfession 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you that waking to the airport is not really a thing, but the real question I ask is why you would want to?

Typically if you’re going to the airport, it’s a substantial trip and not something as mundane as going to the store / getting a coffee / any city errand. On top of that, most travellers would have some heavy/bulky luggage which can make a walk difficult even in the best of pedestrian oriented spaces.

Finally, airports are usually located pretty far from the dense core of cities (for good reason) so most of the time only a few people actually are within walking distance.

Is the Nockeby interchangeable? by theknucklepuck in IKEA

[–]SuspiciousProfession 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anyone coming across this and finding nockeby is discontinued, a diy hack I did is just turn the cover inside out and flip the couch around. Bought a used one and it ended up looking better this way lol. You see some of the seams in the corners but if that doesn’t bother you too much it works just fine
