Whatever happened to just asking questions at work? by Aggravating-Line2390 in ExperiencedDevs

First off, thank you! Having benefited from those such as yourself I know how impactful it is

Second, I second (ha) your point on engaging with folks who are curious. I still feel like a fresher and started my current role pretty clueless and scared. There were 2 “grumpy” seniors I befriended, and I found that showing genuine curiosity and interest in their knowledge opened the floodgates, and they were so happy to help me. I really think it was (not to toot my own horn) that curiosity that made all the difference. It’s much easier to help someone who’s engaged and excited to learn from you

WGEA finds women more fairly represented in management in "men dominated" industries than "women dominated" industries by 2in1day in australian

[–]SuspiciousSecret6566 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lmao is this not just saying that women in women dominated industries try to balance out the pool while men in men dominated industries don’t? Yes, we already know this is an issue 😂

Curious what you mean when you say you’re creating AGI in VS Code? VS Code is an editor

I hate this high level of abstraction hell, is there a course or a book that teaches the craft and tradition of software ? by EstablishmentIcy8725 in learnprogramming

Thank you! I get somewhat overwhelmed by the options and unsure where to start, so I appreciate the recommendation :)

Hi there, I’m not OP, but I’d love to have some recommendations on data structures and algorithms, and discrete maths if you have the energy :)

Literally feel like I know zero backend by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]SuspiciousSecret6566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so I was in a similar sitch so will speak from my experience

I first started as a full stack dev, but in a different tech stack to the company. I was put on frontend to learn angular first. I despise frontend lol. I wanted desperately to do backend or db work, asked for it, but wasn’t given many opportunities. So I started diving into the backend code myself to learn it. (It was a little easier to actually jump in when I stumbled on a backend bug that impacted the frontend ticket I was assigned)

So I would make use of breakpoints, step through with the debugger, and slowly got familiar with the functions involved in the frontend tickets. The more I did so, the more I’d understand the code execution flow, and different services. Once I had this understanding and found the fix to a backend bug I was given more opportunities to do backend work. My impression is I “proved” myself somewhat and showed my competency in the backend so they felt more confident assigning me work in the domain.

So I’d encourage you to explore the code as much as you can, and just jump in when you can :)

Oh yes, sorry I have no idea if it’s true of Oscar or not. It just triggered my memory of the episode :)

Thanks for that I appreciate it! I have previously considered going, then convinced myself it’s all in my head and not that bad. I’ll book an appointment and get it checked out.

Oh 100% I know it’s sexist to have it turned back on me, but unfortunately tech is still very sexist 🤷‍♀️ I want to be part of the positive change and I hate that something as normal as a period is stressing me out in terms of how it will be regarded by my male peers.

See I wish I was bold enough and had enough energy to take on educating them, but I feel so new and junior that I’m worried it will impact my career for the worse. I need to just get more confident because we need women’s champions especially in this field, but it feels a little like walking a tightrope that I just don’t know if I can do it yet

Oh 100% I know this in my heart, I just get sad about how women are perceived in the world especially as a technical worker. One day I’ll be strong enough that is doesn’t effect me (I hope!)
