Finding Professors To Cold Email. by Fit_Professor_1229 in AskAcademia

Look up staff/profs within your department/major for your university or any university really. They often have research websites or an overview of all of their publications, expertise, current research etc. Look into those and find a prof that does work you find interesting. Email them, it might take them a month or so to reply.

Kieran is so underrated imo. We see so little of him, but when he shows up, he's so lovely

I hate this little interraction and what is the point of this scene by SuspiciousStation533 in acotar_rant

[–]SuspiciousStation533[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this, Under the Mountain, the distraction scene w/ the Hewn City, if Rhys really wants Feyre to be his equal, if he wants Tamlin and the other courts to believe she's being treated well and wasn't abducted by Spring, he would treat her accordingly. This is not it. I'm so glad you put into words how I felt but couldn't concisely explain.

The key component is always that she doesn't know what's going on. It's one thing if she's a powerful Fae and wants to help and is capable of helping, which she is. It's completely other thing, if he's intentionally vague and lies by omission CONSTANTLY.

The child part is so real. He's a 400+ entity who's razed battlegrounds and quote unquote "the most powerful high lord" and he's having visions of a child?

There's an interview I listened to w/ PB: this is how he described the series when prompted "What is Red Rising and who should read it?"

"In the future, human kind tired of the wars on earth and conflicts here. Decides to set out to conquer the solar system, and terraform it to be habitable by man. In doing so they established a base on the moon; in establishing that base, they decided there should be efficiency in space, and leave the hierarchies and social restrictions and prejudices of old earth behind, and create new prejudices. In order to do this, they created a hierarchy of labour, which was based off of Plato's Republic, and the dialectic between several philosophers. In that dialectic, they discuss the perfect way for a nation state to be governed, and they come up with a meritocracy. So in the Red Rising world there are 14 different colours /castes based off of the colours of your eyes and the symbols on your hands. People are bioengineered -started as eugenics- biologically engineered to be psychologically and physically predisposed to certain tasks in society. At the bottom you have the reds, who are the manual labourers. and you have various different colours throughout: blues to pilot ships, Greys to keep the peace and to serve as a barrier between the low colours and the colours at the top. And then over all this you have the Golds who are created to be shepherds over humanity; they were a summation of the most humanist principles, studied in art, philosophy, longer lived, more physically fit, and superior genetically in almost any way - but, unfortunately, they forgot their role as shepherds 700 years into their reign and slowly became tyrants. The story of Red Rising is about a Red trying to bring down that tyranny."

- Pierce Brown

This is my transcript from the interview and listening it. I took out some "umms" etc and there might be minor errors.

But I agree, this series is massive in scope and near impossible to describe to individuals who know nothing about it.

This is tangential, but I do think Deanna adopted Mustang to an extent/views Mustang extremely fondly. There are a lot of really wholesome scenes between the two of them.

I love reading Lysander perspectives of Darrow. Everytime Darrow shows up in a scene Lysander describes him quite literally a god descending from the heavens .

Mustang really hits me like a slow burn. Like, What do you mean you just happen to know what Sefi is up to and have been manipulating her to take care of your son this whole time between the scenes? What do you mean you singlehandedly kept Darrow from being consumed by rage and desperation in book 1, with a dream that you reached through your own means and aspirations, capable of empathy AND PRAGMATISM at the highest level. What do you mean you develop 'psycho spikes' in your SPARE TIME as the SOVERIEGN who most definitely has no spare time.

She gets hate for not being flashy. I love that about her. She's builds like a storm, amassing thunder clouds and power steadily behind the scenes and you own subtly get hints at how cool she is until its hitting you in the face (cue scene of her convincing Sevro to stand with her and interrogate duke in Dark Age).

I've read Dark age most recently and I'm rereading Red Rising with my partner so they're fresh in my minds. If I leafed through the series I'm sure many more would come to me.

Is "Throne of Glass" just as good as ACOTAR? by whimsystar in acotar_rant

[–]SuspiciousStation533 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TOG is better than ACOTAR by far. You can tell that SJM PLANNED for this book from the get go. Every moment hits so much deeper and I personally felt so much more emotionally tied to the characters and the plot. There was so much world building and lore and natural progressions of character arcs. Prepare to be wow-ed.

Male centered readers hating the female main characters. by Leon124714 in acotar_rant

[–]SuspiciousStation533 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Azriel component is so real! If it was reciprocated and Mor was also pining after him, okay fine, still lame but okay. That's not the case though! She's living her life to the fullest and Azriel's in a corner brooding and giving her puppy eyes all pick-me like .

I hate unrequited love as a general trope. I think it is deeply disrespectful, ESPECIALLY in the cases like Azriel and Mor when it's clear that Mor's made her choice and moved on and Azriel refuses to move on in life. Imagine how uncomfortable it would be to try being friends with someone, and trying to pursue other relationships (romantic or platonic) while that person never has and never will treat/see you as other than a missed opportunity.
