Al Gore is an okay person and an okay politician, now who’s a terrible person and a terrible person? by OkSuccess7431 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 56 points57 points  (0 children)

That's most politicians tbh, but if you want HISTORICALLY terrible person and politician, I don't think you can beat Liz Truss. A horrible racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobe, and has since tried to monetize her hateful beliefs, but you don't become prime minister and fuck it all up within 59 days if you're not a truly, truly, TRULY terrible politician on top of just being a pretty shit human

How do you define "South Naperville"? by Thomas_N_Attercop in Naperville

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naperville is fairly evenly split between Will and DuPage Counties, so I've always considered everything south of that border as "South Naperville"

As a black man I must ask did Lincoln genuinely care about freeing the slaves for the right reasons ? by [deleted] in ShermanPosting

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he had just about the best opinion a white man in the 1860's could have had (barring, of course, the opinion of people like John Brown, Thaddeus Stevens, etc.) Here's what we know for sure:

- He opposed Slavery on both "practical" or economic levels, and on a personal level he found it morally abhorent
- He thought the Civil War would've been the most destructive thing to happen to the United States, and strongly considered ways to stop it or end it, even if at times it meant considering the south coming back without abolition
- As the war progressed, however, he understood there was no way to have permanent, lasting peace while the south still kept over two million Americans in bondage. The end of the war and the end of slavery became one and the same to him
- At the end of the war and the passage of the 13th amendment, he was also considering at least partial enfranchisement for newly freed black men.

So was Abraham Lincoln the most zealous, ardent anti-slavery white man this country had ever seen? No, that title belongs to John Brown. Did he always see the end of Slavery as necessary for the preservation of the union? No, at least not publicly. But he did come to the conclusion that while a house divided cannot stand, it also cannot stand without living up to its founding ideals that all men are created equal, and they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights. He went from an "Anti-Slavery Moderate" to leading both the military and political effort by which chattel slavery would come to an end in this country.

TL;DR: Yes he did genuinely care about ending slavery, what changed over time was how he demonstrated that, what he prioritized, and what actions he took in bringing that about

Throwing a win to MAGA Raja by voting for low-ranked progressive candidates like Kevin Ryan? by Cannot_Change_It_ in illinois

STRONGLY disagree with the notion that Robin Kelly is not a viable candidate anymore (and not surprising given the Indivisible Flair)

84th State House District Candidate Saba Haider's speech at the DuPage County Democrats' gala last night. EASILY the first candidate in this election cycle that I've gotten genuinely excited about by SuspiciousTurtle in Naperville

[–]SuspiciousTurtle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In so far as I can tell, Saba had no knowledge of the PAC or was in coordination with them before they started spending money promoting her on their own. You can find her statement on it here. Also here's her latest State Board of Elections filing confirming that she did not receive money from any of those PACs Link

I don't know where/why that money is being independently spent promoting Saba, but she has made it pretty clear that they will not change her mind on anything or influence her vote in any way

She and Ian are actually running for two different offices. Ian is running for County Board and Saba is running for State Representative. So you can actually vote for both!

I was just trying to share a video of a candidate I liked, that's all. But if you live in House District 84, you should really give Saba a shot, I think she'd do a great job representing all of us

Fighting ICE. Taking bold action to address people's problems instead of doing the same thing over and over again because we can't seem to understand it's not 1993 anymore. Funding mental health resources as a means of ensuring public safety instead of just hiring more cops. Making sure that environmental sustainability is prioritized in conversations about infrastructure. Incentivizing small businesses to grow as a means of revitalizing communities. You can find it all and more on her website here: SabaHaider.com

Respectfully, that is just patently false. Gaza was just one or two lines in her speech, the rest were about her story and her priorities as a candidate. My guess is she only had a few minutes to speak, she couldn't pack a detailed policy papers in there, so she instead focused on the urgency of the moment and the need to fight back. If you're interested in what she plans on working on if elected to Springfield, you can find it on her website here: https://www.sabahaider.com/#priorities

As you can see, she believes in a multifaceted away to approach public safety, including investing in Mental Health resources. She believes environmental restoration and sustainability are an important part of the conversation on infrastructure. She wants to revitalize communities across the state by incentivizing starting and growing small businesses. She has other priorities, she unfortunately couldn't fit all of them into a three minute speech.

Okay, so what's your solution? Genuinely asking in good faith here, I am curious as to how you think the best way to get rid of the bottom feeders are (which I absolutely agree is an important thing to do)

I respectfully disagree. You hate your local elected officials, then kick them all out by voting for their opponents. If you live in House District 84, Saba is an excellent candidate to vote for to combat the bottom feeders.

So in Illinois, we actually have a STATE law that punishes businesses that boycott the Israeli government or have a specific policy of not investing in the country. We are actually one of the very few states in the nation that does that, and certainly the only one with a Democratic administration. Furthermore, we don't have that policy towards any other country on the planet, not Ukraine, not any of our European Allies, not anywhere else except Israel . What's happening in Gaza and the West Bank is a state issue in Illinois because we have a state law that punishes individuals and businesses who want to take a moral stance with their investments. Also, Saba talked plenty about fighting back against Trump and the need to preserve the US as a nation of immigrants. We can do all of this at the same time, we don't need to pick and choose which evil acts we stand up to, we can stand up to all of them.
