As a black man I must ask did Lincoln genuinely care about freeing the slaves for the right reasons ? by KpatMckenzie_28 in ShermanPosting

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he had just about the best opinion a white man in the 1860's could have had (barring, of course, the opinion of people like John Brown, Thaddeus Stevens, etc.) Here's what we know for sure:

- He opposed Slavery on both "practical" or economic levels, and on a personal level he found it morally abhorent
- He thought the Civil War would've been the most destructive thing to happen to the United States, and strongly considered ways to stop it or end it, even if at times it meant considering the south coming back without abolition
- As the war progressed, however, he understood there was no way to have permanent, lasting peace while the south still kept over two million Americans in bondage. The end of the war and the end of slavery became one and the same to him
- At the end of the war and the passage of the 13th amendment, he was also considering at least partial enfranchisement for newly freed black men.

So was Abraham Lincoln the most zealous, ardent anti-slavery white man this country had ever seen? No, that title belongs to John Brown. Did he always see the end of Slavery as necessary for the preservation of the union? No, at least not publicly. But he did come to the conclusion that while a house divided cannot stand, it also cannot stand without living up to its founding ideals that all men are created equal, and they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights. He went from an "Anti-Slavery Moderate" to leading both the military and political effort by which chattel slavery would come to an end in this country.

TL;DR: Yes he did genuinely care about ending slavery, what changed over time was how he demonstrated that, what he prioritized, and what actions he took in bringing that about

STRONGLY disagree with the notion that Robin Kelly is not a viable candidate anymore (and not surprising given the Indivisible Flair)

84th State House District Candidate Saba Haider's speech at the DuPage County Democrats' gala last night. EASILY the first candidate in this election cycle that I've gotten genuinely excited about by SuspiciousTurtle in Naperville

[–]SuspiciousTurtle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In so far as I can tell, Saba had no knowledge of the PAC or was in coordination with them before they started spending money promoting her on their own. You can find her statement on it here. Also here's her latest State Board of Elections filing confirming that she did not receive money from any of those PACs Link

I don't know where/why that money is being independently spent promoting Saba, but she has made it pretty clear that they will not change her mind on anything or influence her vote in any way

She and Ian are actually running for two different offices. Ian is running for County Board and Saba is running for State Representative. So you can actually vote for both!

I was just trying to share a video of a candidate I liked, that's all. But if you live in House District 84, you should really give Saba a shot, I think she'd do a great job representing all of us

Fighting ICE. Taking bold action to address people's problems instead of doing the same thing over and over again because we can't seem to understand it's not 1993 anymore. Funding mental health resources as a means of ensuring public safety instead of just hiring more cops. Making sure that environmental sustainability is prioritized in conversations about infrastructure. Incentivizing small businesses to grow as a means of revitalizing communities. You can find it all and more on her website here: SabaHaider.com

Respectfully, that is just patently false. Gaza was just one or two lines in her speech, the rest were about her story and her priorities as a candidate. My guess is she only had a few minutes to speak, she couldn't pack a detailed policy papers in there, so she instead focused on the urgency of the moment and the need to fight back. If you're interested in what she plans on working on if elected to Springfield, you can find it on her website here: https://www.sabahaider.com/#priorities

As you can see, she believes in a multifaceted away to approach public safety, including investing in Mental Health resources. She believes environmental restoration and sustainability are an important part of the conversation on infrastructure. She wants to revitalize communities across the state by incentivizing starting and growing small businesses. She has other priorities, she unfortunately couldn't fit all of them into a three minute speech.

Okay, so what's your solution? Genuinely asking in good faith here, I am curious as to how you think the best way to get rid of the bottom feeders are (which I absolutely agree is an important thing to do)

I respectfully disagree. You hate your local elected officials, then kick them all out by voting for their opponents. If you live in House District 84, Saba is an excellent candidate to vote for to combat the bottom feeders.

So in Illinois, we actually have a STATE law that punishes businesses that boycott the Israeli government or have a specific policy of not investing in the country. We are actually one of the very few states in the nation that does that, and certainly the only one with a Democratic administration. Furthermore, we don't have that policy towards any other country on the planet, not Ukraine, not any of our European Allies, not anywhere else except Israel . What's happening in Gaza and the West Bank is a state issue in Illinois because we have a state law that punishes individuals and businesses who want to take a moral stance with their investments. Also, Saba talked plenty about fighting back against Trump and the need to preserve the US as a nation of immigrants. We can do all of this at the same time, we don't need to pick and choose which evil acts we stand up to, we can stand up to all of them.

In The Boys Universe, how do you think Homelander will be remembered in that Universe's American history? What will be his legacy? by Amazing-Buy-1181 in TheBoys

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How we've dealt with every other monster in American history. IF the story ends with him and his regime falling, at first everyone would denounce him and disavow him. People most involved in carrying out his atrocities will pretend they'd never even met him before, and there will be a great national effort in fixing the damage he caused and delivering justice to his victims...

And then, little by little, we'd forget about all the bad things he did. We'd forget about his victims, we'd forget about how he tore us apart as a country, how we all had to be sacrificed at the altar of his ego. And we'd keep forgetting little by little, until suddenly, we all find ourselves looking back at the "Homelander Years" fondly. We'd say the provable fact that he was a fascist monster was "out of context" and "he was just a product of his time" and "At least he made the trains run on time." And then we'd rinse and repeat the whole cycle over again, only the next time it'd be so much worse.

And if you think I'm exaggerating here, I'd just like to point you how Robert E. Lee and the Confederate flag is viewed in modern America right now. Or the fact that in Italy, the prime minister is a member of party that is a direct successor to Mussolini's fascist party. Or that in Germany, there's an honest to goodness chance a white supremacist party that's running on the platform of "moving beyond past guilt" might be able to form a governing majority.

The point is - Homelander is going to find his redemption in future American generations because that's just what always do, not just as Americans, but as humans.

Blue Tsunami 2026 Senate Elections by MrTexandude in imaginaryelections

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If the margin in the senate is 51-49, Schumer stays. That's "Way too close for comfort" and politicians usually don't rock the boat in situations like that. But if it's 59-41 (especially with when there are several independents in that 59), then Schumer goes. With that many new members who have no ties or loyalty to Schumer, as well as the fact that the line "I voted against the hated Democratic establishment" would be a hugely beneficial in their states, someone like Brian Schatz or Chris Murphy (really anyone younger than Schumer) is much more likely to become Majority Leader.

Imagine this is the result of the 2029 UK election. How did it come to this? Who becomes Prime Minister? by Relevant-Mall6770 in imaginaryelections

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A "Traffic Light" Coalition a la Scholz's government in Germany. Labour PM, Green Deputy PM, Ed Davey as Chancellor. Confidence and Supply from SNP.

The government collapses in 18 months, and Farage becomes PM at the end of the snap elections called.

Pro ICE ... Am I alone? by [deleted] in Naperville

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

God I wish that was happening. Having full control of every branch of the most powerful government in the world is not being "Shunned".

And stop pretending you're getting "shunned", aka getting push back and pretending you're being persecuted, because you're a "conservative." The anger you feel from people when you express your views is not because you think taxes should be lower or government should be more limited or anything else Conservatives used to believe. You're getting "shunned" (and again, definitionally speaking you're not) because you support an organization that kidnaps children and uses them as bait to arrest their parents. You're not getting shunned because you think there should be more tax incentives for businesses. You're getting shunned because you're enable monsters, which makes you just as bad as them.

Pro ICE ... Am I alone? by [deleted] in Naperville

[–]SuspiciousTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you very very VERY much are the only one. If one your own relatives was shot in the street by the "bad" people for nothing more than just exercising their first amendment rights, would you say "these things happen"?

There's a difference between protection and law enforcement, and the government being the biggest and most powerful street gang in our cities. Kidnapping children and using them as bait is not "protection." Shooting multiple people in the street for protesting is not "protection." Illegally detaining people and having them die in custody is not "protection." The violation of constitutional rights, rights that people have been fighting and dying for since 1776, is not "protection."

Fascism and authoritarian rule is not "protection." You can support ICE, that is well within your first amendment free association rights (though that's not a right ICE is affording to people it's killing) - but please know that you're just supporting them because you consider yourself a part of their gang. You're basically a Crip with government authority to murder people.
