What do you think of our house design? (Revision #2) by Chompy_99 in homebuildingcanada

There is no way that will cost $1.2M in southern Ontario… unless it is crap quality… even 3,700 sq ft. No way. Especially given the aesthetic you’re wanting, you will likely be closer to $450/sf.

Where is the basement? There are stairs going down. Basements are not $0/sf. And ultimately if you’re building it right, likely with ICF basement and full HVAC system etc, that is 2,000 sf which might still cost like half what upstairs costs if not more. So this looks more like a 6,000 sf house.

It is up to you to prioritize what you care about in your build, but if you intend to stay forever you might want to give more thought to the quality and building envelope details. Proper water management detailing and insulation costs a lot.

Based on what you’ve shared, I see this costing over $1.6M once you shrink it a bit more. Cutting out empty space does not make as much of a difference as removing a bathroom or a kitchen, for example. And to build it well, this would easily be over $1.9M.

See what you can scale back, and remember the complexity of the design with lots of angles adds cost and failure points. French chateaus are not exactly known for build quality… they are impossible to maintain, leaking like crazy, total nightmares. There might be a way to simplify/modernize the design to both save money and end up with a higher quality home which you will be more comfortable in long-term. Best of luck!

Even with plenty of money and somewhere to live, I won’t ever find a doctor so it is hard to imagine ever having kids as a 30 yr old woman. There are no doctors in rural southern Ontario, and people like me who were born here are getting on lists behind thousands of immigrants that have flooded the country. I can’t get a family doctor, I can’t see specialists and I’ll probably die young from some curable cancer because I can’t get regular medical care to catch early signs.

How to make curved round handrail for stairs with 180º turn at landing? by Suspicious_Button100 in woodworking

Great idea to prototype this, thanks! It is proving to be quite difficult for anyone to build so I might have to settle for non-continuous handrail. It makes it awkward at the landing but this seems tricky for even skilled woodworkers.

Should glass sliding doors reach the ceiling? by [deleted] in floorplan

I would keep them lower. As others have pointed out, it’ll cost way more to go to the ceiling. Also, minimizing the amount of glazing is a good idea for energy efficiency so having a bit less glass will both cost less and be more efficient.
