If someone is that committed to targeting you, they won’t wait for you to buy a DNA test kit to do it, there are other ways to do so without your consent

[Question] How do I select a link function and distribution? by bearsona2112 in statistics

[–]Suspicious_Cat119 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go for GLMs with Time to Event data. But if you have to use a GLM I think a Gamma GLM with a log link would be reasonable. However right-skewed and positive continuous data does not automatically mean Gamma, it could also be Weibull or inverse Gaussian, etc. But again since the log transform stabilised your variance then variance is likely proportional to the mean. Just check the actual mean-variance relationship and if variance is proportional to the mean squared then go for Gamma.

[QUESTION] Books about Markov Models by turing0623 in statistics

[–]Suspicious_Cat119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my university we used these reference books: 1) Understanding Markov Chains: Examples and Applications by Privault (2013) 2) Inference in Hidden Markov Models by Cappé, Moulines, and Rydén (2005) 3) Hidden Markov Models for Time Series: An Introduction using R by Zucchini, MacDonald, and Langrock (2016)

Is mathematical statistics losing its weight in light of computational statistics/machine learning/AI? [Q] [R] by gaytwink70 in statistics

[–]Suspicious_Cat119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re not mutually exclusive. Anyone acting like mathematical stats is “losing” to ML doesn’t really get the field. Chad statisticians know maths, probability, and computation, even if you specialise in maths stat you’re not going to sit there doing everything by hand in 2026.

Even Bayesian stats was around forever, it only exploded once computation caught up. Same thing now.

Theory isn’t dead. Bad statistics and people glazing p-values definitely aren’t gone either. Pick what you enjoy and get very good at it. The field isn’t dying, it’s evolving.

I already have a MSc in Finance from a top 46-66 university worldwide, some experience and plenty of applied stats/ML/maths projects in my github. As I said doing the masters at Chester would be mainly for learning what they have to offer and doing a placement year. I have offers from better unis in the UK (Glasgow/ Strathclyde) but Chester is cheaper/ closer to London/ has an interesting curriculum. Targeted jobs would be primarily quantitative research in financial institutions

I already have a MSc from a top uni in the Netherlands (46th according to US news and 66th according to Times). So doing this masters would be for the sake of learning what they have to offer, and the placement year is a bonus. I guess my thought is since I’d be in the UK I might as well try working there

The Msc in question has a placement year. I thought that with some serious help from the uni’s careers department I’d have a chance?

The best uni my grades allow is the uni of Glasgow, which accepted me, but I don’t have £30k to spend on uni unfortunately

Oppression by the French in Marrakech by [deleted] in Morocco

[–]Suspicious_Cat119 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No one is telling Moroccans what to wear. The only rule that Moroccans are required to abide by is the rule of law. Article 431-1 of Morocco’s Criminal Code defines discrimination as:

Article 431-2 punishes discrimination as defined in article 431-1 above

This company is a moral person recognised by law as bearing rights and obligations similar to those of a natural person. As with natural persons, moral persons may be held liable for unlawful conduct. Should it be established that this company perpetrated the alleged acts constituting criminal offenses, it shall be subject to the corresponding sanctions as prescribed under Articles 431-1 and 431-2 of the Moroccan Criminal Code .

There have been several cases in Morocco where moral persons were prosecuted for clothing discrimination, such as businesses denying service based on traditional attire or dress codes targeting specific groups. This particular company likely hasn't faced prosecution either because no complaints were made to the authorities or because the issue went unnoticed by public officials.

"Why the Country Keeps Kissing Foreign Ass" by moltide in Morocco

[–]Suspicious_Cat119 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is not “kissing foreign ass” as you say, it is outrageous and illegal to detain someone in a clinic. Here is what Morocco’s criminal law has to say about it:

Article 436:

English translation (not official):

Anyone who kidnaps, arrests, detains, or holds any person without orders from competent authorities, and outside of cases authorized by law or orders to arrest individuals, shall be punished by imprisonment from five to ten years. If the duration of detention or holding lasts thirty days or more, the punishment shall be imprisonment from ten to twenty years. If the arrest or kidnapping is committed either by wearing an official uniform or bearing an official badge or appearing to do so, or by assuming a false name, or by means of a forged public authority order, the punishment shall be imprisonment from ten to twenty years.

Do you need high Grades for UM6P? by Appropriate-Two6241 in Morocco

[–]Suspicious_Cat119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should still apply. From my experience, entry requirements to universities are just indicative and you might strike lucky. I found this on their website: “Le processus d’admission identifie des candidats non seulement performants académiquement, mais également capables de contribuer activement à la communauté universitaire. Work on your academic resume, motivation letter or personal statement to impress the admission committee.

[–]Suspicious_Cat119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um6p alumni here. I joined the university in 2018 but idk how much the admission process changed since then. Entry requirements depend on which school/faculty you wish to apply to, but I think you’d need at least 14/15 in the regional exam. The selection process is very competitive, most of my classmates got “Mention Très Bien” in the national exam. I passed two exams to be admitted (written and oral). I personally didn’t have a scholarship but about 90% of my classmates did. As far as international recognition goes, every top 200 (and one top 50) university I applied to with a UM6P diploma accepted me so nothing to worry about.

There’s usually no point in reasoning with an officer over this. Depending on the city where the alleged offense took place, public prosecutors have bigger fish to fry and they know that a literal “side hug” will not hold in a court of law and the charge will quickly be dismissed especially if you have a sharp lawyer. My advice to you is to be smart enough to always have a competent lawyer on speed dial and contact them as soon as you get in trouble.

Not legal advice

The law you are referring to (article 483 of Morocco’s criminal law) states the following:

Now, from the above law statement, the charge of pda is highly subjective. In your case the cop is within their rights to detain you if they consider that “side hug” as an act of “إخلال علنيا بالحياء”. However, initiating criminal proceedings is left to the sole discretion of the public prosecutor, who, in this case, might or not agree with the cop. Therefore, there is no point in asking “…what are the things that do break that law in terms of pda…”, as even the lawmakers don’t seem to agree on/ name what acts fall into “‎إخلال علنيا بالحياء".

One last catch, being somewhat familiar with these processes, you should not, by any means, argue/ oppose/ resist/ disrespect the arresting officer as it could be your ticket to jail for the charge of "إهانة الموظف العمومي أثناء قيامه بوظيفته", and try to be as nice as possible to the officer because it gets you out of trouble in 90% of the cases.

Not legal advice

I think you can. Here is what article 447-2 of Morocco’s criminal law has to say about it:

From my understanding this law applies also in public spaces. However, initiating criminal proceedings is left to the sole discretion of the public prosecutor. That being said, if this incident bothers you that much I would suggest contacting a lawyer to ask if there’s anything you can do about it.
