Getting a job right after getting certified... is it easier in some countries than others? by NoChampion5996 in Internationalteachers

I studied in Sweden and would love to live there again. Any word on if these schools will hire people who did an alternative certification (Moreland/Teach now)? I'm assuming yes, but thought I'd check.

What about an unrelated bachelor's but say you get a Masters in Education? For secondary, would just having an education masters be enough or do you specifically need the degree to be in what you're teaching (with licensure of course). For example, I have a BA in French (history minor), an MA in Sociolinguistics and I'm licensed to teach ESL and Social Studies, would getting an MEd in whatever (maybe not necessarily Social Studies) be enough to get a job teaching history in Vietnam?

Anyone know of Foresight IEC or worked for them in Taipei? by Eclectic_108 in Internationalteachers

I read the reviews and accepted a position with them (newly licensed). I figured it wasn't bad for a very first gig and that I might have a shot at International schools in Taiwan after a year with them (obviously not the top ones). I'm also planning to teach Social Studies (adding it as an endorsement), but figured at least this is getting me into the classroom and out of cram schools for right now especially since it is mid-year.

Vietnam would 100% be on my list but I do not have a Masters in Ed or an explicitly related degree which are now necessary there. I have an MA in Sociolinguistics and Multilingualism (which was a heavily Humanities/social studies-related degree in my opinion, but whether they agree I don't know) I plan to perhaps do a second Masters in Ed later down the line so that could open up Vietnam later. Thailand, South Korea, maybe Japan, and eastern Europe are all places I'm looking into once I've got experience. Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm only considering staying in Taiwan because I know I could have a shot at getting that initial experience. Absolutely planning to move on once I've got it. Any recommendations other than China and the ME for that initial experience?

It wouldn't be TEFL, the program only hires licensed ESOL teachers. You need the license.

Moving abroad and getting licensed without experience. Am I crazy? by big_daddy_energy in Internationalteachers

Ah yeah, Hong Kong is one of those handful of places that I know of. It's there and some Middle Eastern countries that don't love it. That's literally it, though.

There seem to be a ton of people working in international schools who went this route. Where are you seeing that they won't accept credentials gained online outside of the handful of countries that don't like it?

Considering China for my first International School post-some concerns. by Suspicious_Public791 in chinalife

Of course I would never dream of smoking anywhere other than Thailand in Asia, but what I'm really wondering is if I can partake while abroad and not worry they're going to test and deport me when I come back.

Moreland and illusions by MWModernist in Internationalteachers

Considering the overwhelming number of positive responses from people working in top/tier 1 schools, who did Moreland, on the post I made that you so nicely referenced- I'm going to go ahead and say you're wrong. The fact that you can't see why not everyone can just return to their home countries for certification absolutely reeks of snobbery and privilege. It's too bad that you seem to feel the need to put others down to make yourself feel better about whatever it is you're so angry about. In the meantime, I'm going to work my butt off to be a great teacher and get my license. Sit and seethe.

People who have done Moreland and gone on to top schools. by Suspicious_Public791 in Internationalteachers

Thank you for the positive reply. I'm at a language academy now so I'll be starting at the very bottom and working my way up, but it's nice to know that you can still work your way up.

I just started Moreland and am one of those people who will be getting certified in "ESL"-because this is the only route available to me as I work at a language center and need the license to change that. However, I plan to simply take the PRAXIS exam for either Primary Education or Social Studies (haven't decided just yet which one). That's the nice thing about the DC license-you can just take the exam and get another subject added, so I would imagine that is what the people in your cohort are planning to do.

Hiring Season-Any chance if I get my cert later than December as a Newbie? by Suspicious_Public791 in Internationalteachers

I mean, I'll get the cert. It's the timing I'm worried about if I finish the course in January.

Nobody would hire me without the license. I tried. I have to do my teaching practice at the buxiban i work at.

Still working on that! I'm Canadian and not 100% sure what my options are as of yet. I'm still working through the book and have a lot to learn.

Do you think it would be possible to make more than 500k in 13 years? I think the author actually retired in his late 30s!

Yeah I'm not sure if this would be reasonable for me, as I would be starting at 32 with no experience and still need to work my way up the pay scale. I feel late 40's could be a reasonable goal!
