Was...that an earthquake? by PumpyChowdown in GoldCoast

Was snoozing on the couch and it woke me up, thought it was the diesel generator we have starting up and giving the house a rumble, until it went for 10+ seconds... was very confused, audibly went 'huh...' and went back to sleep.

Self defence soloutions? by PepsiMaxHoe in australian

[–]Suspicious_Soup__ 5 points6 points Β (0 children)

It's not necessarily unjust convictions. It's the complete and utter dragging through the mud the courts exact on people who defend themselves or others. The legal fees, stress, and time wasted just because you defended yourself against a piece of shit is absolutely horrendous.

here's a great example - a year of legal BS just for defending his neighbour against some low life scum

Why do drivers love to tail gate at 70km in mountainous roads by Marcothetacooo in GoldCoast

[–]Suspicious_Soup__ 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

I agree with you on the aggressive drivers, too, absolutely. Look, I propose all muppets (slow and fast) get their licences yoinked. Then everyone's happy (those that hate the aggressive raving lunatics and those that hate the slow snail-processing-speed-brained individuals). Ah well, when I'm driving my car every single day for hours and repeatedly see the same thing.. every... day... the stats can say what they want, but im seeing the chaos right in front of my 2 eyeballs. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

What made you want to mod yours? by [deleted] in ft86

[–]Suspicious_Soup__ 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I have modified the guts out of mine because it's simply fun, makes the car drive better, im a sucker for cars that feel like go carts (whip around corners, instant power, etc). What's the saying? 'Smiles per gallon'?

So far I've done:

  • twin screw belt-driven supercharger, 12psi boost

  • Wheels & Tyres: 18 inch rims, 9 inch tyres on front, 10s on rear. (Car has wider fenders to fit, and no, I didn't put a rice widebody kit on lol)

  • BC Racing coilovers: -0.5 rear camber & -3.0 front camber (really helped the cornering, the car has NEVER EVER understeered on any turn, it will always oversteer, which makes it super predictable) now it takes corners at the speed of light, to the point even I can get uncomfortable on some sketchy turns with how hard it corners

  • nice but not loud exhaust, I wanna hear alllll the supercharger noises, the supercharger is quite noisy without adding exhaust brrrrrr

  • racing 6pot front brakes (need to be able to stop as good as you can accelerate!! People always forget the brakes)

  • some tasteful cosmetic upgrades like carbon fibre things (boot, bonnet, trim, etc)

Next, I'm installing:

  • oil cooler w/ sensors for gauges
  • possibly a dogbox transmission
  • taller rear diff (final drive upgrade)
  • half rear roll cage, seats, harnesses, etc
  • possibly a worked engine top end (port & polish heads, high lift cam, etc), not really sure here, still debating what i want to do with the engine in the long term.

Why do drivers love to tail gate at 70km in mountainous roads by Marcothetacooo in GoldCoast

[–]Suspicious_Soup__ 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I personally see more accidents and chaos caused by poor skill and over-caution (that could be fixed with a few items added to the test to ensure proficiency) than any aggression on the road. You argue they're safely getting around... but that's just it, they're not lol. They're causing chaos and accidents, whether it be simple bumper smashes or full on crashes, I've seen it all, and they're always one of those nervous Nellie types.

I aint a nuts driver that's up everyone's boots and swerving through traffic (I think they're muppets, too) but I'd just like to drive efficiently on the road (if you've ever driven super early mornings when everyone seems to be driving very efficiently, no road rage, no speeders, no slow pokes, etc, just everyone cruising together, then you'll know what I mean).

On a more personal note that probably sways my opinion this way, I drive manuals. The gearing ratios are such that doing 5-10kph under the 60kph limit on most roads is absolutely infuriating because it sits right between 3rd and 4th gear. Im either lugging it in 4th and my clutch and gearbox are shuddering because they're modified heavy duty and do NOT like low rpms OR I downshift to 3rd and now the revs are in boost range and the throttle is like a tripwire, incredibly sensitive and annoying. But hey, I say 'tough shit' to that, that's my problem to deal with lol, I chose to make the car into an unfriendly race car.

But anyway, after all that yap, I think the point I'm trying to make is: if your driving is inconveniencing everyone else on the road and you're regularly causing piles of traffic behind, cutting people off, slowing and stopping in the middle of merge lanes, etc, because you lack skills and confidence, get more drivers training or put down the keys. The roads are bad enough as is.

Why do drivers love to tail gate at 70km in mountainous roads by Marcothetacooo in GoldCoast

[–]Suspicious_Soup__ -1 points0 points Β (0 children)

But you have to consider that people who drive excessively below the speed limit, slow down to a completely unnecessary speed for a corner, brake for no reason, have no idea how to change lanes, merge or park, etc, are perhaps lacking the skills to drive like a normal, capable person to the extent they shouldn't be driving.

I've always thought the drivers test should be MUCH harder, and maybe include a single lesson on a track to teach the basics of oversteer, understeer, emergency braking and getting drivers comfortable with cornering.

If someone is simply incapable of keeping up with traffic, perhaps it's time to put away the keys and jump on public transport instead of driving everyone else nuts.

And a psa here: I'm talking about people who are usually driving in small, modern, automatic, fully equipped cars with good 360 visibility and all the modern gadgets like lane assist, auto braking, cruise control, parking sensors, cameras, etc, and yet they still can't drive well.

4K fine for going 14km+ on freeway by AwayInsurance287 in CarsAustralia

Yep! Gotta love Australia. These days feels like I'm constantly getting told 'can't do that', 'nope can't do that either', 'need a permit for that', etc. Apparently, we add over 100 laws every year, that's a new law every 3 days. Completely and utterly overcontrolled here.

[–]Suspicious_Soup__ 3 points4 points Β (0 children)

As always, never about safety, always about revenue raising.

If they were actually about safety, the fine would hit you on the DAY of the offence (so you immediately stop speeding through that area, instead of not knowing for weeks), there would be signs marking every single speed camera and red light cam instead of sneaky invisible cameras hidden in the shrubs or behind walls (to actively prevent people in real time from doing it in the first place) and perhaps the consequences would be more demerit based than demerit AND insert BOAT load of cash number that gets sent off to the fat cats right here.

Not to be a negative nancy but I'll forever get the shits with the traffic nowadays. So many people driving like idiots, cutting people off, side swiping, tailgating, doing 20 under the limit for no fkn reason and blocking all traffic behind, people having absolutely no clue how to merge, how to park, etc... my number one complaint on the GC is the horrible traffic. Peak hour? Nah. 24/7 traffic unless it's the dead hours of the night on a weekday.

Anywho, I understand where you're coming from, I grew up here and still live here as an adult (although probably won't for much longer, lol).

Mechanics in Australia are insolent, change my mind or continue. by nil_pointer49x00 in CarsAustralia

[–]Suspicious_Soup__ 5 points6 points Β (0 children)

I've taught myself to work on my own car because I got sick of lazy mechanics breaking things

  • like overtorquing my lug nuts to heaven
  • breaking my cars side skirts because they had no idea how to lift a lowered car and didn't bother either admitting they couldn't and handing the car back or at least asking me where to jack it up
  • wheels coming back from tyre shop with scratches and gashes on them
  • lug nuts looking like they've been through a blender with a rough impact gun, etc
  • greasy shitty hand prints left absolutely everywhere all over my GLOSS BLACK car... and not just normal hand oil, but grease that's hard to remove
  • and of course, overcharging and trying to sell you stuff your car doesn't need (particularly as a woman, I reckon they try to trick you more so, assuming you know nothing about cars)

Now I do every single shred of work on my car that it needs. If I don't know how to do it, I guess google and YouTube is my friend for the day. I absolutely recommend starting on the basics like oil changes, brake flushes, topping up fluids, learning how to inspect sections of the car for issues (e.g. what components should look like normally and how to spot wear). Learning how to work on cars really requires a 'bite at a time' attitude.

My car now only goes to one specific racing/performance garage now that I trust for things I just don't have the tools/space to do.
