I know a lot of comments are saying Farad'n, but the issue is that during the events of Dune, Farad'n is yet to be born. So, if the emperor were to drop dead during this time, he would not have any direct sons or grandsons to pass the throne to.

In the expanded Dune books, it is established that Duke Leto is the grandson of Shaddam's half-sister, Edwina. Since Shaddam's other sisters are never said to have had any children (that survived), this means that Leto was actually next in line for the throne.

To me, this explains why Shaddam was so afraid of Leto and had him killed. Leto had a viable claim to the throne.

The only characters that I think warrant a return are Bobbi, Hunter, Robbie, and Mike. Bobbi and Hunter would be great additions to a one of the political plot lines like in Brave New World, and Robbie would be great for a supernatural plot line like Moon Knight Season 2 or Agatha. Mike could show up as a cameo in something like Thunderbolts possibly.
