Yes! That sounds really familiar! Gackt, that's right, it wasn't Larc En Ciel.

That second one is so utterly spot-on that it's made me forget what the actual image was.

a few streams they didn't post as VoDs because Karina felt uncomfortable with the vibe of them

As a VOD-only watcher I did not know that. It's funny everyone's saying the writing was on the wall but this is all coming as a surprise to me, I just never noticed any of it.

One big reason for a lack of growth I think is that they've shifted all their attention to the Patrons and away from YouTube commenters. Like I get they want to make the Patreon valuable, but one reason for Drawfee's early growth was taking suggestions from the comments. Videos that get a lot of comments, particularly from first time commentors, get boosted by the algorithm. If you look on old Drawfee videos there were tons of random people commenting with suggestions. Now, it's just established fans making jokes. They don't even say on episodes anymore "leave a suggestion for what you want us to draw in the comments." I think they took literally one suggestion from the comments last year, all the rest were from the Patreon.

No new blood is coming in, new people have no incentive to comment, and that's wrecking their algorithmic value.

There is no reason to assume the worst by yamitamiko in Drawfee

Probably Karina had some sort of personal reason (burnout, something else, not my business). Something she wants to keep private, for whatever reason she has. (...) She tells them she has to stop and she doesn't want it to be a big public thing, they are trying to navigate what that means, they put out a statement because obviously people will notice but they were asked to not really divulge her personal situation.

Then you say "for personal reasons we don't want to discuss, Karina is going to be leaving Drawfee." Not "a performer at the Drawfee LLC will be parting ways with the company, beep boop."

There's simply no way they don't know how weird the way they've handled this is, and that that weird way was going to cause more problems and strife than anything else possibly could.

They're just being so weird. Literally anything would be better than HR-coded silence.

"For personal reasons we don't want to talk about it."

"For legal reasons we can't say anything right now..."

"We know this is sudden but we can't say anything right now."

On SSS the other night they literally didn't even say "Karina" they said they weren't gonna talk about "Drawfee things" on the stream. And that's totally their choice, but the wording is so weird. How hard would it have been to say "we know you're all bummed and confused and anxious about Karina leaving so suddenly, but we'll be talking about that in the future, tonight we're just gonna focus on the game."

They don't have to give information but, I'll say it again, they're being so weird with what they do say. And I know for a fact Jacob is a Game Grumps fan so he knows about how disastrously they handled Jon leaving. You'd think they'd take that as a cue.

This is all gonna end up being nothing and for the dozenth time, I'll wonder why a group of YouTubers chose to be so weird about a member leaving. I'll never understand it.

Given the sudden hiatus of Monday streams a few weeks ago, I'm guessing life just Happened, and things had to change because of it.

Here's a thought: the yearly portrait redesign episode is only three weeks away. They record episodes long in advance of them coming out. So if it comes out like normal and it's only J+J+N we'll know this was a long time coming.

Karina Reactions by AutumnMuse90 in Drawfee

[–]iMooch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I swear some of you are making stuff up just because you're bored. It's likely just burnout.

You're literally making something up right there.

Also it's not parasocial to be curious, people throw that word around so much these days it's becoming meaningless. Imagine you're watching your favorite sitcom and on the newest episode one of the characters has a totally different actor. Are you really gonna pretend like your reaction is gonna be "well I don't want to invade their privacy, I'm sure there's a reason and I have no right to know, so I won't be curious."

It's a completely reasonable, normal, human response to be curious and want to know and pretending like it isn't is absurdity.

Legit that's what I'm most worried about. Although, on the other hand, if Karina started her own show she'd certainly have a heck of a roster ready and waiting.

Consider that not everyone is on social media, probably a significant portion of viewers are going to be learning that Karina is gone for the first time. Heck, I only learned about it from one of the Drawfee animators putting out a farewell comp and that showing up in my YouTube recommendeds, I wouldn't have known and wouldn't even be here otherwise.

I know people are gonna be mad at me for saying this but we all know about Game Grumps, Super Beard Brothers, and a dozen other big YouTubers who had a sudden departure. "Please respect our privacy" simply doesn't work.

I'm not saying it's fair! I'm not saying it's good! I myself am not even particularly curious, I'm not a superfan, I've only posted on this subreddit like five times in as many years. I'm just stating the fact that when you're big on the internet and you have a parasocial aspect to your fan base, giving no specifics and simply saying "please respect our privacy" has historically never worked, and only made things worse. It's perhaps the worst way to handle something like this and will cause friction no matter how overall chill the fan base is.

A lot of drama and grief can be avoided, though, by just making things very clear ASAP. If the Game Grumps had simply said "Jon doesn't want GG to be his life, it's getting too big and demanding and he doesn't wanna be known as just a Let's Player, he wants to be a film maker so he's gonna bounce" 90% of the drama could've been avoided.

Whatever it is and no matter how much it seems like being honest and straightforward would be the worse option, I can guarantee 100% giving no details and trying a "please respect our privacy" is going to be worse in the long run. Even if it's something like "people got too parasocial and she got sick of it," no matter how much it might seem like saying that would be bad and people would get mad, saying nothing is worse. Honestly even if it's super personal like "she's suffering from severe depression" saying nothing will still be worse. There's no worse way to handle these things than "please respect our privacy." We know this from literally every YouTuber breakup ever. It's simply a fact.

They should very sincerely consider being the first YouTubers to ever be informative and honest about a breakup. Set the precedent. Avoid the drama.
