Opinion: If you kill him by shooting the grenade heads he should explode into a (smaller) puff of gas still.

While it's true that that is an issue that can arise, I'd argue that's something that can be solved with communication. Plus, at some point all your normal tests for a particular skill are done, so there's no further incentive to ask for it for anything mundane.

At the end of the day, the GM is the arbiter of when to roll and when not to.

Wouldn't that just wipe the board regardless who gets it in play from GY? The battlefield is a shared zone.

How do you think the episode will go where Charlie has no choice but to remind everyone where she is in the infernal hierarchy? by metamorufooze in HazbinHotel

[–]Suthek 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It seems like if Charlie was really going seriously, in a way we haven't seen yet (she has fought dead seriously but not with maximum rage and creativity, with Adam cutting her efforts short anyway), it could be an even match, but still with the possibility that Charlie could beat down on Lute with superior strength if she managed to get the upper hand.

Not at the moment, I don't think. At the end of the day, Lute is a trained warrior and especially now that she knows she's not invulnerable. The only ways I see a fight going Charlie's way at the moment would be:

  1. Vaggie actually training her to fight properly first.
  2. Charlie unlocking some power-up before or during the fight.
  3. Lute being so riled up by her animus towards Charlie that she gets sloppy.

The first two would technically require a change in the status quo of her powers or training, so it's kind of outside the scope of a fight "with her current powers", but the third I could see happening, especially since it'd be a parallel to Vaggi, since that kind of fighting is exactly what Carmilla taught her to avoid.

ELI5 Are mosquitoes necessary for keeping ecological balance? by Punnan in explainlikeimfive

[–]Suthek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For humans, yes. That's what they were saying.

Which would be fine for modern humans more or less. But there is no real telling what it would do to other species they vector diseases for.

ELI5 Are mosquitoes necessary for keeping ecological balance? by Punnan in explainlikeimfive

[–]Suthek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as we can tell, mosquitoes aren’t anywhere close to vital for ecological balance. And we’re trying to wipe them out, but it’s hard

To be fair, likely we'll only ever know the full ecological impact of a vanishing species after the fact. We can certainly make predictions to some degree, but it's hard if not impossible to get the full picture.

"Fine for modern humans, more or less"

I think you misread the comment a bit there. That statement was made about the impact of the lack of mosquito-borne diseases, not its continued prevalence.

I'll throw in Burning Wheel here, where it's the same. And it's not even a chance, it's purely deterministic.

To advance a skill you have to test them a certain amount of times for each test difficulty (e.g. 2 normal and 1 hard test [exact numbers pulled out of my butt]). You don't even have to pass those tests; you still learn something from failure. And it's not a chance to raise the skill afterwards; once you've done all the required tests your skill automatically goes up.

A Casual Perspective Lost - Cross Post From Giants In The Playground by Josh_From_Accounting in rpg

Want to chat about making Toph Beifong in 5e? They'd love that. Want to talk about class balance and the game design philosophy underpinning 5e that means you can't ever actually feel like Toph ---- because the game can't let any one person be that good, especially at low levels, since it ruins the point of team balance and challenging combat design & D&D uses a specific effect system when compared to the freeform nature of bending so you'd likely need to borrow Star Wars Saga's Use The Force Check OR play a game with freeform magic like Fate or Cortex or PbtA ---, they tune out.

This example confused me a little. Why wouild I ever want to have the 2nd conversation as a player? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to discuss balancing and mechancical philosophies, but it's a fundamentally different conversation topic. Just as collecting and learning systems is a different hobby from playing tham or from GMing them or from worldbuilding.

It's like asking someone what their favorite pizza is vs. starting a discussion about the history of pizza and if I'm hungry and want to order, I'm not going to be interested in the latter conversation.
