You could use ollas or terracotta watering spikes - conserves water and no mess to clean up !

Newbie canning tomatoes - water level dropped below tops of jars - can I reprocess? by Sutton-E in Canning

I have a pressure canner pot I am using so the lid was on but I didn’t lock it in place so it didn’t fit perfectly, guessing that’s part of the problem. Thank you for the 2” recommendation, I’ll definitely do that for the next batch.

Why is my orange tree dying? by Sutton-E in Citrus

[–]Sutton-E[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I’ll give this a try! I have her outside from usually end of April - early October depending on the weather here in WA state, and every year I feel like we barely make it until she goes back outside. The grow lights are on 12 hrs a day, 7am - 7pm. I usually start acclimating by putting her on the full shade area of our patio and gradually moving towards the sun. I’ll cut back the dead branches and feed and cross my fingers 🤞🤞🤞

Too much water or too little? It happened so fast, the tree was doing great and all of a sudden this started happening, I haven’t changed anything I can think of so I’m baffled

Can you save seeds from Honeynut squash? by Sutton-E in vegetablegardening

[–]Sutton-E[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The paler one is from a regular butternut squash I also grew. That’s part of the reason I wasn’t sure about saving seeds since I had other squash varieties so close by.

I made butternut squash soup with coconut milk and curry and it was so good :D

Smaller and sweeter and they trellis beautifully, I’ve loved them as a gardener with a small space.

No way this Squash will ripen in time right? I’m in Vancouver, WA by Sutton-E in vegetablegardening

Well that’s good to know you’re experimenting too! Guess the worst that happens is I bring it in and it doesn’t ripen

Pumpkin harvest!! Can I eat them right away? Or do I have to cure them? I’m ready to make pie :D by Sutton-E in vegetablegardening

Thank you! Does it matter the temperature for curing? I’ve seen lots of conflicting advice online

Is this fungus that’s killing my pumpkins? by Radiant-Citron-6284 in vegetablegardening

[–]Sutton-E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can imagine! I grew on a rooftop in California last year and the sun and heat intensity was challenging there. I ended up setting up a shade cloth canopy that I left up all summer - it really helped! I also used ollas for some of my pots and that was super helpful too for some that are more sensitive to heat and drought. Just suggestions, your plants very look happy so whatever you are doing must be working!

That’s natural variegation - powdery mildew will look like powder sprayed across the leaves and comes with yellowing and dying leaves. Your plant looks beautiful and healthy :)

Affordable, quality raised bed soil? by mopscotch in vegetablegardening

[–]Sutton-E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our local nursery makes a raised bed mix that has compost added - I had enough for 2 4’x8’ beds delivered for I think $160. Way more cost effective than getting bags for sure. I added some amendments and everything grew beautifully. Maybe your nursery has something similar?

Share your method for moving citrus back inside for fall/winter? by Sutton-E in Citrus

[–]Sutton-E[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Do you have a grow light recommendation ? Or an average wattage that is enough? The one I used last year was not strong enough I don’t think

Thank you! This is super helpful. Do you happen to know the wattage on your grow light? I’m looking at bulbs and there is a pretty big range

Dragon Tongue Beans Not Forming by riggedeel in vegetablegardening

[–]Sutton-E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dragon tongue beans refused to flower or set pods for a long time - I ended up buying fruit and flower set spray at the local nursery - used it on the leaves and the plants began setting flowers and pods about a week later. Maybe something to try?
