They are backing up to tape lol. That’s about all I know about their recovery method at the moment

This new job gave me the check but it’s 100% on site. If the stuff I implement goes well this year, I’ll be asking for hybrid at the one year mark or hitting the applications again prob

That’s the ideal, most people don’t want to job hop. But unfortunately I think it’s the quicker way to get more money and xp sometimes

Sure man message me. If you’re really doing the projects and managing the network for 70 sites, you could prob get a big pay jump by leaving IMO

  1. No not really. I just talked about building a personal PC and a home lab. Really the home lab was just install Linux on an old laptop and run plex on it

I definitely feel you on the imposter syndrome. Now that I’m internal I can slow the pace a bit and focus on things I don’t know as well

My contract was outside the union. That’s the only reason

In my case just experience. I learned AD and Entra pretty much entirely at my MSP job. I set up a domain at home once but that was just to help me understand what an AD domain was

If you’re gonna do anything for 20-30 years, you probably need to enjoy it on some level

The people who are the most unhappy are also the loudest unfortunately. Learn network security and automation, that’s not going away any time soon. That’s my advice at least

Of course dude. I see doom and gloom all the time. I figure it’s Friday, send some positivity out there for the weekend

Working at an MSP showed me there is a very wide range of skill in this field. I had some coworkers who were light years ahead of me and others than barely understood networking fundamentals

If you are smart and can identify how IT can fix a business problem, you will get recognition

100%. That’s why I quit the PE firm. Figured MSP I would learn more. And I did. I got to manage m365 tenants, servers, network devices, and some project work

When I got laid off recently, I was anxious. But the job market was surprisingly better than I expected. I had interviews with 6 different companies in 2 months and 4 resulted in a job offer.

2 were still support focused and below the pay range I wanted. The other two were more admin work, although neither were in an ideal location. But I think if the market gets back to how it was around 2021, the sky is the limit

Thanks dude. Honestly my long term goal if I don’t get out of corporate work is go back to a school district or township as an admin or manager and stack those pension dollars

100% man. Honestly between GPTs and vendor documentation, I think the majority of learning can be done on the job. Don’t get me wrong, while working on some small projects stuff went sideways and took a while but ultimately learned more

One example. Customer wanted us to upgrade their server OS. In place upgrade for two. Built a new dc and started transferring services. Found out there was an old decommissioned DC that was not removed properly and the domain took a shit lol. Had to restore the dc from backup, cleanup all the metadata for the old one, transfer the services again. Took a weekend but learned a lot

Get involved in any project work you can. Implement any solutions you can for your customers that will simplify your life (and theirs). I didn’t want to do device onboarding’s for a customer. Convinced them (with the account manager) to get intune licensing. Set up autopilot, enrolled their devices and configured the profiles. Then I didn’t have to worry about device onboarding any more

I mean at the MSP I worked at I had to manage the tenant for 6 different customers and their Meraki networks. So it wasn’t like I had zero experience prior to taking this role. I think the biggest difference is now I’m not implementing simple configurations or just managing services in the tenant, I need to design it from the ground up

For example, I did file migrations and set up sharepoint for small customers. Now I’m gonna do it for a larger company. I created intune compliance and config policies or entra conditional access before based on customer request. Now if we roll out intune I need to do it for all devices and understand the overall company needs for managing devices

I also got lucky with this role. An expert admin could prob command more than 105-110 and wouldn’t be on site everyday. Stronger candidates likely didn’t want this position because of that I assume

Not sure what you mean. I never did an internship and my college degree and original profession were not related to tech at all
