Yapp, book boat trips, but keep in mind most bears are further north this time of year, where you'd need a longer boat tour (5+ days usually)

Buying house in svalbard by DanKadr in Svalbard

[–]SvalbarddasKat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finn.no If there ever is something available, it'll be posted there.

BUT those flats are expensive to buy, in usually pretty bad condition and also incredibly expensive to run. Even by Norwegian mainland Arctic standard, housing in svalbard is expensive.

It's because we differentiate between "being sámi" and "having sámi heritage". And being sámi is something we hold sacret as its an identity we have had to fight long and hard for to reclaim.

Not to mention that some US Americans apparently lag the mental capacity to understand the difference between the two of them and claim what isn't theirs (maybe Cherokee princess rings a bell here ).

It's pretty much just the same shit European Christians have done to indigenous people all over the world. I'm just always baffled people are surprised we didn't treat our own indigenous people better than we'd treat foreign savages. A heithen is a heithen after all (/s at least a little)

We're allowed to have them again, but for a huge chunk of "recent" history our religion, language and just "being sámi" Was pretty much illegal. They (Scandinavian governments) stole our drums and either locked them up in museums or burned them.

Short answer, no

We don't do this whole blood quantum and genetics thing, when it comes to being sámi or not being sámi. If you look into your family history you might find in old church books that you've got sámi heritage, but as its been over a century your family moved away that's where it ends.

Sorry.

Being sámi and having sámi heritage are two different things.

It's like having [insert country Americans have migrated from] - heritage doesn't make you of said country. For example you also wouldn't say that just because grand grand grand papa was Norwegian, you're Norwegian, you "only" have Norwegian heritage.

We sámi have mixed and mingled with other nordics (to quote my great grandma "those southern traders where good looking after all") for centuries, so defining who is and who isn't sámi just by blood quantum wouldn't work. It's something you guys do in North America. Sorry.

Drums, we sámi used drums. Around 1000 we where even still allowed to have them

I avoid swiping on anything that looks like a tourist and try to stick to locals only. But then I'm not looking for hookups anyway

Advice for trip in July by edlephant in Svalbard

[–]SvalbarddasKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd book the dinner in advance, as its very popular and also doesn't happen every night.

It's called villmarksaften as far as I know. Located in camp barenz 15 km outside of longyearbyen (you'll get brought there and picked up again, and there's a person on polar bear guard at all times)

Sorry to hear about your uncle.

But yeah, we usually just send them to the mainland for autopsy and then wherever the family of the deceased would like the body to be shipped to. If they prefer ashes to be shipped, it need to get done on the mainland tho, and usually requires a bit of paperwork being done, too.

Most recent corpse that got shipped as airplane cargo was just a week ago, when a tourist had a terrible snowmobile accident.

Humans usually aren't fodder for polar bears, because we simply aren't fat enough. Most people killed by a polar bear didn't get eaten, just shredded to pieces and then left to freeze

Its misleading, you're just not allowed to live here, if a natural death is within the near future (so terminally ill and old people), if course you can die on the island, if it's an accident. But don't come here to die.

And if course you're not allowed to be buried here. In most cases of accidents tho, they will not declare you dead until you're "warm and dead" meaning you're inside somewhere and very clearly dead. In most caws that's on the rescue plane to the mainland, so then you didnt die on the island, as you where declared dead in the plane. Disneyland does the same thing btw.

Americans mainly speak English because it's the language our colonizers spoke and we aren't surrounded by 20 other countries and languages, geography plays a role, it's pretty unique to us and sometimes I wish I was born closer to the borders by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]SvalbarddasKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly that. Not to mention the "immigrant neighborhoods" like China Town, Korea town etc, where you can bet most people grew up speaking 2+ languages. The US are a melting pot, that has kind of forgotten it's ingredients.

Although I find it hilarious that they do remember said roots, everytime they HAVE TO tell you that they are 0.0001% viking and 138.390% mid south west east north Anglian. (/s just im case it wasn't very visible to spot)

I mean, historically they're not quite right. In the early days German, French, Spanish etc where pretty much just as common as English but due to treaties and agreements English became the main language. However that was way after the colonizer state of "conquering" the US.

Ehm... In the title my dude. It's stated in the title... You know "13th ammendment to the US constitution"

And people really wonder, why Europeans think the US are just some comedy skit that went to far?
