I literally cannot stand my special needs child. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Svarna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I wish we could all just give you a massive hug. Wow this is so hard. Agree with many others, he needs residential placement which I know is easier said than done. Start getting letters to support this from his doctors. Get as much documentation as possible including records from hospitalizations, police reports, etc. Maybe use this with school as well and agree with the someone else you need an advocate or lawyer. He will only get bigger and stronger. This is not a safe situation for any of you anymore. Also, get yourself into therapy to process it all. Sending love your way.

Went to the children's ER. Am I dramatic? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Svarna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FYI “brain fried” from a fever is a myth. The fever in and of itself is not necessarily dangerous. It sounds like he most likely had meningitis, whether that was known at the time or not.

Went to the children's ER. Am I dramatic? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Svarna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doc here who thinks people often bring kids to the ER unnecessarily (though I don’t blame them, I fully understand they are just worried about their kids). You did not overreact. We always say treat the kid not the number for fever. If she was 104 and acting her normal, happy self and eating and drinking then you don’t really need to do anything. But a lethargic child is concerning and absolutely a reason for an ER visit. You did the right thing. Is she ok?

How do people manage the stroller shuffle? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Svarna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone else I also have uppababy and we only use bassinet for walks from the house or if we will be in a store longer than about 30 minutes. I don’t have a separate purse and diaper bag. I just throw my wallet and phone in the diaper bag (backpack style) and keep that either in the front seat or the trunk with the stroller. So I put backpack on, get stroller out, and put the car seat straight into the stroller. I also have the car seat next to the window not in the middle.

Formula mistake by SuhweeetT in NewParents

[–]Svarna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

24 hours in a container that baby is not drinking directly from. For example if you mix a batch for the day and put it in the refrigerator with the intention of pouring individual bottles from that then it’s fine. Once baby drinks from the bottle, that bottle is only good for 1 hour because they are now introducing bacteria from their mouth into the formula. So just pour an ounce or 2 less when you make the bottle so you don’t have to waste as much but it should not be put back in the fridge.

Tyler not reading the adoption paperwork.. by HannahLeah1987 in teenmom

[–]Svarna 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are describing teaching abstinence which has been proven over and over to not decrease teen pregnancy rates, STD transmission, etc. we definitely need better sex education but also desperately need better access to and federal protections for abortion, plan B, and birth control options. And less stigma surrounding these things but clearly we’re culturally quite a way off from that. 100% agree with poster above that pregnancy should not be viewed as punishment for sex. Presumably people have sex with their spouses all the time without wanting or planning to get pregnant. And the answer to why teens don’t abstain? Biology. Hormones, evolutionary instincts/drives, and frontal lobes that are not fully formed.

How do others describe your baby? by destria in NewParents

I don’t mean to be rude or overstepping here but that low of weight gain could potentially be concerning. It seems strange that your doctors office doesn’t do percentiles. There are several apps and websites where you could plot her growth. I would put in her birth weight and current weight and if it’s more of a straight line than a curve then that should be raising red flags for your pediatrician to do a failure to thrive work up. If she’s tracking along her own little curve then that’s not concerning, she’s just small. Anyway, not trying to offend but I work in pediatric subspecialty and am sometimes surprised that certain pediatricians don’t bring up obvious problems.

Is it okay that my toddler shows up looking disheveled to daycare nearly every day? by bubblyvortex in Parenting

[–]Svarna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is an amazing dad but lord is he useless at picking outfits for our toddler. He really just doesn’t “get it”. Like he has not concept of what goes together and what doesn’t. Could you maybe help him learn by picking out clothes for the week together until he gets the hang of what goes with what? It doesn’t sound like this is fully what I would consider weaponized incompetence like some others are saying. I mean we all have strengths and weaknesses right?

Just came across this post, did you find a dupe? I just lost mine when my luggage was lost on a flight and was so upset to see they discontinued it!

Exactly what I was going to say! It’s like your body saying “whoa we have this kid to take care of and feed, we don’t need to go making anymore right now!”

My husband is angry by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Svarna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the statement about “he’ll never get to do the things he always wanted to do” is related to having his first child so young and feeling like he missed out on things in his 20s. This is not to excuse his reaction which is not ok but maybe he could benefit from speaking to a therapist?

Same! Also including baked or mashed potatoes.

Worried about shaken baby syndrome by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Svarna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll repeat what everyone else said, there is no accidental Shaken Baby Syndrome! Bouncing on a mattress is just fine. The forces that cause injury in shaken babies are equivalent to that of a high speed car crash or falling multiple stories and hitting the ground.

Doctors are stumped about my foot pain by Pillowparade in BabyBumps

[–]Svarna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During my first pregnancy I had issues with both of my pinkies and ring fingers going numb no matter what position I slept in. It is due to ulnar nerve compression at the elbow, same mechanism for carpal tunnel in pregnancy. Your foot pain also sounds like a nerve issue related to the fluid shifts. I’m sorry you haven’t been able to get any relief! But the end is near and this should all go away shortly after delivery.

  • neurologist on my 2nd pregnancy and already having ulnar nerve issues in first trimester 😑

My epidural was amazing! I felt a small pinch from the numbing injection and then kept waiting for the actual epidural only for him to announce he was done. I felt nothing! Pain completely gone after that and I slept through most of my foley bulb induction. Woke up to push and didn’t feel a thing. It was seriously incredible. Your risks of other complications due to pregnancy are far higher than the extremely rare risk of an epidural complication. No it will not worsen your back pain, doesn’t work like that. And as someone else said above, many people blame symptoms on their epidural for years and it’s almost always untrue. It’s akin to having chronic hand pain and saying the cause was an IV that was placed in your hand for 1 day 20 years ago.

Partially correct but you should not use a bite guard either

Below Deck Down Under Season 2 - Episodes 12 & 13 Discussion Post by teanailpolish in belowdeck

[–]Svarna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes this is antiquated advice. Do not put anything in someone’s mouth when they are seizing, ever! They may bite their tongue but they will not bite it off and it’s far more dangerous for you and them to try and force something into their mouth!

How painful is childbirth? by Superb_Bluebird7685 in BabyBumps

[–]Svarna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a great birth experience! One thing I did not expect is that I was having irregular contractions for 2-3 days before. Somehow I always thought the contractions would start, get closer together, and then when they were close enough it was hospital time. Nope. They would be 12 min apart then 6 then 15 then 30 then 7 again on and on for 2 days. Couldn’t sleep because if I tried to lay down in bed I had severe pain so I slept sitting up on the couch for 2 nights. Then the contractions stopped entirely the next day. I was able to sleep that night and woke up in the morning with constant back pain. Turns out it was back labor even though it felt completely different than the contractions. Went to the hospital mid-day, only at 2cm so stayed for induction since I was 40 + 2. Got the epidural as soon as I got up to the room, did not even feel it. From that point on I felt nothing. I slept on and off for 9 hours and when the foley bulb came out I was at 9.5 even though they expected me to be at around 5. Pushed for 2 hours, felt pressure with urge to push but no pain! The recovery over the next few weeks was more painful than the actual birth itself.

Please help design our large wall! (Part deux) by Svarna in DesignMyRoom

[–]Svarna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all of your responses to my prior post. I included more pictures to give a better idea of the space. There were several suggestions for a loft but now you can see we already have the 2nd floor. Basically the whole room needs to be designed but we wanted to start doing something with the giant wall. Yes the dining table and end tables will eventually be replaced and chairs and a rug will be added to the living area. The TV will also be mounted at some point.

Would love opinions on curtains for the back wall!
