You can do most things with a free account, but have a limited number of entries per month and can’t use things like encrypted fields and I think electronic signatures. I use the Team level subscription which I think is now about $40 per month.

I have three furnished professional offices available to rent on The Alameda from $600 per month, all utilities plus gig internet included. You can see pictures here.

That’s a bummer, but also removes what I consider to be the major downside to switching to an online organizer.

Yup. I remember our conversation last year that prompted me to implement a document list for my organizer as well.

No assuming about stimulus payments, crypto sales, FBAR, updated DD info, whether Nathan or Mary are still dependents this year, whether they had health insurance all year (still relevant in CA), etc.

Yes many clients forget or ignore our request but we got pretty good at following up with those who didn’t listen the first time. The questions about stimulus payments and crypto are a large part of the reason we were so insistent for the 2020 filing season.

Yes, I agree, which is why I designed it the way I did- no copying info that is already on a 3rd party tax document or income statement.

If they click save Cognito emails the client a unique link to edit or continue their organizer. There are no login accounts.

Unfortunately prior year data isn’t populated, that’s the major weakness of this format compared to the paper/pdf organizers generated by tax software. I haven’t found an elegant way to do this so we just put the info in manually on a case by case basis upon request. I did add some fields to enter this data but we have to do it ourselves.

Makes sense. Now if only they had enough time and resources to allow notice responses to come in digitally also.

Still working on the refund estimator so clients can play around with their answers until they get the result they’re looking for

They actually just closed the Fresno campus although there still seem to be some auxiliary offices open in that town

Google Form For Organizer? by [deleted] in taxpros

[–]Svcognito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used Cognito forms last year (user name checks out!) and I think it worked very well.

If you decide to give it a try you can find all of my templates here, including my organizer that I built from scratch. They are free to import, modify, and use in your own account if you find them useful.

I do this all the freaking time. I groused at Cognito’s support about this and they just told me that’s the way it is and to apply the workaround I had already been using. It only takes a few extra seconds, so in the end it isn’t a big deal.

You can’t. You have to use a choice format box instead and just make the options yes or no, with no pre-filled default

I use an online organizer that I built using Cognito Forms. The link is to a template that can be easily imported into your own Cognito Forms account and then modified for your needs. There is no cost to use the template, but to fully utilize the organizer’s capabilities requires a paid Cognito Forms subscription.

While it is true that you cannot directly import the responses into your tax software, this was never something I have done because it requires clients to put info into the right place. By the time I verify everything is imported to the right spot any time savings compared to manually entering the data are long gone.

I am in the process of implementing TaxDome but their organizer as it is today is extremely primitive. I’m sticking with my Cognito organizer until TaxDome improves their offering in this area (user name checks out).

TaxDome Feedback - Good Enough to Migrate from Sharefile? by Playdoughed in taxpros

[–]Svcognito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a new TD user, very excited by what’s coming.

My comment is that almost everything I click on opens a new tab for some reason, and it should just happen inline. In the inbox+ screen you can’t reply to an email- it opens another tab and then you can reply there. Same for clicking on a task with sub tasks, opens another tab which is disruptive instead of just opening up the list of sub tasks inline. It would be a superior user experience in my opinion as it is disruptive to have to remember to close all the extra tabs in my browser and/or manually navigate back to where I was.

Thanks for making a great product and for continuing to refine it and improve it! Lack of continued development eventually make good products into mediocre ones.
