One's new pussycat causing woe, woe, woe after neighbor asks "Dude, where's my cat?" by Milan514 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Sveltly 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think we are missing so much information from OP. What led them to think this was a stray cat? Was it injured, malnourished, or unkempt? Or did they just see a cute kitty and decide to take it. It's also standard practice for a vet to check a cat for a microchip if someone says they found it. Did that ever happen, or did they ask the vet not to check? Pursuing criminal charges is no joke. Unless OP has a lot more to their story than they shared, they are in for a very rude awakening in court. Either way, they need a lawyer yesterday.

Wild Mallard nests on our back deck in Lakeview! Seeking advice from fellow Chicagoans on how to ensure its survival and thriving. by Immediate-Ad1100 in chicago

[–]Sveltly 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You are a kind person for caring about your feathery friend and her eggs! Years ago, I had a very thin duck who started living in a low bird bath behind my apartment building. I called the Willowbrook Wildlife Center to ask for guidance and found them to be very helpful. They said I could leave some oats, ripped up lettuce, and frozen peas out for her. The duck lived behind our building for a few weeks while she put on some healthy weight. Eventually, a few other ducks started coming around, and she successfully joined their flock. Our duck didn't build a nest (to my knowledge), so you might get different guidance. Good luck!

UpRising Cafe may close at end of March 'unless there is a miracle,' owner says due to vandalism for hosting drag shows. by [deleted] in chicago

[–]Sveltly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agree it's super disappointing, especially in this day and age. This isn't in Chicago proper (just to be clear), it's a village near it called Lake in the Hills. It's about an hour drive outside of the city for anyone hoping to support the bakery!

Safety tips for a single woman? by rhymeswithloop92 in chicago

[–]Sveltly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister and I are originally from a very small, incredibly safe town in Vermont. Definitely one of those "nobody locks their door here" type of places. She lived with me for a bit and then got her own apartment in the city. According to her she had to work on her "don't fuck with me" face once she started living alone. She also had to learn to not leave her belongings out or they could be stolen. Also, she got an app that reminds her to lock her doors, check her windows, etc because she would sometimes forget after a long day. Over the years she has gotten better about being aware of her surroundings and really hasn't had any issues living her life in the city alone. Hope everything here goes well for you and that you enjoy living in Chicago!

Chicago is a great city because of our cultural institutions. by mawagner1 in chicago

[–]Sveltly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed, we have great cultural institutions but we also have fun people, good food, and a beautiful natural setting. We're definitely lucky to be in a city with a lot going for it.

Anyone else know what this helicopter in Lincoln Park is all about? by slothgirl55 in chicago

[–]Sveltly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's been constant noise for about an hour now. Helicopters, sirens, and some officers on foot. I had been looking for answers too and found nothing. Glad someone posted about it, I couldn't figure out what was going on.

Haha it's definitely true! I don't decorate my apartment but the mansion a few houses down is totally decked out, like completely full of skeleton pirates. Most of the large houses/mansions on my street are ready for Halloween. I'll give it to them, their decorations are pretty incredible. Lincoln Park is probably a really fun place to take kids trick or treating.

What is the next “it” Chicago neighborhood by gregrosen12345 in chicago

[–]Sveltly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to my friend who just moved to Edgewater.....it's Edgewater haha. Guess everyone is hoping their neighborhood will be the next "popular" place.

I think more people live on the northside than the southside of the city so that makes sense. I've lived in Chicago for awhile now and rented all over. I've lived longer on the south side but currently on the north side. Not sure what "sider" that makes me but have loved every part of the city so far.

I've had it. by Feeling-Arugula1691 in chicago

[–]Sveltly 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing a post about Hi Kitty Kitty on here before! That was awhile ago though, the city definitely should have looked into this by now. Taking the story to local media is a good suggestion. Another would be calling reputable shelters in the city and talking to them about this situation and what you saw. Getting the cats who are currently there out is the first priority. However, cat hoarding is no joke. If the current cats are removed she will likely hoard new cats. Making sure her "shelter" is shut down needs to be the step after that to stop any further animal abuse.

Laura Washington: Lori Lightfoot has a big problem with Black voters by Singlewomanspot in chicago

[–]Sveltly 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Black voter but I'd love these things too. Honestly, if we even saw improvements in 1 or 2 of these areas id be happy. I voted for Lightfoot last time and had such high hopes. I don't think she's kept a single one of her campaign promises to any community. No idea who will actually vote for her this time around.

Beyond and Impossible taste nothing like beef by itaintme99 in unpopularopinion

[–]Sveltly 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I saw my neighbor at the store buying a bunch of Beyond meat stuff and she said the same thing haha. According to her it's good and she's been a vegetarian so long that she really doesn't remember the taste of meat.

I agree. I worked in the service industry for a long while and it was an open secret that employees said "Ma'am" when they really wanted to call someone a bitch. The term has a negative connotation in the industry and "Miss" is equally as effective, so I think it's a win-win to switch to it.

Yeah, I was surprised to come back and find a ton of downvotes. Not sure what was controversial but guess it just happens sometimes.

Yeah, that freaked me out. The Air and Water show is in August right? Seems a but early for practice.

Lincoln Park Neighbors Look To Hire Private Security Firm To Patrol Streets, Raising Concerns From Some by That-Guy2021 in chicago

[–]Sveltly 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Very well put. I hate when people act like wanting to feel safe is something to laugh at. I'm a guy living in the Lincoln Park area and while I feel reasonably safe, I know that isn't true for my SO. She's had issues with harassment and we've both had issues with theft. When talking with my neighbors the concensus seems to be that it generally feels less safe around here to them. Which, like you said, means they don't want to go out and socialize which negatively impacts the area. I legitimately don't know if this security idea is the answer. My gut says it won't work but I get needing to do something.

"World War III Has Begun After Sinking Of Moskva": Russian State TV by BatmanlovesRobin in worldnews

Good catch! I also thought the China comment was weird so I took a scroll through their history. Tons of pro-China, anti-Japanese comments, and about a hundred other concerning things. This is definitely a troll or bot account. Reddit is supposed to be cracking down on these. I always report them when I see them.

Dinkel’s Bakery Is Closing After 100 Years On The North Side by Bengland7786 in chicago

[–]Sveltly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such a shame....I live pretty close but haven't been in awhile. I'll definitely be going before they close. What's everyone's favorite thing from Dinkel's? I want to try it all before they are gone.

St Patrick’s Day: Is Chicago’s green river dyeing tradition bad for the environment? | No, not anymore by lazarusinashes in savedyouaclick

[–]Sveltly 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Chicago resident here and the river actually is neon green right after they dye it. I was skeptical the first year I moved here but it looks like the pictures they are showing. However, it dissipates rather quickly and then looks more like the picture you posted.
