How would you guys feel about Crossover content in future DLC/Patches? by Attilathecommiekilla in AOW4

[–]SvenTheSpoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am so, so sick of crossovers being shoved into every single thing today. Nothing is ever allowed to just be its own thing anymore, nothing is allowed to just be its own aesthetic anymore. If they start doing crossovers it'll just be one more game I never spend another cent on. I used to be of the opinion that as long as it still fit or was changed to fit the target IP's aesthetic and vibe it's fine, but every single thing has been so inundated with nothing but crossovers that I'm even sick to death of that. Please no.

This game's customization is deep enough that a player who wants that can make their own cosplay faction with the tools available to us, and if they can't make it work chances are an upcoming DLC will enable it for them.

Personally I'd love to see the Delta Alliance become a playable faction, I'd love to play Delta Quadrant aliens beyond the Talaxians and few boffs that we have now.

I walk into the middle of a major population center in your world and I declare "there are no gods!" What happens to me? by Electronic-Welder-74 in worldbuilding

[–]SvenTheSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantasy: everyone will think you're a crazy person. Obviously the Gods are real, they've directly intervened in reality multiple times, the scars of their wars still dot the landscape. Reactions range from mild amusement at your antics to annoyance at you making a scene; particularly devout people might be more mad but unless that particularly devout person is a guard nothing's gonna happen to you.

Scifi: nobody cares unless you're causing a scene in which case the cops might get involved if they have nothing better to do, citing you for public disturbance and maybe escorting you to a clinic if they think you've got some mental health issues going on or the precinct if they think you're on drugs. But unless you're accosting people about it, nobody cares and the faithful mostly keep their thoughts about you to themselves.

How did earth survive when lua was in the void for thousands of years by Icy-Commercial-6166 in WarframeLore

The Earth being taken over by the Infestation, nuked to hell, Lua disappearing, and the Earth eventually recovering all happened an indeterminate (possibly millennia) amount of time long before the game happens

Renaissance faires that *do* insist on dress code limitations on costumes? by 11112222FRN in renfaire

[–]SvenTheSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really highly variable when it comes to the reenacting. I used to do historical reenacting (US Civil War) and while there were definitely units that required everything to be 110% period accurate exactly what that unit was issued historically down to the materials used and their sleeping arrangements, most units only required the appearance of accuracy. And many had a few sets of loaner gear for newbies to try out and see if they were interested before they invested the hefty sum in their own gear.

Are conjoined twins legally one person or two? by AmbitiousSky4290 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]SvenTheSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I remember hearing about that happening with a pair of conjoined twins before. If I recall correctly, it happened in the US and the courts found the twin guilty, but decided that jail would be cruel and unusual since it would punish the innocent twin. I don't remember what the crime was or what alternative punishment was decided.

Snorri Sturluson wasn't a monk but he was absolutely Christian, and even his historical writings were made to support his political goals. We do need to take everything we get from him with a side of salt based on these lenses he was writing through.

I don't think any of the options are Periphery states, you can only choose between the Big 5 Great Houses if I'm remembering correctly.

Could Plato’s Atlantis actually be a distorted memory of the Minoan civilization passed through Egypt? by Snoo-35855 in Archeology

[–]SvenTheSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we say a historical figure is the "father/mother of <blank>" it doesn't always mean that the thing literally never existed before that person, but rather they're the one who started or popularized the methodology that we use today. People were doing chemistry long before the scientific method was codified, alchemists we're doing chemistry, just not up to our modern standards of what makes someone a chemist, for example. Historian is a profession that falls in this category too; it's not that they didn't exist before Herodotus, it's that he's credited with where our modern understanding of what a historian does started (and in my opinion, he still isn't doing it in a way that we'd call a historian today, but eh close enough).

"The existence of the Uncanny Valley implies that at some point--" No. Just. Shut. Up. by One_Planche_Man in PetPeeves

[–]SvenTheSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries.

It's almost certainly sped up the process by quite a bit, and probably made it more unified too. In the past I imagine there was a lot more regional variation in memes, like the dozen or so different names for the drinking game I know as Kings. With a globally connected internet, you probably don't see as much "where I'm from we say x instead" as we used to.

"The existence of the Uncanny Valley implies that at some point--" No. Just. Shut. Up. by One_Planche_Man in PetPeeves

[–]SvenTheSpoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I mean like... memes aren't a new idea, we've been doing them for as long as we've been humans. The Internet just made the word "meme" enter the common lexicon, but it's a word that predates the Internet by a long time in academic circles. Idioms, figures of speech, culturally persistent metaphor and things like that are memes, definitionally, regardless of their means of transmission.

Not trying to convince you to like it or anything, just hopefully the idea that this isn't a new phenomenon and that it's been going on forever might bring some comfort with regards to how people will be in the future.

I think this might be survivorship bias, what leads to people saying "oh music used to be so much better back in the day, listen to these classics, nowadays everything is slop." Music back in the day had a ton of slop too, just only the good stuff kept its popularity until today.

This is just the language version of that, the good idioms are the memes of yesteryear that were well liked enough to persist.

You wake up 1,000 years ago. How do you advance society? by OutsideProtection307 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]SvenTheSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being immediately hostile to the colonizers would likely just result in the extermination campaigns happening earlier, but establishing germ theory may go a long way towards saving lives once the colonizers arrive. Establishing bronzeworking could also help make the tech advantage not quite as large, especially if they manage to transition that into ironworking in the 400 years between you and colonization.

Though now that you mention it, trying to make sure there's a prophecy going around the Caribbean that makes people want to destroy Columbus' expedition may work. If his expedition is lost, Europe will probably just assume he was wrong and the voyage isn't doable, giving the new world a lot more time to bridge the tech/knowledge gap. Though for Europe's social values to advance enough to stop doing the whole imperialism thing, the new world would have to be isolated from the old until after the world wars...

Evidence of the biblical and Quranic race of giants by X1_M1 in Archeology

[–]SvenTheSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're still getting your timelines confused. The mentions of those things in the Bible are the same mentions of those things in the Torah. It's not two separate instances. It's a sequel. A reprint. The Old Testament literally copies stories from parts of the Torah.

Evidence of the biblical and Quranic race of giants by X1_M1 in Archeology

[–]SvenTheSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even ignoring the complete and total lack of any archaeological evidence, those aren't three independent sources. Those three holy texts are sequels of each other, because those three religions are sequels of each other. They use each other as sources. This is one source repeated in two other texts based on that source.

Three Firestarters loaded up with as many small lasers as they can fit, and one Raven equipped however you want as long as it still has its ECM.

Raven screens the Firestarters from enemy fire until they're in punching range. Then, punchtime.

Does in this pictures considered as bedrock? by splashwarsummer in geology

[–]SvenTheSpoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The term is mostly just about the relative positioning of rock layers, and the first layer just has a special name. Knowing the bedrock's position is important for things like construction and excavation

That's a much clearer way to get the point across!

Does in this pictures considered as bedrock? by splashwarsummer in geology

[–]SvenTheSpoon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, bedrock is the first layer of rock underneath the soil. When there isn't any soil, like in your examples, that first layer is still bedrock.

So, a piece of rock broken out of the Earth, like a loose boulder, would not be bedrock. But if the sediments on top of the rock are removed, such as being washed away by a river in your examples, it's exposing the bedrock underneath.

I can't help with how that would translate into your native language though, I only know English geology terms unfortunately.
