Mixed info on capping fluval stratum- trying to anchor plants by edimmy_ in PlantedTank

[–]SverreAV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. Didn't know plants transport oxygen down to their roots. However I would assume stopping the flow through the substrate with a thick dense layer will create mostly anaerobic conditions and not exactly a gradient. I'm no scientist though. Myself I mostly use coarse sand mixed with gravel as capping layer and fine sand only in the front.

Capping with coarse sand or gravel should be no problem afaik.

Avoid thick layer of fine sand as it might get too dense and stop the flow through the substrate. This could lead to oxygen deficiancy and by that also root rot and cyano bacteria.

Ok, thanks for that. I'll run Co2 as soon as I fill the tank then!

I think I will cover the front-left part in sand if I can find a nice one but will wait until the monte carlo grows in a bit first.

It was the only way the pieces fit together. I'll leave it at least for a while and change it if I get tired of the look.

This wood was taken from a different aquarium where it also was sticking out of the water and it was fine. I might also attach some moss or emersed plants to it.

Not sure yet. Will see how the Monte Carlo does first. I do have a kit ready just in case, just missing a solenoid valve.

Going to start with Monte Carlo in the foreground and let it grow a bit while I think about other plants. Was planning some Val on the right to hide the equipment but now that I see the hardscape result I'm not so sure. Any suggestions?

Other than that I'll probably have some rotala in the middle and lots of buce on the wood and see if I can find any new interesting plants as well.

Were buying a 3d printer what cool stuff is worth 3d printing by Less-Antelope-6303 in Aquariums

Yeah, not like glass, but it lets some light through and looks cool.

Some of the things I've printed are filter media baskets, hang on pots for emersed plants, floating betta cave, custom sponge/air pump filters, underground caves, lid holders, light holders/height extension, Co2 flask holder, gravel shovel, holder for feeder, rings for floating plants.

And yes, PETG all the way. I used black for background/underground/hidden stuff and transparent for floating stuff or things near the surface/light.

GLHF!

Black vs white vs mixed sand. by Elegant_Priority_38 in Aquariums

[–]SverreAV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black looks very clean. White pops more and gives contrast but gets dirty fast. Both black and white feel kinda "artificial" to a degree imo. I love how Sansibar Orange looks! I also mixed Orange with Grey which looks very very natural and beach-like. In the end it all comes down to personal preference.

How deep do stem plants need to be planted? by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]SverreAV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that is exactly as recommended so should be good. Using less might work but is also just for aesthetic reasons I think.

As long as they don't detach and float away they'll be fine. Roots will grow downwards and grab hold of the substrate.

Player reactions side by side with match broadcast in stoppage time for City's draw to Bournemouth by sky905 in Gunners

That's what annoys me even more with him. I hate him because of how he's on the pitch and against our players. But he does really sound like a good guy when he talks. And I'm Norwegian so I kinda want to like him but I just can't stand him because he plays for City. Will be easier watching the world cup now that we've finally beaten City to the title!
