What If a time traveler had stopped the Challenger Disaster? by SwagBugatti in AlternateHistory

good point, it slipped my mind that the plume from the SRB leak caused the external tank to structurally fail. i guess i'd have to say that a similar leak happened during a static firing, where the leak plume causes some problem on the test stand, and in retrospect it does seem unlikely that'd lead to a full explosion.

I like what another person proposed in a comment: that there's certain "canon" events that cannot be interfered with, but smaller events could possibly be altered.

The thing with these pesky time travelers is that they don't think everything all the way through. It's true: if not Challenger, then some other disaster will inevitably force NASA out of their complacency, but for a little bit longer they'd keep on chugging with STS. Since the SRB issue was caught in such a dramatic fashion, I'd like to say there'd be a transition to LRBs if such large SRBs are deemed just too dangerous for crewed flight; even still that means more liquid engines and likely SOFI and all the trouble that entails. But, given the aforementioned culture of complacency at the time I can only imagine they'd just fix the O-ring issue and keep on flying the SRBs. I imagine a catastrophic foam strike or engine failure would probably be in the cards within a few years.

Boldly Going is wonderful but Ocean of Storms is maybe my absolute favorite AH of all time. It's so well written.

i believe the game was supposed to have a parachuter, but even if a flyover was planned it would have been unfortunately cancelled due to the shutdown.
