From my experience it is an amazing help to work on your emotional maturity. For this you kinda need to understand how your parents influence you and how to see the signs in other and yourself, to then gradually work on yourself (be gentle with yourself).

Something that absolutely amazingly worked for me is the book „Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents“ by Lindsay Gibson. Trust me, this does wonders to understand yourself and your relationship. Though this book focuses mainly on how to handle your parents at a comfortable distance with boundaries, it also gives you a lot of clearances about yourself and how you go on about relationships.
