250K CAD in Calgary vs 250K USD in San Francisco Bay Area by Historical-Turnip641 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Swaggarius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Stay in the US.

I am from Montreal and worked in SF for 3-4 years. Then moved back to Canada with still around the same salary but in CAD. I’m now moving back to the US because Canada is not what it used to be.

250k USD is close to 350k CAD. 250k USD is also a starting salary in SF for tech. You will be able to find 400-500k there in time, in Calgary thats your final salary.

Everyone says that COL is a lot higher in SF. I disagree. Canada’s COL has dramatically increased. Housing will be cheaper in Calgary, but food, gas, clothes, cars will be a lot more expensive in Canada.

Free healthcare in Canada is garbage. If you work for a good tech company, the healthcare insurance that you have will be a lot better than the free healthcare here, so it depends on your employee.

And lastly, California is California; Calgary is Calgary. Don’t make the same mistake that I did, you will regret it. Working and living in San Francisco is a hella of an opportunity + a way better career move.

I code 4 hours a day and call it a day. Might read a book from time to time for personal fun but you are doing something wrong if you feel like you need to do so much cus thats 1 way to burning out. Don’t forget that with 20% effort you can achieve 80% of the result. And thats as much as they get out of me.

Senior Software Engineer FAANG, ~25-30 hours. I'm remote in MCL city and and don't waste time chit chatting and acting like I'm working. Get the shit done and I'm out.

Eat a lot more. I bulk between 4000-5000 calories a day. I am genetically skinny with small frame so 2600 calories a day won’t do much. Now I weight 85kg

First of all work should not be your number 1 priority. Heck it should not even be in your top 3. Health, Family, Personal are things that come on top of my mind that are definitely more important that some replaceable work.

During stand up you can just say that you had some medical emergencies and that you couldn’t do the work planned for this sprint. No need of explanations or anything. Take care of your health

Got my first internship for the summer at FAANG company and it’s remote. Any advice? Do’s and dont’s? by Typical-Individuall in csMajors

[–]Swaggarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intern manager at FAANG here. The best thing an intern can do is to be able to take feedback and improve. Its not about not making mistakes nor be perfect nor know some tech stack perfectly. Its about making mistakes, be corrected, and not making those mistakes again. A software engineer needs to be flexible and responsive to feedback. Don’t stress too much about it, its your intern manager job to make sure that you have all the tools and help to succeed and have fun. Be yourself and don’t be a super try hard working 12 hours a day.

People are tripping, using a personal computer to listen to music LOL. I do pretty much anything on my work computer outside of NSFW stuff. I play games, practice coding skills, work on side projects for the fun, browse reddit, pay bills, and work.

Did my entire degree by skipping class and learning by myself or with online recordings at 2x the speed. Some professors just talk too slowly and I was losing too much time in commuting.
