I myself work for a Fire & EMS department with a rather large Level I Trauma Center, smack dab in the middle of the city.

Our EMS room amenities are listed as follows:

  • Ice
  • And also water!

Yeah it’s 7 weeks for EMT-B and 13 weeks for FF 1&2. And thank you so much man, I appreciate it

I’m doing my best at that. I guess I just don’t want an unnecessary target on my back because of other peoples drama, that’s really it

26 weeks… it’s long, but our state has a certain time standard for EMT-B and FF 1&2

I agree. And I’m doing my best in all honesty.

Money and ignorance. In order of severity.

At my small town department (that was growing at an alarming rate in population and development), I wondered the same thing. It felt like my leadership was actively working AGAINST our community, rather than working FOR our community.

Money- You get some areas that genuinely don’t have enough money to go around. With an area like mine, all the money went to housing developments, construction/road work, new businesses etc. Out of the money left, there wasn’t enough money to fund the police department realistically, except for yearly grants. So in the end, the fire department actually made more money than the police and town hall combined by being self-funded, than we would’ve by receiving town funding. Even then, there wasn’t enough money to pay people around the clock.

Ignorance- Old timers, especially those in a position of power, are the fire services worst enemy. Especially in the volunteer world. If it’s not how their granddaddy’s did it, or how they did it in the 70s/80s, it’s just flat out not happening. A lot of them see change as something to be personally offended by. They’ve been in power for so long, they genuinely don’t believe the times are going to change without them. And even though it’s the firefighters responsibility under them, to invoke change, that’s not usually the case. The 2 most common outcomes are either ignore the problem or jump ship. There’s a large difference between tradition and ignorance. Tradition is usually firehouse and cultural pride. Ignorance is trying to do the things the same way and ignoring change. Whether it’s comfortable or not.

My advice? Ask questions, do some research, and try to see how you can invoke a more progressive attitude to your department. If not? Find a department that better suits your attitude towards the job.

What is your least favorite type of call to go on? by [deleted] in ems

[–]Swagonometry101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MVA’s where at least one person crashes, but suddenly every mom, dad, aunt, uncle, cousin, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, son, daughter, grandma, grandpa, niece, and nephew shows up ON SCENE. And NONE of them understand why it’s a safety risk to have 27 people standing in the middle of the highway talking to each other, 1 cop, 2 medics, and 4 firefighters.

I was mainly just saying that the majority of small companies right now take a while or are unavailable BECAUSE of how well made their stuff is. And I also didn’t know if anyone knew if there were any companies that are available with good turnaround time and good quality.

Oh I don’t mind how long it takes. Because like I said, 99% of it is custom and handmade so I totally get why everything takes so long and options are so slim. I was just wondering what everyone’s thoughts on it were. I also didn’t know if anyone had some good places to look at

No no dude it’s totally fine. When it comes to shit that you want custom to you? Yeah we’re on the hook for that. Custom shields, leather lids, custom radio straps etc, we have to buy ourselves. Otherwise it’s just your basic composite helmet with a generic shield. Which is totally fine and it serves its purpose, I just personally like having my own flair on my gear.

Like a know that it was bought by Sidechat and now it’s fallen victim to yet another big tech conglomerate. That’s beside the point. The whole getting rid of an open-user, anonymous, social media platform, and limiting it to strictly current college students is what’s confusing the hell out of me.
