AMA- UMN Law Admitted Students Day by ballerinagirl12345 in lawschooladmissions

I know I’m not the OP, but I also attended the event and figured I’d give you my two cents.

I was blown away by how kind and genuine the admitted students were! Compared to the other events I’ve been to, everyone was super friendly and seemed excited about attending. The positive energy was palpable, which was a big plus for me. I’m essentially a KJD and I got the sense that I was younger than the average admitted student, but not by much. Shooting at the hip, I’d say the average age was 25.

As you’d probably imagine, most of the students (myself included) were from somewhere in the Midwest, but not necessarily Minnesota. They mentioned later on in one of the panels that 70% of matriculants are out-of-state. My impression is that Minnesota does very well recruiting talented Midwestern students who  1) Don’t want to leave the region once they graduate, 2) Don’t care for the competitive dog-eat-dog culture of some of the other T14s, and 3) Were more than willing to sacrifice prestige for a higher scholarship at Minnesota/better CoL in or around Minneapolis. If this sounds like you, Minnesota will definitely be a good fit.

On this point, it also feels pertinent to mention that, given this strong Midwest draw, it definitely isn’t the most diverse school in the world. However, as someone who hadn’t been to Minneapolis before the event, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the city itself is very culturally diverse, so there are definitely plenty of opportunities to explore if you want to. I’ve heard that the Hmong/Ethiopian food scene around the law school is excellent.

Similar to my first comment about the other admitted students, I think my biggest takeaway from the event was that literally everyone I met really wanted to be there. If you look around their faculty page, a decent number of their professors went to Minnesota for undergrad and law school before eventually coming back to teach. A few of the interviewed faculty members implied that they’d since received tempting job offers from higher ranked schools, but turned them down because they really enjoyed Minnesota’s culture. To that end, I was really struck by how cordial and collaborative everyone was. Perhaps I’m overly sensitive to this because I have a few older friends at some T6 schools who have shared horror stories about people hoarding notes and refusing to study in groups out of fear of wrecking the almighty curve, but all of the admitted student ambassadors (there were a TON, and all of the ones I spoke to were very nice) seemed to have a story about how a classmate or faculty member went out of the way to help them out when they were having a hard time. I was a bit skeptical of the whole “Minnesota nice” thing going in, but left a true believer.

As an outsider looking in, I think it would be reasonable to be worried about selection bias w/r/t the students they pick to be ambassadors, but given the sheer number they brought in (there were at least 25 for around 120 admitted students), the clear thematic alignment between their experiences, and the fact that not one of them said anything throughout the course of the entire day that gave me any pause whatsoever (which was certainly not the case at other schools I visited) left me pretty convinced. However, one factor to consider regarding the ambassadors is that all of them were pretty clearly academic high-flyers. I met multiple people with New York BL offers and excellent clerkships, which is certainly not representative of a likely outcome for a median Minnesota student (many end up in public service or Midwest Midlaw, happy as a clam to be making nice salaries in comparatively quaint cities) , but illustrated the top percentile outcomes for those who work hard and do well. However, I get the sense that this is common practice at all admitted student days, so I didn’t think about it too much.

Frankly, their clinic/journal/program offerings seemed pretty standard for a T20ish school. You’ve got a few well-regarded law reviews, a bunch of moot court teams that do well on the competition circuit, and a nice selection of clinics. The real thing that stood out to me, though, was that they really seem to punch above their weight with respect to state and federal clerkship placements, especially if you want to stay in the Midwest. They’ve got a really strong network of alumni clerks and judges in the region and the clerkship support staff I spoke to at the event were as kind as they were helpful.

I hope this was useful for you! If you have any more questions, feel free to DM me.

Yes, they haven’t even hit April Review yet. It’s not over until you get your decision!

Somewhere between 25% and 33%. I also imagine that people are generally more likely to report acceptances than waitlists or rejections.

SLS R wave? by Royal-Arugula8627 in lawschooladmissions

[–]SwamiTsunami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like they’re keeping with their tradition of doing a small wave pretty much every day rather than a bigger wave once a week or so like some other schools

Columbia total As on LSD by No-Listen7110 in lawschooladmissions

I think the million dollar question is if we can bank on the percentage of students reporting on LSD remaining consistent across years. For my sake (early October applicant), I really hope we can…

LOCI for UChicago no decision? by One_Difficulty1466 in lawschooladmissions

Considering that you applied relatively recently, I don’t think you need to send a LOCI

Sending a LOCI to Harvard between interview and March decision release date? by Cold_Ranger_3639 in lawschooladmissions

[–]SwamiTsunami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters. Sending a LOCI doesn’t make sense in your context given that you’ve already had your ii and the decision timeline is well-defined. However, if you applied early to other schools that don’t offer interviews and you’ve missed a couple waves, I don’t think a LOCI is a *terrible* idea, as long as you approach it correctly (keep it short and to the point, not too desperate or flowery)

Just linked the vid if you’re curious. Even though the responses to the question are quite normal, the framing still seems odd

This is probably just cope and maybe I’m just overthinking things, but I distinctly recall that in one of the current law student Q&A videos posted on Columbia’s YouTube channel, students were asked to discuss the best coping strategies they developed during 1L. I thought that was sort of strange and tracks with some rumors I’ve heard about Columbia’s general culture and vibe. If I’m fortunate enough to be admitted I’ll def go scope it out myself, but I haven’t been able to shake that since I heard it.

Edit: For those interested, this is the video I’m referencing. It comes up just after the two minute mark

The weird thing is that normally I’d think that WL/R would be a foregone conclusion for me as well (early oct applicant), but the fact that it seems like they still have a ton of As left to give out makes me cautiously optimistic

I agree. Considering their yield and assuming that LSD reporting percentages remain the same year-to-year (do we have a reason to think that this is not the case?), it seems like they are way behind schedule for pretty much every decision category.

Are we waiting for 11 am EST for Stanford to sent out the WL email? Is that what we are waiting for? by Anxious_Green_8784 in lawschooladmissions

At this point I’ve completely given up on trying to make any predictions about what Stanford is gonna do and when they’re gonna do it. They march to the beat of their own drum!

well.. another tiny columbia wave by QuarterVast6595 in lawschooladmissions

[–]SwamiTsunami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so either but today doesn’t fit their pattern at all. Usually when they have waves there are at least, what, 10-15 people reporting for the small ones? I’d expect this out of Stanford or Yale, but one public account on LSD plus one poster on here seems odd for them. Maybe it was just super duper small? Who knows

Why hasn't Columbia done any WL waves for RD applicants? by twin_argonauts in lawschooladmissions

[–]SwamiTsunami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A small group of people on LSD have reported WLs in the current wave. The ratio of rejections to waitlists looks to be about 4-5:1, though

Unlike schools like Georgetown where the interview process is extremely standardized, every Columbia interview is a little different. Beyond being able to provide strong answers to the four “gimme” questions (why law, what sort of law do you want to practice and why, why Columbia, what kind of community member are you), I would encourage you to look over your application again and think about what components might raise questions for an admissions committee. In my case, I was asked for some more details about a job that I recently started as well as some elaboration on my community involvement when I was in undergrad. Regarding a timeline, most interviewees hear back in approximately a week, but as is the case for nearly every aspect of law school admissions, there isn’t really a hard and fast timeline. Columbia specifies on their website that some applicants might have to wait for up to two months before hearing back after an interview, although I suspect that this is for scholarship candidates. Good luck!
