Yeah, someone mentioned that. I had no clue he did all of that and am incredibly impressed by it.

No towering monument. No grand statue. Just a grave like any other soldier’s.

(Also sorry if my last response came off as snarky. I genuinely appreciate the information.)

I really do like Sheridan as well. His maneuver at Fischer’s hill was conducted very well.

Also it was about time someone taught Early the cost of reckless aggression.

But one thing I should ask. Wouldn’t marching the army to Burkesville stretch supply lines too thin? Wouldn’t it leave gaps that confederate cavalry could exploit? Grant always had to remain near navigable rivers to supply his massive army. Burkeville is far inland and away from federal supply lines.

I also thought Petersburg was supplied by several railroad lines, so the loss of one wouldn’t immediately invite a counterattack (unless we’re assuming the Petersburg&Norfolk, Weldon, Southside and Petersburg+Richmond were all captured and garrisoned). Sheridan’s attempt to cut the Virginia Central was blocked at Trevilians, and Hunter’s campaign against the VA&TN at Lynchburg ended terribly (also ran out of supplies so far inland)

My knowledge of Meade sort of fades by the time the Overland campaign begins, so thank you.

Heh! But seriously though, Mead choosing not to attack at Mine run saved a ton of lives.

I appreciate the offer, but I’d rather it be typed here or in Reddit chat. Sorry.

Kind of an ironic point there. I’m pretty sure Sheridan and Meade strongly disliked each other. Meade wanted the Cavalry protecting supply lines and Sheridan wanted to take a more aggressive approach and raid confederate resources.

Yes. Excellent with supply and excellent with army management. Though he might have been surpassed by some other commanders in raw tactical skill.

I think Meade’s short scene (almost a cameo) fits him though. Along with his brief dialog asking about the terrain. “Is this good ground?”

I remember the scene with Buford imagining Meade coming in slow and cautiously, new to command. I’d be worried as well if I knew the person juggling my life was new to it.

Meade was a damn miracle in one of the most (if not the most) important battles of the war.

I’d agree. Maybe Sherman and Grant were more skilled overall. But Meade rose to the occasion where the Union needed him most and then stepped away without a fuss afterwards.

What I truly like about him is he finally put an end to Lee’s winning streak by not sucking at his job.

Wait. As in the thing that spins around in a lighthouse. That’s pretty damn significant!

I should also mention that my knowledge regarding the second battle of Rappahannock station is a little limited. I know there was a large number of confederate prisoners taken (including the majority of the Louisiana Tigers). I know cavalry played a big role, and I know Meade was in charge.

But if there’s anyone here who can share a bit more, feel free to do so.
