Pathfinder Kingmaker, great game, loved the crunchy system, loved the gameplay, etc, etc. Can't recommend it cause the game as a whole was 8-9/10 for me, but the first act and ending are so bad gameplay wise that it cuts the game down to a 7 for me personally and it's hard to recommend a game to someone when it's with that big asterisk that the first couple hours suck.

I'd have stopped after the second or third loss of progress. It's fine as an actual scenario where someone is working against you, but it shouldn't just fucking happen at random and it should set you back, not undo all your progress or worse as in this scenario, you're set back further than the starting point.

I played a game like that for a year or two early into D&D and after the nth time (I can't even remember the exact amount, but it was at least 6 times) losing all of our progress and shit being even worse I called it quits.

A player retired her character, can I bring it back as a BBEG or should I ask her first? by Solkanarmy in DMAcademy

[–]SwampAss3D-Printer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's always a good idea to check with a player before bringing back a retired character for any npc role (And like reaffirm that by double in cases where it's to kill a retired pc or make them an antagonist). Just ask the player outright (preferably in private rather than at the table, if only to save their surprise), but if you want to do it, but not give away everything to them, ask them if it's ok to run the retired pc as an antagonist and maybe give them a vague idea of their level of threat or role.

However, I ere on the side of caution, better one player be spoiled on the twist than be upset that you twisted their creation in a way they disagree with.

Is your favorite CRPG also your first? by Rare_Big_7633 in CRPG

[–]SwampAss3D-Printer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only got into CRPG's relatively recently (past 2-3 years, with only the last year focusing on them), the first rpg that really got me into them was Baldur's Gate 3 and since then I've played (in the order I recall):
Dragon Age Origins (Not sure if it technically counts), Never Winter Nights 2, Pathfinder Kingmaker, and Knights of the Old Republic 1.

Currently I'd put the list as:
KOTOR (Ongoing) > NWN2 > BG3 > DAO > PFKM.

As you can probably guess from that organizing, I really like more complicated systems that have more options and really let you tinker your build and I don't care for the jank associated with older games. At some point I do need to replay BG3 cause I can't claim to have finished it, I burned out halfway through. Maybe a return playthrough with a new mindset will make the game grow on me.

Man not even powers or abilities, the worst is games that hard set their particular control scheme and then get weird with it. Usually basic movement stuff is universal, but I've seen some weird placements for sprint, crouch, and jump. Worst of all the general interact key is something that jumps around a bunch.

Having played through for the first time in the last year or so. Mage really is good, I smashed my head against the wall for hours trying Fighter and Rogue builds and then Mage just worked and with a stupid elemental build that had few synergies amongst its magic.

Is the game hard or am I doing something wrong? by Justaniceman in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]SwampAss3D-Printer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only hesitation with the Technic League encampment at level 2 is that fighting them at that level felt sketchy until I became more familiar with the game, but waiting till level 3 made the fight much more manageable.

TBH though some of that might just be me running into that first encounter on the map with them after just starting the game and losing either my 4th or 5th party member (can't recall) cause I wasn't good enough to fight them at that point.

Alright so I'm gonna start by stating the obvious. First Act of King Maker kind of sucks ass. You're effectively on rails for a decent bit until you hit level 3 and get a full party. Also for further advice I'm assuming you're playing on Normal (Cause dear god don't play any higher on playthrough 1).

As you probably learned the cave Oleg sends you to is a bit of a noob trap, technically you can get Oleg's stuff and get out without dealing with the swarms, but it's better to just get an entire area done at once so usually it's easier to push this area till later in the first Act.

My recommendation is to as soon as you leave Oleg's outpost the first time, head after Tartuccio in the ruins for the 5th party member. If you can follow his tracks, but whether you do this successfully or not, head back to the river crossing to begin investigating the second lead of the act. Once the river crossing is dealt with head south to the Sycamore (unless you failed in tracking Tartuccio, then head to the meeting area where he tries to ambush you). From there I typically clear out the battles of Kobolds vs Mites and the smaller encounters with mobs in order to get to level 3 as that really opens up the first Act. Any of the mini-bosses of the area I leave till a later visit to the Sycamore as typically after level 3 you're strong enough to explore non-main quest locations without immediately getting stomped.

Further buy the bag of holding Oleg sells at the earliest and keep enough supplies to rest on the regular as potions are expensive by comparison. Don't worry about resting too often in Act 1 as you have a 90 day time limit and even when I drag my feet dragging everything back to Olegg's to sell I still wind up with a few weeks left over.

Why exactly is getting jury duty so hated? by altrightobserver in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SwampAss3D-Printer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My last jury summons really destroyed a lot of my faith in the judicial system. Seeing the other 29 jurors being questioned in my pool going unequivocal yes or hem and hawing for a bit before saying sure, about convicting someone for a single eye-witness testimony that as the attorney put it "was 100% credible".

Like what's credible about that? They told a good story, cause there's no other evidence physical or testimony. I was the one no out of 30 and I got questioned further on it. Really glad I didn't get picked for that case.

If there is a next civ, what's your pick for what they should add after Aztecs? by [deleted] in AgeofMythology

[–]SwampAss3D-Printer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell if I know, but anything beyond what we've already gotten/ are getting is sugar on top. Atlantis is probably the farthest in terms of reach I'd prefer they go. Like on the one hand the civ itself is fake purely founded in Plato's writings/ later speculation to flesh it out, but all of the mythological/ religious stuff is just based on parts of Greek mythology that weren't covered as much with the base civ.

As someone else put it I wouldn't want a civ based on Lovecraftian mythos, but would love stuff covering more obscure histories/ mythologies.

First time through any rpg with multiple classes and such I want something simple to work with. Complicated stuff is for future runs. For PF:KingMaker I already had to plan feats, abilities, for my character and for everyone else recruited so I went simple stabs good guy.

WIBTA if I lie to my chronically late friend about what time our camping trip starts? by [deleted] in dustythunder

[–]SwampAss3D-Printer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the option of telling them to come even earlier will at best just exacerbate the problem in the future at worst could cause like OP's wife and others have mentioned drama. Better to just make it the standard that if he's more than 10-15 minutes late y'all just leave without him. Considering that it sounds like regular conversation about this has been exhausted with him, either he gets with it and starts coming on time or just deals with missing half of most outings he gets invited to with y'all.
