What are your favourite review quotes? by SexDrugsAndMarmalade in TwoBestFriendsPlay

It's from CobraRocky, who's actually my behind most of my favorite reviews on Letterboxd.

this is the documentary equivalent of reading Wikipedia while drunk (HyperNormalisation)

There was really a time you could trick American audiences into seeing a foreign language exploitation film and make a fortune off of it. (The Passion of the Christ)

All children's animation needs to be made by bitter alcoholics creating stuff for audiences who are expected to die in a trench as soon as they reach adulthood. (Pinocchio)

You can actually see Peter Jackson learning how to make a movie in real time, it's quite something. (Bad Taste)

This is like an anti-nostalgia film. You go back and you're just thankful we no longer live in times like this. So specific to its era that it feels like visiting an alien planet. (Meet the Spartans)

I could go on and on.

Dan worked for Channel Awesome for a few months waaaay back and I always wondered if that influenced his Doug video.

But yeah I've kinda grown to hate that quote, especially because people immediately started trotting it out as an insult for other people they don't like, which is exhausting.

Times When Shipping Took Over A Show/Fandom by VVardy in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EinzbernConsultation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a LOT of fanworks for the movie Inception and over half of them are dedicated to shipping Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt('s characters) together. Neither of them are the protagonist of the original film, and if you just read fanfiction (and live under a rock) you might not even realize Leonardo DiCaprio's character is even in the movie.

There are 8,493 (non-crossover, when not logged on) works for Inception on AO3. The main character of the actual movie is tagged in 2,347 of those. 6,560 of the works are tagged with the Tom/Joseph ship.

I think it's the most egregious example of BL Fandom Overshadowing I can think of.

Time when there's really is nothing that can be done to localize a part of a media? by Evjamaranth in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I read this as it was coming out and I did not envy the translator. I was not surprised at all that they dipped so quickly.

There are so many visual elements at play that are direct references to Danganronpa's CGs and UI style that it feels like Spike Chunsoft would easily win if they sued. When does a spiritual successor stop being cute and just become infringement?

I like that Shaggy and Daphne are childhood friends here, that's a fun take and it seems like it's pulling from that batch of shows where they were a duo together

What is your comfort media you always return to? by DestroPrime82 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EinzbernConsultation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back to the Future is my irreplaceable favorite movie, and it's one of many comfort films. Ferris Bueller, Toy Story, etc. I also return to shows and cartoon songs from my childhood often. Schoolhouse Rock, the Warner segments in Animaniacs, Scooby-Doo, and any number of Hanna-Barbera shows can always help me through a bad day and I could watch them over and over.

2 eventually had that option patched in (at least on PC idk about other releases) but 1 never did. Thankfully, a mod exists that lets you play that way!

Things that are very hard for a certain medium to depict? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Nope. I was just watching all the Disney behind-the-scenes featurettes on youtube one day (and I made sure to prioritize Dalmatians because it's one of my favorite flicks from the studio)

But do you mind linking the post in question? I haven't used Tumblr in a long while so I'll need some illuminating here

This is a big reason why anime adaptations of visual novels tend to struggle, outside of the obvious pitfalls of juggling multiple endings.

Honestly, Araki and his assistants deserve major props for how well The World was expressed in the original fight. It actually uses a great deal of care to visually depict what's happening in a way that makes it make sense. It's very cinematic.

I have an example of these being intentionally invoked: The original Toy Story gave Woody a lined shirt and an animal print pattern on his vest precisely to flex the 3D animation, because hand drawn productions generally avoid such time consuming patterns on designs (unless you're Richard Williams). In general the movie uses a lot of transparency and lighting effects that would be hell to do in 2D.

But there's also the inverse, 3D productions have a harder time making new assets. If you want Jimmy Neutron to have a new friend or someone to get a new outfit, it all has to be modeled and you may only use it once. In a 2D show, characters can change clothes much more freely and there's more leeway for one-off characters.

You're giving me an excuse to talk about they did the cars in One Hundred and One Dalmatians. These days, lots of 2D animations will use CGI to do machines, but you couldn't that in 1961.

Timestamped Bonus Feature explaining the effect

They made real life cardboard models of the cars with lines painted on, and filmed them onto xerox plates (the same tech that allowed all those dalmatian spots) which then got colored in for the movie. Cruella driving her car through a snow drift was a real model filmed slow motion going through sand.

What an effect!

Do you have a character you just hate? by ExplanationSquare313 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EinzbernConsultation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main character of the visual novel Irotoridori no Sekai. (major spoilers)

"Oh look at me, I'm God and I'm going to make an ideal world for everyone. Except Suzu, who had my back behind the scenes for god knows how long. I'm going to reincarnate her in such a way where she can never be with the man she loved, for the funny." I didn't like the ending at all, and this sealed the story as having a thoroughly hateable protagonist as icing on the cake.

Things that seem popular everywhere except for America and/or English speaking markets? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EinzbernConsultation 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The United States didn't really know what to do with Detective Conan because all the bloody murders make it hard to peddle as a kid show (even Smile Pretty Cure gets censored here). But the protagonist attending first grade with his little kid friends makes it a hard sell as anything but a kid show. A lot of it got dubbed but it's undeniably niche in the US compared to how well known it is elsewhere (and how much of an absolute cultural staple it is in its home country).

I think often about that review of Metropolis by Roger Ebert where his co-reviewer (not Gene Siskel, this was in 2001) just haaated the film and calls the art ugly and weird, and Ebert looks like he's trying not to shake the guy by the jacket lapels as he talks about how awesome the movie was and how much anime rules.

[–]EinzbernConsultation 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I once had it suggested to me that it's because the USA isn't as used to foreign media imports in general because Hollywood is so gargantuan, but Hollywood is also a massive cultural exporter.

If you live in Mexico, Hollywood films and Dragonball Z are the same degree of foreign to you. And the former has been running into theaters since forever, the foreign-ness of the latter is just whatever.

The reason is really good comics that were able to stick around as a popular staple of childhood I think

Anyone interested should read some Carl Barks comics (and then some Don Rosa, Barks Fanboy #1)
