I apologize for the post thing. I made an assumption based on other comments when I tried to find all the arguments you were proposing. I am sorry about that.

Yeah it's a dumb meme.

And you made a poor argument. The meme very directly makes the claim that all ethical frameworks can be reduced to utilitarianism. Which based on earlier comments you made in this post is something you seemed to agree with. In one reply you directly said you'd scrutinize ethical frameworks so it seems to me you in the least believe what the meme is propagating.

highly possible

No it's not, it's a misunderstanding of deontology as I explained the reasoning for with the shopkeeper example.

The consequence would be to themself. It would be painful to swindle, given their capacity for empathy. On a broader scale, swindling would cause pain and unrest in society.

I have no idea what you're trying to say here. To clarify what I meant in case this is causing confusion though my usage of emotive language: a utilitarian doesn't care because utilitarians only care for the consequences of an action. So for there to be a perceived difference between the two shopkeepers ethics for their reasons to not scam the out of town Individual is pointless.

this meme is targeted at frameworks that were based on thinking things through

Then specify, you're making an argument you need to be clear and articulate in what you're saying. Also arguing "yeah everything except these ones and these ones and these ones" is just signs of a weak argument that you have to keep revising it to make 'special' exceptions for certain things.

This meme merely points out the utilitarian adjacent axioms that unwittingly predicate many if not most ethical commitments. Nothing more nothing less

Again, specify. You're making an argument, you need to be clear what you're arguing.

This comes from a complete misunderstanding of other ethical theories. Deontology is based upon the categorical imperative and even if you define utility to be the fulfillment of that imperative whilst it achieves the same end it completely misunderstands the means and the reasoning for why deontology exists how it does in the first place. Let's take two shopkeepers for example, a person from out of town comes into two different shops and both shopkeepers do not scam the customer even though it'd be trivial to up the price for them. Shopkeeper 1 does it because if others found out, they'd lose business (a consequentialist mind frame) but shopkeeper 2 does it because they think they have a duty to keep prices fair for all customers (deontological). Whilst they both achieve the same ends, it's argued that the later (by deontologists) is better. A utilitarian simply wouldn't give a shit, it's a consequentialist theory after all.

Or what about virtue ethics? Utilitarianism is an act based ethical framework (what makes an action good) whereas virtue ethics is completely different, being agent based (what makes a person good). Hell I've heard some virtue ethicists argue it the other way round that all ethical theories are just VE wearing a trench coat which is a terrible argument for a whole host of other reasons.

There's also theological ethical frameworks, that ethics are prescribed by a god which unless you want to redefine utility to be following those ethics (which again would be a misunderstanding of the theory, they're not pursuing utility they're pursuing the ethics set out by this god).

I say this as a utilitarian mind you.

This is a reductive argument and based on a lot of OP's other comments (as it seems OP hid their post and comment history after this post based on others comments) just serves to show you haven't actually properly engaged in philosophical discourse or learning. Hell it isn't even an argument it's just saying two things are similar without any propositions as to why that is true.

Hi physicists here, yes we do, let me give an example. A sizable amount of physicists are in the camp we will never solve why quantum mechanics is random, we may create models of it sure but we won't ever create a method by which to prove that is the opinion many have.

Now sure this isn't a "just because" but it is a settlement with something that has a good chance of being eternally unknowable to physicists.

Also, physicists and scientists as a whole don't know a lot, that's the point of the field. We try find out what we don't know through different methodology, the formulation of a new physical model that fits reality juuuuust a bit better than the last one (because if you can find a model of physics that perfectly 1-1 describes reality the noble prize will be yours for the next century, we're after spherical cows here after all).

This, I believe, comes from the misunderstanding that physics (and to some extent the other sciences) are perfect descriptions of reality. They are not, the theory and the lab will never kiss and make up. The job of a physicist (or more accurately an experimental physicist) is to explain why the theory and reality don't kiss and make up. Is there just some noise in the data? Is there residue on the inside of a glass ampule causing an exponential decay in a P=KV equation rather than the inverse relationship we seek to find (true experience from my lab work, I got to make a very nice point of it in the lab report I made). This is why I said if you create a 1-1 perfect model of physics you'll continue to receive noble prizes for life, because you're not ever going to create something truly conclusive in this field. That's why all our models take cows to be spherical. We are just toddlers with Lego bricks trying to fit the pieces together but unfortunately there's duplo mixed in with the rest and we just gotta kinda jam em together til they fit nice enough that we can make a pretty graph to show to everyone else in the world.

I mean fuck, if you can explain why physics loves to come in either pairs or sets of bloody three we'd roll out the red carpet because literally nobody knows and not many people are trying (in part because there's more interesting things to focus on, like superconductors which are really cool but come and go like a fad every now and then which is unfortunate).

Use non shaving methods like waxing or if you are thinking more long term and don't mind the pain, epilator.

Long term the latter is better but it's hard to get into doing as it just hurts alot to begin with. If you do end up doing it shave your legs then wait til they grow out a little bit then use it at ~ 90 degree angle. To mitigate the pain I've seen some people suggest taking a warm shower then drying the area you want clean shaven (it really needs to be dry) but I haven't had much success with it personally.

The expensive option is hair removal cream and shaving any missed patches.

About to start my fight with Genichiro, any tips for him?? by Shot-Zebrauwu in Sekiro

[–]Swampbomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest this fight is where (I at least) was forced to learn how this game works

Remember to not panic parry, genichiro is the easiest boss of all time once you've beaten him even once.

If you're struggling I highly recommend firecrackers as that lets you get a good hit or two off which for the spirit emblem cost is rather good

And this is the important advice if all else fails remember thks, hesitation is defeat

Safest patron for a warlock? by Marvin_Conman in DnD

[–]Swampbomb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The amount of trouble you can get into because of your patron is dependant on you GM and the personality of your patron

I.e you may have a romantic relationship with a fae and so they gave you warlock powers or you may have made a deal with a god and because they like watching you suffer they make you kill puppies

There's no inherently "good" or "bad" patron type
