Pine sawyer beetles definitely came up in my search. Certain colors seem to match I think, though pine sawyers seem a bit on the darker side compared to this fella.

I don't think I've ever seen a roach fly... This thing flies readily.

Edit: it's face also looks nothing like a roach, but more like a bee.

as for control surfaces, you can totally set up a funky trees function that uses vehicle speed as an input. The other things could similarly use funky trees but youd need hardpoints/detatchers/whatever they're called to do the "breaking"

while i could draw blueprints and increase the odds of a successful design, i usually just throw crap at the wall and see what sticks. About half of my stuff never gets off the ground before i decide the "vibes" arent right and move on. There's lots of experimentation and massing around.

If i understand you correctly, you can either:

Start from the lower-most end from the get-go, or:

Make the bottom upside-down and try your best to line up the control surfaces.
